its one thing if they're passing it off as a joke (it's a comedy after all), but when it's actually a major plot point it kind of begs you to take it seriously which is why that one stood out so much to me

to be honest I wouldn't even look that deeply into 40yov, pretty much all of Apatow's movies go completely off the rails just to fit in a few more jokes, there's not really a consistent message anywhere

I feel like that scene is a pretty good summation of everything wrong with 'comedy' movies in the '80s.

before reading the thread: saw this movie for the first and only time about six years ago, and was absolutely gobsmacked at how gross and racist the character was, to the point that I can't remember anything else at all about it. except maybe someone wakes up in a car outside a house party somewhere near the end? anyway, racist and not funny, if you didn't infer that already.

The Party is another one where I saw it as a grown-up after everyone in the world had been going "lol this movie is a classic everyone can enjoy over and over again" for years and my reaction was "wtf this shit is disgusting"
