that took me a VERY LONG TIME

Pita Malört (Je55e), Thursday, 24 May 2012 03:38 (twelve years ago) link

and it still sucks

Pita Malört (Je55e), Thursday, 24 May 2012 03:38 (twelve years ago) link

Anyway, yes, jvc, I slash at my face with abandon. If I have a razor that is agreeable, I don't get nicked and I don't get razor burn. I have been using Walgreens brand single-blade disposable razors while waiting for my Dollar Shave Club order and those were very harsh. (I had to wait 2 months - a couple days after I placed my order they sent me an email saying that they were sorry but that that YT promo was more effective than they expected).

Pita Malört (Je55e), Thursday, 24 May 2012 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

OK, I guess I still don't know what a safety razor is -- those look weird. I use a Mach 3.

shave

I slash at my face with abandon.

This explains how you manage to cut your nose and ears so often while shaving.

jaymc, think of it this way. A straight razor is one straight blade and it's really easy to cut/kill yourself while using it. So in the late 1800s, some enterprising dude developed a safety razor, designed to be safer than the straight blade, that enclosed the blade. This was the first razor shaped like what we think of when we think of a shaving razor. The first pic Jesse posted is a straight razor, the second is a safety razor.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:28 (twelve years ago) link

What most people use these days are known as cartridge razors - they are either fully disposable, or the cartridge that houses the blades (what are they up to know? Like seven?) is disposable and you keep the handle.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:30 (twelve years ago) link

I don't know why I know this much about god damn razors.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:30 (twelve years ago) link

I knew about straight razors; I just didn't know the particular name for what I have for most of my life just called a razor. So a cartridge razor is a type of safety razor then? That would perhaps account for why Jesse's photo of a safety razor looks like a medical device.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:45 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry I am being annoying about this, btw. I was mostly bored last night (and waiting for Kr to Draw Something) when I piped up.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:47 (twelve years ago) link

I use a safety razor because the blades last a long time.

Jeff, Thursday, 24 May 2012 12:54 (twelve years ago) link

Next time you come over, John, you can see our safety razor in person.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:21 (twelve years ago) link

The faces that men make in the mirror while shaving their faces are something I would like for someone to capture in a photoessay. Not famous men, just regular men.
Like, do some men actually make this face while shaving?

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago) link

No one ever makes that face.

I sometimes stretch out my cheek muscles in such a way that makes my mouth exaggeratedly downturned.

And shaving enthusiast blogs (no joke) point out that the term "safety" was used to promote a more foolproof product that would increase profits for Big Shaving by introducing the first disposable blades.

Plus I shave my ears...

Hey do you all want to know the epilogue to my ear ailment saga? Great! I went to an ENT yesterday and I've got a hole in my left eardrum and lots of fluid trapped behind swelling in both of my ears, so I'm temporarily deaf as hell, but it's probably not infected anymore at least. They gave me a steroid to stop the swelling and I can already feel it working, I think. The hole should heal okay and I'll be able to hear again.

Did you know... an ENT can look in your ears with a microscope? An ear microscope that they stick right into your ear! CRAZY.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

safety razor = removable razor blade, handle, blade set perpendicularly to handle

mh, Thursday, 24 May 2012 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

congrats on yr eardrum hole, carl

i just use an electric razor

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 May 2012 14:44 (twelve years ago) link

i hope those steroids don't make you feel crazy, carl! also congrats on the eardrum hole heal.

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 14:49 (twelve years ago) link

I totally make faces to make shaving easier. That is, when I shaved regularly.

Steve Youngblood (dan m), Thursday, 24 May 2012 14:56 (twelve years ago) link

I wore purple shorts today so if the steroids make me go crazy, I'll be dressed appropriately.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

(it's just a medrol dosepak. limited dosage, limited time, and I'm not bipolar (prednisone can precipitate manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder (but this isn't prednisone, either)) so we're all good.)

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 15:12 (twelve years ago) link

Nick, I am shocked that you use only an electric razor.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Thursday, 24 May 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

why? i'm not a very hairy person and also i JUST DON'T GIVE A FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 May 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

Shaving has actually been on my mind a lot in 2012. After I shaved my beard early in the year, I bought this fancy expensive Italian shaving cream at Merz Apothecary. I really liked it and found that it gave me a closer shave, but then I got really into trying to get my shave as close as possible, and in the process I think I did more damage than good in the form of cuts and razor burn. Eventually I realized that some parts of my face/neck are just never going to be super-smooth, and it's dumb to try to get the other parts that way, because then it looks uneven. The end.

(prednisone can precipitate manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder (but this isn't prednisone, either)) so we're all good.)

um really?
because that sounds suspiciously like what happened to me when i was given prednisone for a stress-induced rash

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

i have been thinking a lot about shaving also.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

That's what the doc told me. I wouldn't take it as evidence of bipolar disorder, but it's definitely something you might bring up to a doc if s/he wants to prescribe it again.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

i really hate shaving. i wish i could grow proper facial hair.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link

i really like having stubble or a beard but i think my beard is too intense for my face. it's super wiry and i always get ingrown hairs/razor bumps. i think i'm stuck with shaving for my own safety.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link

oh interesting:

• Many African-American men benefit from using a single-blade razor, or a DE razor. Dr. Joely Kaufman explains, “I highly dissuade patients who suffer from razor bumps from using triple or quadruple blade razor systems. The closer the shave, the worse the razor bumps will be.”

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link

I've been thinking about shaving a lot because it's warm out and now I have to shave my stupid legs. At least long skirts are fashionable this season so I can get away with shaving once/week.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:39 (twelve years ago) link

carl, when the doc looked into your ear, did they have a screen where you could see what they were seeing? the audiologist i went to had that, it was crazy.

actually when i went to pick up my ear plugs i'd been getting weird crackling in one ear every time i swallowed or touched it. she went in with the ear camera and found that i had a hair stuck to my ear drum, which was acting like a piece of paper stuck to a speaker. she went in with a tweezers and grabbed it, it was so satisfying.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago) link

NO thank god I did not see my fucked up ear insides on a screen. I have seen my cervix on a TV screen, and I nearly passed out (and there was nothing wrong with me! The doc was just like "Check it out, it's your cervix lol") so there's no way I want to see my diseased, hole-y inner ears.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:45 (twelve years ago) link

i am definitely not taking prednisone again unless i have some VERY serious reason to take it. i don't think i'm bipolar, but it was a rough time and that shit was like crazy hot sauce on my brain.

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, you should mention that reaction any time a doc wants to prescribe you a steroid.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:56 (twelve years ago) link

any steroid, I meant, as in not just prednisone. "Crazy hot sauce on my brain" is very descriptive and sounds awful.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:57 (twelve years ago) link

it was a perfect storm of events, but yes i will dr carl. i will. it was not a good time.

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago) link

John mc, I recommend you check out Dollar Shave Club. Fucking Mach 3 and all those cartridges are EXPENSIVE. $6 for 4 good razor cartridges is amazing, IMO. Plus the founder and CEO in that video is lovable.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Thursday, 24 May 2012 18:07 (twelve years ago) link

Cool. I wonder if there will now be an asterisk on this record:

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

^^which, all joking aside, is something I'd LOVE to try to do

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

Somebody who writes for a local publication is riding all of the bus lines start to finish and writing about it. I think that sounds kind of cool. Or the guys who walked the entire length of Halsted. I don't think I'd want to beat the CTA record, because there's no much running, but I'm generally interested in this kind of stuff.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

I had a friend who visited all of the dive bars directly off the red line south of Jackson. I don't remember how it went for him, but it sounded like fun.

game of crones (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

cta record seems pretty beatable with luck, based on the descriptions in that article

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

That new train station is a block away from Haymarket, which brings that bar into reasonable happy hour territory (especially for me since I can get the Green/Pink Line here).
