Just slow down and there won't be any hurriance.

So... like... real talk... should we be trying to find a reason to get the f outta Brooklyn this weekend or no?

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

Only if you're concerned about spending 1-2 days inside while it rains outside? Is it really going to be any more serious than that? Haven't read up on the whole news/fear-mongering campaign yet.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

I'll be fine as long as the power is on.

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

I'm happy to spend up to 7 days inside while it rains! Just wonder if I'm underestimating things. Apparently my block is in a C-Zone on the NYC hurricane evacuation scale, whatever the hell that means. West Side Highway is a Zone A so I guess C is not too bad...

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

Oh hmm I see, that's mostly about storm surge flooding. I live like 5 miles inland so I am in no zone at all. I would def recommend getting things out of your basement, I guess? Or raising them up. I feel like basements could flood, because that is what basements do.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

laurel i'm not sure you know what "fear-mongering" means

anyway yeah from the looks of things it seems like NYC is gonna get hit with irene as a cat 1 - some pretty legit flooding, widespread loss of power, not sure what kind of wind damage would occur in a city liket that. my apartment in connecticut is surrounded by trees so i may go into campus for a couple days if that's what they recommend

karen d. foreskin (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:45 (twelve years ago) link

Cat 1 is the tamest out of 5 right?

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

yes, put an extra case of beer in the fridge just to be safe.

Kerm, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

yeah

1 bottle Stoli Vanil

incredibly middlebrow (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

they're saying there's like a 30% chance this could reach category 5 which is nuts but it won't be that strong when it gets to new england. cat 5 is like, devastates everything in its path

frogsb (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

if californians got to make fun of nyers and washingtonians for freaking out over a 2 second earthquake, do floridians get to make fun of the same ppl for freaking out over this hurricane?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

btw if you live further north than DC i wouldn't worry about this thing, by the time it reaches ny it should prob be just a very bad thunderstorm

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe I'm not taking this storm thing seriously enough? But I'm assuming p much it will be windy and rainy. Your basement might flood (or your apartment, if it's in a basement). Other than these things, don't plan any picnics or bike rides? I don't get any tv reception or watch news so I'm just assuming they're talking about how Tropical Storm Irene could flatten lower Manhattan or whatever.

xxxp

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

hurricanes are pretty unpredictable and they're pretty easy to prepare for

also the higher up you are, the safer you & your things are, so if you live an apt don't freak out

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

also don't park your car near any trees

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

obv. don't "freak out," but this is a serious hurricane.

i'm saying this as a floridian whose seen hurricane katrina and wilma (both of which passed through/very near coral gables, where we live) and andrew (when i lived on kendall and 142nd; not the worst-hit area, obv., but an area hit very badly).

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

Well I mean if tree branches start coming through the glass windows, there's gonna be some clean-up, obviously. But we don't have storm shutters and like everyone else, I live in a rental, so I only have what my LL provided us with.

Also I'm scheduled to perform outdoors all day Saturday for a highland games on Long Island that's supposed to be held in a semi-wooded park. Would be willing to take bets on whether this goes ahead.

arch midwestern housewife named (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

lol sarge come on...if this hits nyc as a category 2 it's gonna be a pretty big fuckin deal

frogsb (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

if californians got to make fun of nyers and washingtonians for freaking out over a 2 second earthquake, do floridians get to make fun of the same ppl for freaking out over this hurricane?

floridians don't get to make fun of anyone for anything iirc

iatee, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

if you have a car and can leave it in a parking garage over the weekend, i'd make plans to do that

also if you don't have shutters you could, like, put masking tape across your windows -- or if you can get any access to plywood, that works

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

iatee, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

there's like a 1% chance that a tree or heavy tree branch falls on your car

this would have to be like cat 4 for something to fall into your apartment and do any damage

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

Supposedly it's not an apples-to-apples thing w/r/t how much a category (n) will do in NYC. According to the gov't:

Due to regional geography, hurricanes in New York City — though infrequent — can do more damage than hurricanes of similar strength in the southern United States.

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:24 (twelve years ago) link

trailer parks and barely bothering to rebuild is a hedge against more frequent storms down here

2004-2006 we lost a few days of class on this, the first week of school, thanks to goddamn hurricanes. They're ok as long as you don't lose power.

I kinda get eyerolly at Floridian friends of mine who have lived here for decades, see a massive hurricane that is ten days away from any landfall and currently not projected to impact us, and immediately start yelling OMG BUCKLE UP FLORIDIANS, WE'RE FUCKED. And yet...Lee is here and friends of mine are already msging me, bugging out

Like when a hurricane actually arrives here, you'll be stressed enough, which I know from experience. Why do you want to feel that same terror prior, no good horror films in theaters?
