Also have seen at least two cartoons mysterious casting Obama as Wimpy from the Popeye cartoons. So one of those has to be just an obvious shameless rip-off, right? How do you look yourself in the mirror doing that?

I choose to interpret the first one as the republican party desperately grasping for the real world, symbolized by Obama, yet failing, and tumbling down into the darkness. It's probably not meant that way.

Seriously squinting both my eyes and my brain to parse this out. goole, that's interesting - is there a book or anything that discusses this? I've always sort of bought the myth that it made no difference/impact beyond "turning ordinary people into criminals" and providing a foundation for organized crime, etc. But what you say makes a ton of sense.

I know that a lot of business associations were in favor of prohibition because workers had a tendency to show up drunk, which is anecdotal support for the truly grotesque amount of drinking people did. Also the temperance movement was largely women because of the link between drinking and domestic violence, plus men being too drunk to work and financially support their families.

(Learned that at a lecture on prohibition at the Chicago History Museum, so I can't link to anything.)
