man frogbs, let me guess, you were the kid in high school that would always be like, "but what about if a woman rapes a man??!? it can happen!"

what if I left thinking, "FUNNY GUYS ARE SO FUNNY, thank god they are fictional characters because I would hate to know them irl"?

when does carrell say it's fucked up? did i forget? or are you just referring to the fact that he got puked on instead? i don't think we were supposed to read that as him suddenly having a moral change of heart. it was "i got puked on and i don't want to have sex anymore."

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

are you serious

jon, i enjoyed 40 yo virgin and found the characters funny, but it is possible to do that and also accept that it had a fucked up scene

Bruce K. Tedesco (zachlyon), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

really did not expect this to be so controversial, i'm just going to stop posting about things forever because jesus

Uhhh, where am I implying this? I'm saying the same thing that I say in other threads, that if the roles were reversed and the result winds up being something totally fucked up, then the idea is probably not a good one in the first place

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

Observe and report was not actually that good. I have never seen 40 yo v in it's entirety but - wait - is this covo really still happening?

What did you guys think about the woman-on-man rape in Get Him to the Greek, not to mention the anal violation by Russell Brand's character? (Hill's character's friends actually laugh when he tells them "I was just raped".)

Also 16 Candles is all kinds of fucked up. Before the jock passes off his gf to AMH's character, doesn't he actually say something like "--- is upstairs passed out right now. I could have my way with her six different ways if I wanted."

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, yeah, I guess we deviated from the original point. I hated Borat too?

its one thing if they're passing it off as a joke (it's a comedy after all), but when it's actually a major plot point it kind of begs you to take it seriously which is why that one stood out so much to me

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

frogbs, I was just zinging you because you kept bringing up this scene in that shitty Josh Hartnett movie when we'd all moved on to talking about Steve Carrell

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

ultimate moral of the story in 40yov is that steve carrell's friends were all idiots with regards to women+sex and that he really shouldn't have been listening them ever (even if it worked out in the end), right?

re the borat/hangover as perceived in twenty years time thing - i can't remember sixteen candles, is the tone of it such that this character is supposed to be an offensive caricature (cf borat and the senor chang in the hangover) or does he just happen to be one?

sunn :o))) (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

to be honest I wouldn't even look that deeply into 40yov, pretty much all of Apatow's movies go completely off the rails just to fit in a few more jokes, there's not really a consistent message anywhere

Yes

doesn't apatow have a pretty consistent disney princess-marrying-prince fantasy for manchildren message?
hughes is more this weird suburban nostalgia that gets more reaganesque on each iteration.

I think the dinner scene in 16, linked above, is as much about the embarassing parents as it is fresh-off-the-boat jokes.

well yeah and the idea of the uncle only hosting the dude for free labor - still doesn't make the actual character any more acceptable though.

ffs he's using inverted silverware as chopsticks, haha, very funny.

its basically an entire cast of long duk dongs but instead of being funny you're supposed to marvel at how normal they are and how they have hopes and dreams and trials and tribulations just like white ppl

couldn't have been more cringeworthy than joy luck club starring andrew mccarthy.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link

There should be a "worst Andrew McCarthy movie" poll, bc they're all pretty bad.

my dad tells Chinese laundry/Japanese pilot/etc jokes, the same ones, every time I see him. his grandson, my son, is Asian, but next time I see dad I will still get to hear plenty of vintage WWII jokes about those goofy Asians, I'm quite sure. just in case you were wondering "why's underrated a so fucked up?" there is another piece of the puzzle for yall

I feel like that scene is a pretty good summation of everything wrong with 'comedy' movies in the '80s.

before reading the thread: saw this movie for the first and only time about six years ago, and was absolutely gobsmacked at how gross and racist the character was, to the point that I can't remember anything else at all about it. except maybe someone wakes up in a car outside a house party somewhere near the end? anyway, racist and not funny, if you didn't infer that already.

having read the thread I vaguely remember being grossed out by rapiness too, was that the car thing I was thinking of? anyway, horrible horrible movie and any country that gets up in arms about b&w archival editions of Tintin Au Congo with contextualising introductions but allowed this on video shelves should be cast out of the EU IMO

some of the Chow stuff in Hangover made me a bit squeamish, but Leong is a great clown so

How does a movie like The Party fit into this issue, it occurs to me? I mean I love that film, but I did always wonder about Seller's character in it.

Trayce, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 02:32 (twelve years ago) link

anybody catch that Last Comic Standing from a few years ago (the year Iliza Schlesinger won) in the preliminaries, where that one dude did 'sketch comedy' where he pretended to be a Japanese fighter pilot getting taken down by an American?

that was like the worst thingin the history of man

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:58 (twelve years ago) link

The Party is another one where I saw it as a grown-up after everyone in the world had been going "lol this movie is a classic everyone can enjoy over and over again" for years and my reaction was "wtf this shit is disgusting"
