Dahlin, good work on the headlining of teh letters page today!

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I have been off sick and missed the Metro yesterday and today. Has WW3 erupted over Italian grammar, or was I ignored? And what was today's headline?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:51 (nineteen years ago) link

It involved the phrase "get me away from here I'm dying" so I'm guessing our Dahlin was involved in it.

Have you been writing in, Madchen? I have been driving to work and haven't seen the metro for weeks, but I was seconded to Glasgow today and got the train.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I was in print on Friday but it seems I may have done it without Dahlin's help. I hope so - it would feel like an even greater achievement (no offence).

Cathy, your Piers Luv baffles me a bit.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Madchen, me too! It has been on-off for about four years now, but in the last few weeks it has really peaked. I think it is the hot weather. I think I will shut up about him now though.

Cathy (Cathy), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Does Glasgow (or any subset thereof) want to go and see Roddy Frame + Trash Can Sinatras with me on 10th June? I am hoping it will not sell out before I get paid next week.

OK. It didn't sell out and I just bought a ticket. Does anyone want to come with me then, or do I stand about like a jangly-pop-loving loser on my own (alternative, anyone Fancy A Pint?)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Like I said.

Denver had Glasgow style rain, for a couple of days, I'm sure you'll all be glad to know.

Cathy, this Piers thing will have to be explained.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 23:29 (nineteen years ago) link

it was during the war

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:33 (eighteen years ago) link

glad you liked the headline ailsa, esp as it made no sense really. any other lyrics i should try to work in? i already snuck in a camera obscura title, tho i doubt anyone noticed.
yea lucy, your letter(s?) got in wholly on their own merit! woo hoo! cathy: all the goss involved various liasons with female staff who were later mysteriously moved around the company (and UK) with strange made-up job titles when things went sour.
ally: you'll have to try providence more soon! do let us know how she treats you.

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 2 June 2005 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

STUDENTS: Want a job? Be my conference minion for £250 for 5 days work from 31st July to 4th August (you'll probably get the afternoon of the 3rd off and a free dinner/bash at the Arches as well). Dahlin did this job two years ago and survived without too much mental scarring, I think. Email isec dot 2005 at strath dot ac dot uk if you're interested.

Stacey, the second letter wasn't from me - I noticed the name, but it's pure coincidence. That's why I was surprised you had nothing to do with it!

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:15 (eighteen years ago) link

"Cock Fun"

I mean the titles to be used thing, not being Madchen's minion.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 2 June 2005 11:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Madchen - what does yr minion need to do? i may know someone who could do a good job of it.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Can I be your minion please? That's the first week of my fortnight's holiday, I was planning going to Benicassim but that's not looking likely now. So I could earn an extra £250 quid then go on holiday the second week with some spendy money. Huzzah!

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 2 June 2005 15:39 (eighteen years ago) link

What was Lucy's letter about?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:05 (eighteen years ago) link

They are going to build a skyscraper in Glasgow. It is not for the oldies, apparently.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:06 (eighteen years ago) link

today i went for a star wars thing with 'Beasties bite back: Return of the midges'
took 20 minutes to come up with that. i suck

dahlin (dahlin), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

ps: lucy is an ace boss!

dahlin (dahlin), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

happy burpday cozen!

dahlin (dahlin), Friday, 3 June 2005 10:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Colin, I need 25 minions (!) to be part of my Conference Crew. Basically, they'll be helping out 1000 international delegates with things like finding their way around campus (Strathclyde, city centre), sorting out data projectors that are doing things they shouldn't, attending to keynote speakers, journalists, exhibitors... anything that might crop up really. It's really varied. If the person you know is IT literate, a team player, has good social skills and maybe speaks a foreign language (that bit's from the advert), I'm interested.

Sorry Ailsa, students only!

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 3 June 2005 11:36 (eighteen years ago) link

cheers Madchen, i'll give Sam your contact details, he's a student at Glasgow (not strathclyde) but who knows.

in other news...

i saw Miranda Sawyer on byres road yesterday, i had a strange impulse to go and speak to her even though i couldn't think of anything to say. thankfully i resisted.

i heart miranda sawyer. i saw her at t in the park a few years ago and in an exceedingly drunken state went over and told her how lovely i thought she was. i am still cringeing from that memory.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Monday, 6 June 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Alba might be a bit fond of her too, although I should let him speak for himself probably. He was getting a tan in the S of F last time I heard, though.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 6 June 2005 18:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I speak foreign languages. But I'm not a student. And I'm going to Benicassim. Rawk!

scotstvo (scotstvo), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I can pretend to be a student (I have badly dyed hair and a dubious dress sense). I'd rather be at Benicassim but this is looking less likely by the day.

Why does no-one want beer with me on Friday?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 6 June 2005 22:11 (eighteen years ago) link

i suggest everyone runs out and gets a copy of the metro tomorrow

dahlin (dahlin), Wednesday, 8 June 2005 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

More Madchen madness?

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Thursday, 9 June 2005 06:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Not guilty!

Also, was the Abi Stabber/Happy Slapper combo on p.20-21 done on purpose?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:19 (eighteen years ago) link

goodness gracious me!

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Who's going to write in to keep this U&K topic alive?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 09:57 (eighteen years ago) link

i was only responsible for the letters page lasnight
i was really bored actually.
today i have to venture to the SOUTH SIDE to the lost property office at the bus depot to collect some keys. i'm scared
also, i'm scared of RJG

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 9 June 2005 10:47 (eighteen years ago) link

the bus depot? south side? pah, that's the south side for pussies. it's eglinton toll! you can *see* the river from eglinton toll.

if you're, umm, very, very tall. or in a plane.

the real south side starts at battlefield, yo.

anyway. while you're at the bus depot, can you call them a bunch of total and utter cunts for scraping my car with their no 44? thanks.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:44 (eighteen years ago) link

.. holy shit!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:56 (eighteen years ago) link

RJG looks odd, in that picture.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think he's seen it yet - he was puzzled by my txt.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 11:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Hello Glasgow. I can't afford to visit you. I am sad about this.

Alix with an i ? (alix), Thursday, 9 June 2005 12:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Aw Lixi, even with free board and lodging?

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 9 June 2005 13:05 (eighteen years ago) link

RJG looks odd, in that picture.

If he had his tie done up tight he would look like one of the Krays.

I have been listening to 'Showbiz Kids', the Steely Dan compilation, over the last few days & thinking of RJG.

Mädchen, did you know that there is a Haribo museum in France? see

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I do love the RJG photo there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Stacey, you are the greatest human being ever to walk the earth. I just about wet myself with laughter when I picked up the Metro at work. Thank you!

I considered a response, but couldn't quite find the right words. Has anyone else taken up the gauntlet?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 9 June 2005 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Have a good holiday, Nick? Hope you are well and will see you soon. You should come through tomorrow evening for Neil's club thing (and pop quiz!) if you've nothing else to do.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 10 June 2005 21:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Crackign hols. Can't make it to Edinburgh tomorrow as it's the Winchester and I'm a guest DJ. Genuinely excellent band Foxface are playing too - should be good.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha! "Genuinely" excellent band.

No bother. Actually, pity I miss your guest DJing. I hope you will play "Ride the Tiger" by Jefferson Starship.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

THEY ARE "GENUINELY" EXCELLENT

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:33 (eighteen years ago) link

(Jefferson Starship that is - Foxface are really a load of old rope)

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha. I never thought a lot of Jefferson anything or Starship either until Mourinho gave me "Dragonfly", by Jefferson Starship. It's terrific, and I've listened to all the other 70s Jefferson Starship records and great they are too. I'm currently getting my friend into them.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Though, I did like "Jane". But then, who could blame me?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:37 (eighteen years ago) link

anyone (smog)ing?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 10 June 2005 22:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know what you mean.... I'm currently Billy Ocean-ing.
