Oh dude that's not at all what I meant when I said that! I was noting the weird sensation of seeing a situation where American racism seemed to behave like a constrained resource; it literally felt like there was a reservoir out of which racism was being doled and stuff that used to be spread mostly around Obama suddenly focused very heavily and intently on Jeremy Lin for like two weeks.

"the 9 lives of marion barry" actually opened my eyes a little bit to the nature of his support--back before he was a punchline he was a pretty radical figure, and now that he's on the council representing the poorest ward in the city & talking radical again people seem to have gotten behind him in numbers, probably half nostalgia for the ostensible good ol days & half believing his big promises.
