Sounds like a pile of horseshit from Instagram, considering that the whole reason they gave for replacing their original not-live but aesthetically superior filters with the current crop was that live filters were an important feature. If they bring back the old filters, I’ll say hip-hip-hooray. If they stick with the current meh filters and remove live previewing, I say boo-hiss.
Remember the Gotham filter?
i know being a tech pundit means you have to care a lot abt a lot of inconsequential things but Remember the Gotham filter? is killing me

Another typographic boner: the Kindle still lacks hyphenation but yet insists upon full-justified text.
indefensible

Oh I mean of course any e-reader would be drastically improved by the TeX line-breaking algorithm, but on the other hand, where the fuck does "but yet" come from?
― www.toilet-guru.com (silby), Thursday, 11 October 2012 01:06 (eleven years ago) link
I guess it does seem strange to force justification without hyphenation. They could have made that an option, right?
I wonder why they haven't nabbed TeX's H&Js, like you say. InDesign 1 was doing that in real-time on a 500mhz G3; there's surely enough power and time to do it during a page refresh on kindle. I must be missing something.

books are typeset by professionals. never really seen a kindle, do they do it nice or is it just all computerized?
― j., Thursday, 11 October 2012 03:03 (eleven years ago) link
Books are typeset by professionals. There are good algorithms for doing justified line-breaking with hyphenation. eReaders do not implement them because someone is lazy.

so I thought maybe I just hated only a certain type of justification but then I read the wikipedia entry and man justification sounds so !complicated, perhaps all the fonts in the world should just be monospaced
― 乒乓, Thursday, 11 October 2012 12:29 (eleven years ago) link
even w/monospacing you need hyphenation.

Not any more! Joined a start-up a couple of weeks ago.
The hyphenation thing is hard, but I'm not sure, knowing how crazy-obsessed with typography Jeff B is, why the reader guys have not gotten proper hyphenation into the devices.

Kottke figures that Daring Fireball brings in $650,000 a year: http://kottke.org/12/11/stay-small-or-go-big
― Elvis Telecom, Friday, 9 November 2012 23:26 (eleven years ago) link
* If John Gruber manages the Daring Fireball’s Syndicated Feed Sponsorship he’ll earn $8,500 per week. If 52 sponsorships were available per year, he’d earn $442,000 per year. He’ll also receive $19 per year, per Daring Fireball member.
* Daring Fireball is a member of the Deck ad network. The Deck’s standard rate is $8,600 per ad, per month. However, a “roadblock” ad is available for $8,600 per ad, per day. Revenue is shared between Coudal Partners, Inc. and the Deck’s members.
* John Gruber is an Amazon.com associate. If he’s in Amazon’s top-tier, he receives an 8.5% commission per product shipped or downloaded. He’d also receive an additional commission for qualified categories (e.g. he’d receive an additional 4% per “electronic product” shipped).
* John Gruber is the host of The Talk Show, a podcast on Mule Radio Syndicate (a podcast network managed by Mule Design and Caleb Sexton). Each episode features two sponsors. A sponsorship costs $2,500 per episode. If 104 sponsorships were available per year, The Talk Show would earn $260,000 per year.

I agree with every single word, including his idea to draw the “wealthy” line at $500,000, not $250,000.
