yeah I never understood that scene, either she's one of the least perceptive people in the history of the world or she knew all along, that tramp

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

oh way xp upthread about the precinct 13 thing, yeah, it's been a long time since i've seen it (i had the same thought then, too though) so i only remembered "inner city", but imo this doesn't actually free it from racist connotation -- "inner city" codes as black and the fear of one may as well be a fear of the other in a modern context (not sure if the 70s was that much different tho). it is possible to have a black protagonist and white bad guys and still perpetuate stereotypes that go along with/parallel racist paranoia.

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:21 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah its strange to watch those and think "wow, you probably couldn't pass that off in a movie today" but there are some shows like Family Guy and 2 Broke Girls that are arguably even worse

entirely possible I'm forgetting something, mostly I just remember Hall trying to get her in the car etc

Yeah, you are but I think I was too because iirc in the morning he asks her if they did it so maybe he was drunk too? Anyway she says she thinks so and then he asks if he was any good to which she responds the same. I think.

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

Well, they sleep together and she has no memory of it (whereas I'm p sure he was supposedly sober) so going by most definitions that would definitely count although I never really thought of it as such but I haven't seen this is a very long time either.

They have sex, but she had by that point gotten him drunk too, so he doesn't remember it. (Irony!) He asks her something like "Was I good?" and she says "I think so."

i hated those scenes, completely ruined the movie - "oh no, he's only a virgin due to a series of untimely comic mishaps"

you're also allowed to dislike it because of the whole rape thing fyi

I think I remember that's how it went down. The thing that gets me is Jake basically said "Lol have fun doing whatever you want to my passed out girlfriend!" which in the movie was supposed to be okay because she was a bitch.

Nicole, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

well yeah the setup itself is insanely mysognystic. but it's okay cuz Jake is so DREAMY

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, he totally did which is completely fucked up but something I never really noticed the 3000 times I watched this when I was younger. Messed up.

TBF Michael Schoeffling was incredibly handsome.

Which is, of course, not to say it was OK just that it's a shame that he only ever made like 3 movies.

I watched stupid Vision Quest just for him and the Madonna song, I didn't really notice the fucked up things his character did in 16 candles until much later. xp

Nicole, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:38 (twelve years ago) link

does Wang even get any lines in Caddyshack?

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

x-post -

I just saw that on IMDB! I watched Vision Quest for Matthew Modine (<3 <3) and the awesome training montages. I don't even remember MS being in it!

☆★☆彡彡 (ENBB), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 20:40 (twelve years ago) link

But MS is definitely the reason I have seen Mermaids more than any one person ever should although I think maybe Mermaids was actually an OK movie? Again that's another that I haven't seen in at least 10 years so I could be wrong.

I remember loving Mermaids, but I haven't seen it since it came out and don't even really remember the plot?

Guys do we really want to encourage frogbs to expound more on the relative "correctness" or rape scens in movies?

p sure its implied that he knows no english. he makes up for it w/ toothy grins & the perpetual auto-shutter of his Nikon.

x-post - Basically Winona Ryder loves him and lusts after him the whole movie until finally they do it in a bell tower while her sister (a very young C. Ricci) nearly drowns and then Cher calls her a whore but then they all dance around the kitchen to a good song and I think it works out OK. Or something like that.

can someone remind me what the rape scene in 40 Year Old Virgin was, or at least admit that they got two separate movies mixed up

Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

no rape scene, but the whole thing about trying to find a girl drunk enough to fuck and then driving home with drunk leslie mann with intent to fuck is as rapey as it gets

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

i couldn't adjust the food knobs (Phil D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure I can think of some rapier scenarios

also the suggestion that Carrell's character would have even gone through with it is a bit suspect imho

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:16 (twelve years ago) link

if we wanna talk rapey/mysogyny movies featuring Jack Nicholson, look no further than Art Garfunkel's star turn opposite him in Carnal Knowledge

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:16 (twelve years ago) link

rapier wit

buzza, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

how is "targeting mega-drunk girls for sex" not mega-date rape

and the movie portrays it like normal acceptable male behavior which is only deterred because of a comical amount of vomit. even if carrell's character wouldn't have gone through with it (which i believe) it still normalizes date rape through the other three characters that were pushing him to do it. i can believe that apatow and co were following the status quo of not knowing that date rape doesn't always involve roofies, but that doesn't make it any better

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

Flower Drum Song was praised for being super progressive in the 60's (mainly because of an almost all Asian cast) but it feels so awkward and weird watching it now

zachylon you are a) criticizing a movie for an event which does not happen and b) totally ignoring the fact that the movie makes the three other men pushing the "tackle drunk bitches" angle look like fools, liars, and fuckups

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:52 (twelve years ago) link

simply because a movie depicts a date-rape scenario /= endorsement of date rape

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

every single one of those three other guys gets a scene where they confess they are afraid of women, inexperienced with them, psychotic in their relationships with them, etc.

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

whereas 40 Days and 40 Nights implies that it's kind of the guy's fault if he gets raped

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

i am criticizing it for an event which DOES happen, which is "treat targeting drunk girls at bars as acceptable behavior"

at no point in the film, that i can remember anyway, does anyone actually mention that that goal in itself is fucked up

this is the same argument people were using to defend observe and report: seth rogen's character is a big doofus, therefore the rape scene = funny and insightful. ALL male apatow characters are ridiculous manchildren, that does not mean his films are exempt from this line of criticism

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

at no point in the film, that i can remember anyway, does anyone actually mention that that goal in itself is fucked up

uh the MAIN CHARACTER

seriously do you even watch movies

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

Observe and Report is a good movie, Rogen's character is way beyond doofus (he's a fucking psycho!) and I can't believe anyone thinks a movie depicting something = an endorsement of said action in this day and age

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

you're talking about these characters as if the majority of audiences watching them left the theater thinking "man, what sad, unfortunate cases!" rather than "FUNNY GUYS ARE SO FUNNY WISH MY FRIENDS WERE LIKE THEM"

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

man frogbs, let me guess, you were the kid in high school that would always be like, "but what about if a woman rapes a man??!? it can happen!"
