Was that the Ronald D Moore show I heard about?
― Gukbe, Thursday, 7 February 2013 15:08 (eleven years ago) link
It was going to be called Precinct 17 iirc?
― lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Thursday, 7 February 2013 15:11 (eleven years ago) link
Oh, 17th Precinct, which is a terrible name. Yeah, that's the Moore. I thought it was completely great! Stockard Channing and Tricia Helfer, y'all!

To be fair, I have no idea how anyone could execute the House of the Undying scene well. There was a lot going on there.

It was seriously cool. Where we would use electricity, they used a magic life-force sourced from growing plants. It sounds gimmicky but it was inserted smoothly and not explained except by demonstration--a quick shot of the Golden Gate bridge turned into a giant trellis and covered with verdant growth, wall planters in people's homes in the backgrounds of shots, etc.

From what I know about that pilot, it's probly a good thing it didn't air.
I think Ron Moore made it in Vancouver with BSG castmembers

Sorry for insulting anyone. I realize that Game of Thrones is pretty lightweight G-rated material.
Anyway, I'm just gonna stare at the bud gif for a while and chill out.

Something else Nate and I can agree on is the primacy of Gene Wolfe. I kind of DON'T hope they try to adapt The New Sun though. It feels impossible.

True. But I would watch it. And better HBO than anyone else... I've always been scared it would get the Dr Who treatment someday.

I'd prefer to see HBO tackle an SF property next, maybe the Culture novels.

RFI LONG TERM ARC: my human woman-friend is upset about gender roles in this mideval/fantasy series. Do the ladies get to do stuff besides get drilled; married off or should I resign myself to watching this... myself? No need to sugar coat it.
Follow up: Is there an episode we should jump to in order to calm her fears of a 16-ep rapefest?

NB - we barely made it thru the first episode
there's some strong female characters but probably not enough to balance out that stuff if you're already balking at ep #1

Jimmy,
The books do a good job of focusing on the stories of many different female characters, detailing how they live in a very harsh world that is particularly bad for women and how they each must develop their own personal strategies for navigating and succeeding in such difficult environment.
So far the HBO series has followed these same stories, but it tends to undermine them by throwing in lots of unnecessary sex and nudity that didn't show up in the novels. Any time a potential titilating detail is hinted at in the books, it turns into a soft core porn scene in the tv show. Plus the bulk of additional scenes in the tv show that were not in the books are sex scenes.
