I was going to say that the Asian stereotype in ROTN wasn't nearly as bad as Sixteen Candles and then I remembered "Hair pie?" so uh never mind

lol I thought Dayo was still talking about 40 Days 40 Nights. It was very confusing.

"uh they make it pretty clear that he's from China xp"
there's an interview with gedde where he explains the donger's accent is korean.
also, ferris bueller and breakfast club feel more racist than sixteen candles, in tone anyway.

gedde was almost 30 yrs old when sixteen candles was released~

Breakfast Club is probably the least racist of Hughes' peak period work imho

evidently the name is based on nature?
Some ducks grow phalluses as long as their entire body. In the fall, the genitalia will disappear, only to reappear next spring.

It's funny that the rape scene in ROTN has been brought up, but 16 Candles has one too -- Jake Ryan passes off his drunk girlfriend to Anthony Michael Hall to have his way with.
I am horrified by how much I liked this movie when I was younger, because there is so much wrong with it.
― Nicole, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link
Hall does not actually rape her tho iirc
― locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah its strange to watch those and think "wow, you probably couldn't pass that off in a movie today" but there are some shows like Family Guy and 2 Broke Girls that are arguably even worse
― frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link
I tried to watch 2 Broke Girls last night; I made it 5 minutes
I ended up changing the channel to a Family Guy marathon

x-posts - Well, they sleep together and she has no memory of it (whereas I'm p sure he was supposedly sober) so going by most definitions that would definitely count although I never really thought of it as such but I haven't seen this is a very long time either.
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link
while ROTN implies that it's okay to rape someone as long as you're good at it
― frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:13 (twelve years ago) link
how can one be good at rape?

well, truthfully I don't think the writers or producers thought it as rape, I mean she willingly did it with the guy in the gorilla suit, whoever that guy may be

entirely possible I'm forgetting something, mostly I just remember Hall trying to get her in the car etc

the ROTN situation was rape, but not in the violent attacking manner normally associated with the word; dude deceived her into thinking he was her (much larger) boyfriend and revealed himself afterward and she was like "zomg it's you! you are awesome at sex, let's date"
― Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:19 (twelve years ago) link
yeah I never understood that scene, either she's one of the least perceptive people in the history of the world or she knew all along, that tramp
― frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link
oh way xp upthread about the precinct 13 thing, yeah, it's been a long time since i've seen it (i had the same thought then, too though) so i only remembered "inner city", but imo this doesn't actually free it from racist connotation -- "inner city" codes as black and the fear of one may as well be a fear of the other in a modern context (not sure if the 70s was that much different tho). it is possible to have a black protagonist and white bad guys and still perpetuate stereotypes that go along with/parallel racist paranoia.

Yeah, you are but I think I was too because iirc in the morning he asks her if they did it so maybe he was drunk too? Anyway she says she thinks so and then he asks if he was any good to which she responds the same. I think.
― ☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link
They have sex, but she had by that point gotten him drunk too, so he doesn't remember it. (Irony!) He asks her something like "Was I good?" and she says "I think so."

i hated those scenes, completely ruined the movie - "oh no, he's only a virgin due to a series of untimely comic mishaps"
― frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link
you're also allowed to dislike it because of the whole rape thing fyi
― Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:31 (twelve years ago) link
I think I remember that's how it went down. The thing that gets me is Jake basically said "Lol have fun doing whatever you want to my passed out girlfriend!" which in the movie was supposed to be okay because she was a bitch.
― Nicole, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:33 (twelve years ago) link
well yeah the setup itself is insanely mysognystic. but it's okay cuz Jake is so DREAMY

I just saw that on IMDB! I watched Vision Quest for Matthew Modine (<3 <3) and the awesome training montages. I don't even remember MS being in it!

But MS is definitely the reason I have seen Mermaids more than any one person ever should although I think maybe Mermaids was actually an OK movie? Again that's another that I haven't seen in at least 10 years so I could be wrong.
