It's funny that the rape scene in ROTN has been brought up, but 16 Candles has one too -- Jake Ryan passes off his drunk girlfriend to Anthony Michael Hall to have his way with.

I am horrified by how much I liked this movie when I was younger, because there is so much wrong with it.

Yeah its strange to watch those and think "wow, you probably couldn't pass that off in a movie today" but there are some shows like Family Guy and 2 Broke Girls that are arguably even worse

I tried to watch 2 Broke Girls last night; I made it 5 minutes

I ended up changing the channel to a Family Guy marathon

the ROTN situation was rape, but not in the violent attacking manner normally associated with the word; dude deceived her into thinking he was her (much larger) boyfriend and revealed himself afterward and she was like "zomg it's you! you are awesome at sex, let's date"

oh way xp upthread about the precinct 13 thing, yeah, it's been a long time since i've seen it (i had the same thought then, too though) so i only remembered "inner city", but imo this doesn't actually free it from racist connotation -- "inner city" codes as black and the fear of one may as well be a fear of the other in a modern context (not sure if the 70s was that much different tho). it is possible to have a black protagonist and white bad guys and still perpetuate stereotypes that go along with/parallel racist paranoia.

I think I remember that's how it went down. The thing that gets me is Jake basically said "Lol have fun doing whatever you want to my passed out girlfriend!" which in the movie was supposed to be okay because she was a bitch.

well yeah the setup itself is insanely mysognystic. but it's okay cuz Jake is so DREAMY

Yeah, he totally did which is completely fucked up but something I never really noticed the 3000 times I watched this when I was younger. Messed up.

TBF Michael Schoeffling was incredibly handsome.

Which is, of course, not to say it was OK just that it's a shame that he only ever made like 3 movies.

I watched stupid Vision Quest just for him and the Madonna song, I didn't really notice the fucked up things his character did in 16 candles until much later. xp

I just saw that on IMDB! I watched Vision Quest for Matthew Modine (<3 <3) and the awesome training montages. I don't even remember MS being in it!

But MS is definitely the reason I have seen Mermaids more than any one person ever should although I think maybe Mermaids was actually an OK movie? Again that's another that I haven't seen in at least 10 years so I could be wrong.
