who was that guy that used to put on shows, brought over us bands and stuff and paid for it all out of his own pocket because he was really ill, or something? began with D. whatever happened to him?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

Bob Mills (yeah, no need to google-proof that!). He was a friend of mine for a while, and after he'd lost loads of other friends. Its a long long story, which I will not post online out of a wierd sense of loyalty I still feel to him. If you really want to know mail me offboard and I'll see if I can fill in the blanks. The email address above should work.

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:12 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, i'd like to know that i think, i'll mail later today, thanks

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:14 (twenty years ago) link

Dbob?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

Of course, this also proves the Edinburgh degrees-of-separation thesis, yet again.

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

That's because it's true!

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

Gareth, there's a Big Wheel and a little mini German christmas market type thing next to the Scott Monunment just now, worth a wee look - the view from the top of the wheel is grebt.

smee (smee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

(the view from the Scott Monument is better, but you have to climb lots and lots of stairs)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:24 (twenty years ago) link

I am going to check out Harvey Nicks and Zara in the sales, but they'll be over by February. Whenever I go to Edinburgh, I seem to either be going to one specific place or to a friend's house (which I guess is also one specific place) and then I get the last train home. I'm quite looking forward to a wander. If there's a FAP I could be persuaded to come across.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

b-b-b Caitlin, the wheel is right next to the monument, almost as tall AND it goes round - do you see?

smee (smee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

True. Personally, though, I think the wheel is better in the dark, what with all the lights and everything; so the view doesn't really matter.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:33 (twenty years ago) link

I really want to go on that wheel but nobody will come with me! Admittedly I am scared that it will break while I am at the top and I will die of hypothermia before they rescue me.

None of you would recognise me, however I am sort of cheating because I've only lived here for two months and know about three people. I work at Peckhams though so if you know where it is come in and say hi and buy some expensive food.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:41 (twenty years ago) link

peckham's started in glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:06 (twenty years ago) link

I know. It is a large organisation.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

most of them are in glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:10 (twenty years ago) link

I believe so. I've never been to glasgow though so I have no actual evidence.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:13 (twenty years ago) link

; )

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:15 (twenty years ago) link

There are at least two of them in Edinburgh.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:40 (twenty years ago) link

Peckhams rules the stomach but not the wallet.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 19 December 2003 13:34 (twenty years ago) link

The food is yummy and we get to sample all the new cakes! Which is good. Obviously.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

I think there are three and a half/four in glasgow and the best one is in glasgow OK.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:23 (twenty years ago) link

If you say so. I never actually go in; just look at the bottles of expensive vodka and other spirits in the window.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:10 (twenty years ago) link

was anyone else at the SL records thing in edinburgh last night? because I was. Maybe we saw each other across the crowded room! (although it wasn't that crowded really)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:14 (twenty years ago) link

It was far too crowded. And smokey. I always forget how much indie kids think chain-smoking is cool. Please tell me you were not one of the couple dancing at the front during Ballboy who *really* needed to get a room.

alext (alext), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:51 (twenty years ago) link

Ha ha I sound like an old curmudgeon.

alext (alext), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:51 (twenty years ago) link

But Gordon obviously thought that when he read my review on NYLPM of their last Edinburgh Gig...

alext (alext), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:57 (twenty years ago) link

wow were you there? I am very tall and have blonde hair and was with my friend graeme who has sideburns, we went halfway through ballboy because we were v tired but I liked the starlets. I helped my friend on the door for most of the third band because he knows the promoter (ed or something?)

what do you look like alext? (this is not a chat up line honest)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Sunday, 21 December 2003 20:33 (twenty years ago) link

the starlets are from glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 December 2003 00:57 (twenty years ago) link

I remember when peckhams in bruntsfield used to be nastuiks - i used to get my lunch from there when i was at school, they did lovely filled rolls.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:32 (twenty years ago) link

Back in Edinburgh.

Kathryn, I am short -> medium height, short blondish hair.

I know Ed very well from uni, and my g/f was the bridesmaid at Merlin (co-runner of SL records)'s wedding.

And the Starlets are a great band -- they deserve to do really big things, and they have the best front man since Dan from Khaya toned stuff down with Desc. I am also gutted I missed the SL records party in Glasgow. Apparently Desc played the whole of _The Lost Feeling_, the last Khaya release.

alext (alext), Thursday, 1 January 2004 13:12 (twenty years ago) link

Does anybody dislike Edinburgh?

kayT (kaytee), Thursday, 1 January 2004 13:29 (twenty years ago) link

Alot of Glaswegians - or at least they pretend to.

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 1 January 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

Is bert's bar on william st still there? It was a lovely little place but someone told me it had shut.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago) link

Is this the same Bert's Bar?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

how much does it cost to rent a flat in edinburgh?

david. (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

i don't know but hopefully i will soon find out. If anyone needs a very tidy and lovely flatmate, then...don't ask me (ho ho ho). However I am very good at watching tv and commenting loudly and annoyingly on what people are wearing. Also on eating all your food.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago) link

ask me! ask me!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:36 (twenty years ago) link

ask you what? do you need a flat in edinburgh? do you want to live with me? I will do all your washing-up!

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago) link

(this may be a lie)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago) link

what you moving to embra for?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago) link

If anyone needs a very tidy and lovely flatmate, then... 'ask me! ask me!' :)

for work, colin, touch wood. well hopefully. the sc0ttish l4w c0mmission reprazent!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago) link

Edinburgh is great. But it's very cold this time of year. Search out the Dr Jekyl and My Hyde bar which serves some great cocktail and if you want indie tunes go to The Liquid Rooms. If you want to feel like the only white face in Harlem there's an R and B club under a bridge somewhere, but I quite like it cos a really nice girl came on to me when I was last there and I stupidly didn't take up her advances as I was trying to fix shit out with my ex at the time. I think I was the only indie kid in there.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:47 (twenty years ago) link

David wants indie tunes alright. im sure he would love the jeckyl and hyde too.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago) link

and the castle.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago) link

that's my name you're ruining!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:59 (twenty years ago) link

oh my goodness i went to the liquid rooms last friday. it was my friend's choice. It was the shitest indie club i have been to in many a year and I kissed a man wearing a trucker hat. I am ashamed.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:02 (twenty years ago) link

i hope you slagged off his clothes first.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago) link

no i tried on his hat. then threw it on the floor as i recall.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, but if you want to kop with neds you get what you deserve sweetheart. You really should have more class, women who get off with neds just have, like, no respect from me at all.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago) link

??? how does trucker hat = ned? were you not around for the infamous trucker hat wars of 2003? trucker hat = likes momus, or something like that, can't quite remember now. anyway he was australian so he can't have been a ned.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:12 (twenty years ago) link

oh yeah, perhaps it's relevant that i live in gorgie, but tbh having lived in london for seven years getting from one side of edinburgh to the other feels like a gentle morning stroll

no one can answer because edinburgh is just populated by airbnb guests

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 19:13 (five years ago) link

People I know in Edinburgh are always moaning about the music scene and having to go to Glasgow to see stuff. Still a great city to live in, I think.

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link

What kind of music?

Braw Gigs are good if you're into weird noise/metal/punk/other stuff: https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Cause/Braw-Gigs-117804704978695/ // http://brawmusic.tumblr.com

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

Hmm, I'd recommend reading The Skinny https://www.theskinny.co.uk/ for info on upcoming gigs, culture and events across the central belt.

These are a couple decent Edinburgh gig promoters that spring to mind:

https://www.facebook.com/songbytoadrecords/

https://www.facebook.com/nothingeverhappensheresummerhall/

Although I'm now in Manchester and haven't been along yet this will surely be a fun night which is ran by some friends that used to do the massively entertaining 'This is Music' gig/club nights
https://www.facebook.com/supperclubedinburgh

Other irregular dance all night club nights (10pm-3am usually) that are grand: Stacks (soul/Motown/Northern Soul), Unpop (jangle pop/twee/C86), The Egg (Rock 'n' Roll, Garage, New Wave, Psychedelia,Soul and Punk) and Mjolk (Scandi Pop).

Keep an eye on the Wee Red Bar https://www.weeredbar.co.uk/listings.htm at the Art School and Henry's Cellar Bar https://www.facebook.com/Henryscellarbar/ for some more alternative stuff.

You're also not far from the best pizza in Edinburgh - Pizzeria 1926 - Napoli style pizza at phenomenal value.

Oh and I have to say since you're in Gorgie check out Hearts if you like football and have no Scottish football allegiances. Great stadium and it looks like it will be a great wee season for us (we will definitely fall apart by mid-October).

Ctrl+Alt+Del in Poughkeepsie (fionnland), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 22:16 (five years ago) link

I should note Stacks and Unpop have been fairly dead for a while but I think revives were round the corner?

Ctrl+Alt+Del in Poughkeepsie (fionnland), Tuesday, 4 September 2018 22:17 (five years ago) link

great, thanks! will keep an eye on all of these.

yeah we're right next to tynecastle. my childhood / hereditary scottish football allegiances are to rangers, so i'll be happy to ditch that and pretend i'm a lifelong jambo.

tbh glasgow is dying on it's arse right now with the abc and art school closure, due to fire, the arches closed due to council incompetence. you're better off where you are with access to Summerhall.
