thanks Je55e. i don't expect anyone to stand up for me, but it is nice to know that i'm not the only that notices some of this stuff. i guess thats what is bugging me today. it isn't just that, on no poster x decided to give me shit today. its more that its poster x today, poster y yesterday, poster z in a different thread. each of these posters seems to think, "oh come on, what i say to you isn't that big of a deal", but its like, cumulatively, this shit gets to be a drag and bums me out on ilx on the whole.

frank deford is terrible but in kind of an amusing way

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

guyzzzzzzzzzzzz please stop talking about whiney. He is not here, and I really really really would hate to see the Chicago thread turn into a Chicago v. Whiney referendum.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sorry. I'm being the thread police but it's 100% fear based aggression.

i remember n/a defending frank deford before, and i continue to remember that every time i hear frank deford and think about how much i can't stand him

the all-day posting professional ilx cru are the WORST

DX Dx DX (dan m), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

it def tells you something about how highly ilx values its trolls that (a certain amphibian poster) not only hasn't been banned, but has a small contingent of people that defend his "persona"

all-day posting professional ilx cru

omg copyright that because it's brilliant

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

Honestly I feel some sympathy for amphib-bs these days b/c of the knee-jerk pile on to literally (almost literally) every single thing he says, regardless of its being totally uncontroversial.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

i can definitely see that, he did get piled on a lot. i started to feel some sympathy for him at one point, but then he said something totally racist again and i got over it.

LOL Spin Doctors

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

lol

I can't tell if that one in the first column is 'Suede' or 'Svede' but if the former, fuck that, because I'd love to find some cheap used Suede to fill in some gaps in my collection.

Btw, Jon, I very much sympathize with your feelings about ILX. I occasionally felt like a punching bag around here ca. 2004-06. Whenever people mock or criticize me, especially if I feel it arises from a misunderstanding, my natural instinct is to become defensive and explanatory. And so that happened a lot, and it never really did much good.

I don't know that I ever adapted in the sense of developing a thicker skin or learning to brush things off, but over time, because of changes in my personal life, I began to feel less emotionally invested in ILX (even as I continued to enjoy the community) and so I simply didn't participate as often in those kinds of heated conversations. Also, a couple of my "enemies" stopped posting or posted less often. Not sure if that's ultimately helpful, but I wanted to throw it out there anyway.

What are the words before "pitchforky"? looks like:

everyday "pitchforky" - I just getting everyone prepared for the 2010's.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:04 (eleven years ago) link

And so that happened a lot

I just reread this thread, hoo boy:

everyday "pitchforky" - I just getting everyone prepared for the 2010's.

I think it's "everything," not "everyday." The implication is that in a few years, all the Pitchfork faves from 2000-09 will be as unwanted as the Spin Doctors are today.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks jaymc, I think that is really pretty similar to how I feel. I dig myself into those holes because I want to overexplain stuff when misunderstandings arise or someone misinterprets one of my posts, but it just makes things worse.

xp In my view, history has been much kinder to you (jaymc) in that thread than it was to those other assholes.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

Ha, "history."

The Noise Board at its peak was a strange thing.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

yeah was that like the first major ilx crisis? or like the first major shift in ilx tone?

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

crisis on infinite boards

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

I think the tone of ILX gradually evolved in its first few years as the sheer number of posters increased and the geographic balance shifted from the UK to the US. But the tone of the early Noise Board did feel significantly different, and I think it's definitely had a big impact on the board as a whole.

Fucking kids and their ironic detachment and fear of sincerity IMO. Which is kind of rich coming from me but whatever I'm old and I have feelings now.

Hey! One last reminder that tonight is PIZZA NIGHT. Thank you.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

i ordered our pizza at like 7:30 this morning

Thunderstorm and rain. This drought is a major bummer, but a rain storm helps lift buoy the spirits at least.

this is pretty much why I took a break from ilx. but now instead of leaving altogether I will just avoid engaging certain posters.

hi btw!

LL, this post reminded me of what you were saying about using references to gate-keep:

Giving 'normal people' pop-cultural references or long words that are just one shade too obscure for that particular person to get, requiring convoluted explanation.

Those aren't the kids anymore. +30 = irony. -30 = absurdity.
