Mark G, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

Two Lane Blacktop is early 70s.

Badlands?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

You'd think so, but no--that's early '70s. (I was wrong on the Cisco Pike year--'72, not '71.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

Not Badlands, either--'73.

Spectrist, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

No--but there's a still from that that's somewhat similar.

And Paris, Texas, too.

Close Encounters?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

I guess that's not really a cult film is it.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

Thinking about Dreyfuss in his pick-up, wouldn't doubt there's a similar shot in that. You've got the right year.

vanishing point?

, Blogger (schlump), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

That's 71

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

Should I give the answer so someone else can put one up?

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

American?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

Sorcerer?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

Vanishing Point was my first thought, but yeah, it's early '70s and the director isn't well known. Not Duel either.

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

American, yes...Kael loved it, director went on to win an Academy Award.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:20 (eleven years ago) link

No idea then.

The Late Show?

Spectrist, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

in which decade did he win an oscar?

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:22 (eleven years ago) link

He won Best Director in the '90s.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

That narrows it down to four possibilities--three, really.

fit and working again, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

rob, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

The Gauntlet??!

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

I'll be honest I never thought of that as a cult film if that's the answer.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

Wow--fits all the clues, but no.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

ho wmany moveis seem to have th emessage "The american south and midwest is evil"

The Cheerfull Turtle (Latham Green), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

Not this one--I think both Kael and Simon compared the director to Renoir in terms of loving his characters.

clemenza, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry--missed a post! Yes, Handle with Care/Citizen's Band--that's Paul Le Mat in the truck. I never thought that'd be so hard with the initial clues.

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

I remember it as being quite good, but that's based on having seen it 25 years ago at least. The only way you can guy it is on VHS, so that makes a huge difference in how well it's known.

PressAnarchyToContinue (Ste), Friday, 7 April 2017 11:43 (seven years ago) link

that is Cold Turkey, a satire of smalltown America (and cigarette smoking) directed and co-written by Norman Lear, starring Dick Van Dyke and Bob Newhart, well worth seeking out.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 April 2017 19:27 (seven years ago) link

the still above the Van Dyke one is Ray (Goulding) of Bob & Ray parodying Walter Cronkite
