yeah tbh when you kind of chastised me for not calling that out I assumed I had missed a big chunk of the movie

xp isn't that that Jack Nicholson/Helen Hunt joint?

i couldn't adjust the food knobs (Phil D.), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure I can think of some rapier scenarios

also the suggestion that Carrell's character would have even gone through with it is a bit suspect imho

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:16 (twelve years ago) link

if we wanna talk rapey/mysogyny movies featuring Jack Nicholson, look no further than Art Garfunkel's star turn opposite him in Carnal Knowledge

rapier wit

buzza, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

how is "targeting mega-drunk girls for sex" not mega-date rape

and the movie portrays it like normal acceptable male behavior which is only deterred because of a comical amount of vomit. even if carrell's character wouldn't have gone through with it (which i believe) it still normalizes date rape through the other three characters that were pushing him to do it. i can believe that apatow and co were following the status quo of not knowing that date rape doesn't always involve roofies, but that doesn't make it any better

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:20 (twelve years ago) link

Flower Drum Song was praised for being super progressive in the 60's (mainly because of an almost all Asian cast) but it feels so awkward and weird watching it now

⚓ (gr8080), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

zachylon you are a) criticizing a movie for an event which does not happen and b) totally ignoring the fact that the movie makes the three other men pushing the "tackle drunk bitches" angle look like fools, liars, and fuckups

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:52 (twelve years ago) link

simply because a movie depicts a date-rape scenario /= endorsement of date rape

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

every single one of those three other guys gets a scene where they confess they are afraid of women, inexperienced with them, psychotic in their relationships with them, etc.

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

whereas 40 Days and 40 Nights implies that it's kind of the guy's fault if he gets raped

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

i am criticizing it for an event which DOES happen, which is "treat targeting drunk girls at bars as acceptable behavior"

at no point in the film, that i can remember anyway, does anyone actually mention that that goal in itself is fucked up

this is the same argument people were using to defend observe and report: seth rogen's character is a big doofus, therefore the rape scene = funny and insightful. ALL male apatow characters are ridiculous manchildren, that does not mean his films are exempt from this line of criticism

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:00 (twelve years ago) link

uh the MAIN CHARACTER

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

seriously do you even watch movies

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:02 (twelve years ago) link

Observe and Report is a good movie, Rogen's character is way beyond doofus (he's a fucking psycho!) and I can't believe anyone thinks a movie depicting something = an endorsement of said action in this day and age

locally sourced stabbage (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

you're talking about these characters as if the majority of audiences watching them left the theater thinking "man, what sad, unfortunate cases!" rather than "FUNNY GUYS ARE SO FUNNY WISH MY FRIENDS WERE LIKE THEM"

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

man frogbs, let me guess, you were the kid in high school that would always be like, "but what about if a woman rapes a man??!? it can happen!"

when does carrell say it's fucked up? did i forget? or are you just referring to the fact that he got puked on instead? i don't think we were supposed to read that as him suddenly having a moral change of heart. it was "i got puked on and i don't want to have sex anymore."

jon, i enjoyed 40 yo virgin and found the characters funny, but it is possible to do that and also accept that it had a fucked up scene

man frogbs, let me guess, you were the kid in high school that would always be like, "but what about if a woman rapes a man??!? it can happen!"

Uhhh, where am I implying this? I'm saying the same thing that I say in other threads, that if the roles were reversed and the result winds up being something totally fucked up, then the idea is probably not a good one in the first place

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

Observe and report was not actually that good. I have never seen 40 yo v in it's entirety but - wait - is this covo really still happening?

What did you guys think about the woman-on-man rape in Get Him to the Greek, not to mention the anal violation by Russell Brand's character? (Hill's character's friends actually laugh when he tells them "I was just raped".)

Also 16 Candles is all kinds of fucked up. Before the jock passes off his gf to AMH's character, doesn't he actually say something like "--- is upstairs passed out right now. I could have my way with her six different ways if I wanted."

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

its one thing if they're passing it off as a joke (it's a comedy after all), but when it's actually a major plot point it kind of begs you to take it seriously which is why that one stood out so much to me

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

frogbs, I was just zinging you because you kept bringing up this scene in that shitty Josh Hartnett movie when we'd all moved on to talking about Steve Carrell

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

ultimate moral of the story in 40yov is that steve carrell's friends were all idiots with regards to women+sex and that he really shouldn't have been listening them ever (even if it worked out in the end), right?

re the borat/hangover as perceived in twenty years time thing - i can't remember sixteen candles, is the tone of it such that this character is supposed to be an offensive caricature (cf borat and the senor chang in the hangover) or does he just happen to be one?

sunn :o))) (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

to be honest I wouldn't even look that deeply into 40yov, pretty much all of Apatow's movies go completely off the rails just to fit in a few more jokes, there's not really a consistent message anywhere

doesn't apatow have a pretty consistent disney princess-marrying-prince fantasy for manchildren message?

I think the dinner scene in 16, linked above, is as much about the embarassing parents as it is fresh-off-the-boat jokes.

well yeah and the idea of the uncle only hosting the dude for free labor - still doesn't make the actual character any more acceptable though.

its basically an entire cast of long duk dongs but instead of being funny you're supposed to marvel at how normal they are and how they have hopes and dreams and trials and tribulations just like white ppl

my dad tells Chinese laundry/Japanese pilot/etc jokes, the same ones, every time I see him. his grandson, my son, is Asian, but next time I see dad I will still get to hear plenty of vintage WWII jokes about those goofy Asians, I'm quite sure. just in case you were wondering "why's underrated a so fucked up?" there is another piece of the puzzle for yall
