frogbs, I was just zinging you because you kept bringing up this scene in that shitty Josh Hartnett movie when we'd all moved on to talking about Steve Carrell
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago) link
ultimate moral of the story in 40yov is that steve carrell's friends were all idiots with regards to women+sex and that he really shouldn't have been listening them ever (even if it worked out in the end), right?
re the borat/hangover as perceived in twenty years time thing - i can't remember sixteen candles, is the tone of it such that this character is supposed to be an offensive caricature (cf borat and the senor chang in the hangover) or does he just happen to be one?
― sunn :o))) (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link
to be honest I wouldn't even look that deeply into 40yov, pretty much all of Apatow's movies go completely off the rails just to fit in a few more jokes, there's not really a consistent message anywhere

Yes
― Bam! Orgasm explosion in your facehole. (DJP), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:51 (twelve years ago) link
doesn't apatow have a pretty consistent disney princess-marrying-prince fantasy for manchildren message?hughes is more this weird suburban nostalgia that gets more reaganesque on each iteration.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 22:59 (twelve years ago) link
I think the dinner scene in 16, linked above, is as much about the embarassing parents as it is fresh-off-the-boat jokes.
― 40 yoevoo (Eazy), Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:00 (twelve years ago) link
Also 16 Candles is all kinds of fucked up. Before the jock passes off his gf to AMH's character, doesn't he actually say something like "--- is upstairs passed out right now. I could have my way with her six different ways if I wanted."

well yeah and the idea of the uncle only hosting the dude for free labor - still doesn't make the actual character any more acceptable though.

ffs he's using inverted silverware as chopsticks, haha, very funny.
a movie is either well made or badly made, etc etc

the uncle gets his comeuppance when the donger destroys his automobile.compare with japanese howard cosell in better off dead, who loses to hero john cusack.

its basically an entire cast of long duk dongs but instead of being funny you're supposed to marvel at how normal they are and how they have hopes and dreams and trials and tribulations just like white ppl

couldn't have been more cringeworthy than joy luck club starring andrew mccarthy.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 23:31 (twelve years ago) link
There should be a "worst Andrew McCarthy movie" poll, bc they're all pretty bad.

my dad tells Chinese laundry/Japanese pilot/etc jokes, the same ones, every time I see him. his grandson, my son, is Asian, but next time I see dad I will still get to hear plenty of vintage WWII jokes about those goofy Asians, I'm quite sure. just in case you were wondering "why's underrated a so fucked up?" there is another piece of the puzzle for yall

I feel like that scene is a pretty good summation of everything wrong with 'comedy' movies in the '80s.

before reading the thread: saw this movie for the first and only time about six years ago, and was absolutely gobsmacked at how gross and racist the character was, to the point that I can't remember anything else at all about it. except maybe someone wakes up in a car outside a house party somewhere near the end? anyway, racist and not funny, if you didn't infer that already.

having read the thread I vaguely remember being grossed out by rapiness too, was that the car thing I was thinking of? anyway, horrible horrible movie and any country that gets up in arms about b&w archival editions of Tintin Au Congo with contextualising introductions but allowed this on video shelves should be cast out of the EU IMO
some of the Chow stuff in Hangover made me a bit squeamish, but Leong is a great clown so

How does a movie like The Party fit into this issue, it occurs to me? I mean I love that film, but I did always wonder about Seller's character in it.
― Trayce, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 02:32 (twelve years ago) link
anybody catch that Last Comic Standing from a few years ago (the year Iliza Schlesinger won) in the preliminaries, where that one dude did 'sketch comedy' where he pretended to be a Japanese fighter pilot getting taken down by an American?
that was like the worst thingin the history of man
― Neanderthal, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 03:58 (twelve years ago) link
The Party is another one where I saw it as a grown-up after everyone in the world had been going "lol this movie is a classic everyone can enjoy over and over again" for years and my reaction was "wtf this shit is disgusting"

from that trailer it looks like he could have played a goofy dude of his own ethnicity and it would have been just as fucking awesome
i have to see this movie

LOL I dont remember that "you meshuggah!" "I'm not your sugar!" joke.
― Trayce, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 06:40 (twelve years ago) link
Also yeah OTM on the fact he could have just played himself. which is why I mentioned this film - its like, what was the point of being indian? was being a goofball meant to be excused by being a naive "ethnic"?
― Trayce, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 06:41 (twelve years ago) link
well he couldn't have played himself because then the movie would be about a super weird asshole

Somehow also related: the German dub of "Harold and Kumar" has Kumar speaking with an absurd Apu from the Simpsons accent throughout, done by a German actor -- the dudes who dub his father and brother do not have the comedy accent.

what was the point of being indian?
Re: "The Party", I because the comedy Indian doctor was a character he'd already played in "The Millionairess" which in turn had led to the the hit single (with Sophia Loren), "Goodness Gracious Me".
― Tom D (Tom D.), Wednesday, 11 January 2012 15:05 (twelve years ago) link
I guess it's also kinda dodgy that the German trailer for Harold & Kumar advertises John Cho as "the Asian from American Pie"... Especially since Cho has exactly one line in AP, and it has nothing to do with being Asian. (He's one of the two guys discussing the meaning of "MILF".)
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 11 January 2012 15:14 (twelve years ago) link

think the character in the party is different from the one in the Millionairess? spike milligan, of course, was born in India, which may have rubbed off on sellars in some way...
