a, have you heard this dariush dolat-shahi recording that got reissued last month? it's persian classical music w/ buzzy-bleepy-bloopy analogue synths from the '60s w/ added cricket and bird sounds:

Since I broke out of my multi-year depressness, I no longer hate music, but I still have a knee-jerk reaction of hating it, but then I remember that that's fixed.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 18:29 (eleven years ago) link

Xp I haven't but I will! That sounds great!!

passion it person (La Lechera), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

Anyway, John, hurry up.

If you don't give a fuck about sequencing, it's on Spotify already. Might still add or sub out some tracks, of course.

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

idgaf about sequencing. Are you jaymc on there? Assuming I can figure out how to add people?

carl agatha, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

No, seriously, how do you add people? I've managed to add five people throughout my Spotify career, but now I can't find a "find people you know" or "add friends" button or anything.

Honestly no pressure, but if you get a FB account I will tell you a secret.

You might be surprised at how unpersuasive that is.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

Plus you'll tell me whatever it is anyway.

dansplaining (dan m), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

Anybody here have anything anecdotal to share about the Wr1ght F0undation? I was supposed to go to an event there tonight with a friend who's been involved with them for a little while, and I thought to actually research them today aaaaaaaand it looks like they're some weird amalgam of Sc13ntology and EST. So I won't be attending that particular event. But now I'm wondering if I need to hire a vanful of deprogrammers to help out my friend.

New Testes Leper (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

We don't have any NY lurkers here any more, I don't think, but I saw this on fb and thought it was weird.

Never heard of that foundation.
What is the origin of that map? Who made it?

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

This guy, apparently.

I produce and direct a majority of the events for Steampunk Chicago as well as act as one of the primary contributors to the blog www. SteampunkChicago.com
So, not a sociologist or other person trained in the social sciences, then?

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

Nope just some dork like the rest of us. Well, with steampunk.

dansplaining (dan m), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

Then DISREGARD/IGNORE

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

double ignore for steampunk

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

Kind of funny, though, inasmuch as it feels right.

If you like scientific breakdowns of Chicago's neighborhoods, here's an interesting one that compares the types of waste disposed: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/The-312/December-2012-1/A-Look-at-Chicago-Through-Its-Trash/

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

Tho I don't know enough about either Edison Park or Staten Island to say whether that one makes sense.

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

(Re the steampunkers' map.)

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

I feel cheated, Lechera promised me she lived in the equivalent of the Bronx.

grossly incorrect register (in orbit), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

I just mean what are his criteria? Population? Ethnic composition? Poverty/wealth? Geography? Access to transportation? General ~vibe~ according to him? Stuff like this drives me nuts.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure a lot of it is ~vibe~. Like, "Brooklyn" is the hipster enclaves of Logan Square, Wicker Park, Pilsen. "Queens" is working-class white, "Bronx" is working-class Latino.

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:41 (eleven years ago) link

Ok then I officially don't care about that map.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:43 (eleven years ago) link

BTW I only said the Bronx because when I went there (once) the train ride was roughly the same length from the place I was staying in Brooklyn as my train ride from home to a similarly located place. My comparison was unscientific and poorly informed at best. I just wanted to illustrate time, distance, and effort required to get from one place to another.

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

it should be like a middle ages-style map with a massive compass and "WARNING: HERE THERE BE HYPSTERS" in calligraphy and ornate illustrations of cheap tacos and frat boys and strawmen

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

i bet if i made prints of that, people would buy it. too bad i'm lazy!!!!! ;)

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

haha

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

I'm just gonna ask this here because I know one of you will know the answer -- who is responsible for that current top pop hit song that sounds exactly like the Police?

passion it person (La Lechera), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

Bruno Mars, "Locked Out of Heaven". I've not liked him before, but that one is really growing on me.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

Not sure I've heard that one? I was going to guess Gotye.

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

Garfield Park?
No thonx.

I know that I have a disgusting mind, but the second column made me pause, re-read, pause, then chuckle.

It totally is Bruno Mars! I swear, within the first 10 seconds you can hear The Police. Not a bad song, at least I don't hate it.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:24 (eleven years ago) link

Yep, I was 100% confident that that was the song you were thinking of, as I thought the exact same thing within 10 seconds of the first time I heard it.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 12 December 2012 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

So far today I've listened to Big Black, The Jesus Lizard, and Monster Magnet so I am clearly in some kind of a mood.
