i just assume whenever i go out there's a 20% chance i'm going to get shot for no reason whatsoever

stay home, at least get shot by someone you love

I spend the first ten minutes of every movie contemplating the 'vision cones' of imaginary shooters and planning our escape route
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 17:59 (ten years ago) link
I can't tell if you're joking or not but I basically plan escape routes wherever I go, under the assumption one day I will need to run for my life from a crazy person/racist

Yeah, I've been in that mode since Aurora. Movies, supermarkets, restaurants, back-to-school night.
― how's life, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:06 (ten years ago) link
I've been in that mode since I was 8.
― SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:08 (ten years ago) link
Holy shit. That sounds stressful. So you always have it in the back of your head that someone might go crazy in the public places you go to?
Reminds me of how I read somewhere that "guys" always size each other up and figure out who are "potential threats" in bars &c. I have never ever done anything like this (and yes, I'm male), and I find it really hard to believe that's a common thing. The idea just makes me laugh and think of the "ocular patdown" in Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I always have it in the back of my head that someone might violently object to my presence because I'm a black man in America and statistics aren't in my favor.
― SHAUN (DJP), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:19 (ten years ago) link
protip you should be able to go to a movie and annoy people without fear of getting fucking shot

Oh man. Being a white guy in Norway = privilege of mooning around completely oblivious to the world as a cruel place.
― Øystein, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:52 (ten years ago) link
xp I was not joking. This is relatively new to me, a privilege of being middle class and white in the USA

Well now that Anders Behring Breivik is locked up, for sure
― Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:07 (ten years ago) link
well, the flipside to that is afaict Anders Breivik is an aberration in Norway, whereas there are probably close to a million people in the US who are likely to shoot someone in the next five minutes

I remember being dragged along with my class into a semi-trailer parked outside of our elementary school where some guy explained the dangers of driving around railroad crossing barriers. He pointed to a 7-segment countdown display on the wall and noted that someone dies from a train collision every time the clock counts down to zero. I don't understand the purpose of this education given that we were all under 10 years of age and could not drive. It just gave me a general feeling of dread and insecurity when in the car with my parents. He also explained to us that we should run toward the approaching train if our vehicle were ever stuck on the tracks. That way, post collision debris would not kill us.
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:39 (ten years ago) link
anyway, DJP's countdown reminded me of this is all. sorry for the derail. run towards the derail. carry on.
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:41 (ten years ago) link
post collision debris would not kill us
presumably because the train would kill you first? idgi
― Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:44 (ten years ago) link
i think he means if you're in a car about to get hit by a train, instead of running away from the train (in the same direction the car and its debris would be flying) run towards and past the train, in the opposite direction it's going.
― christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:45 (ten years ago) link
I would think instinctively you'd run away from the track (perpendicular to the direction the train is travelling). I guess running towards the train might be better, but if the train derails, which seems likely, it might be dangerous to be too close to the track, even if you're upstream from the point of impact.
― o. nate, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:48 (ten years ago) link
yes, I think there will be a wide debris cone that you are trying to avoid. The original instruction may have involved a smaller angle than 180 degrees relative to the train's vector to account for track proximity. I don't remember.
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:52 (ten years ago) link
So, running at a 45 degree angle (where running toward the train is 0 deg) would be best?
― nickn, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:56 (ten years ago) link
Of course then you have to worry about which side . . . I guess for that you'd take track curvature into account.
― nickn, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:57 (ten years ago) link
run away from the train at a 65 degree angle, then turn around and run directly at its side

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link
well if the train's vector were pointed at 0 degrees, I'd imagine that running at something around 135 degrees is best. But if there's a safe distance from the track that must be obtained, you'd have to modify this accordingly while also knowing the velocity of the train.
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link
i was told there would be no math on this thread
so fire a gps transmitter at the train from your utility belt before doing anything
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:00 (ten years ago) link
all train conductors should be required to wear gps hats for this reason
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:01 (ten years ago) link
the real question is how to run away from someone shooting at you. is the ever-popular zigzag still the best?
― ryan, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:01 (ten years ago) link
well if you thing about vision cones, it can be best to run toward a safe exit on the side of the room of the shooter. if you run away from the shooter, he will see you.
― Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:03 (ten years ago) link
actually if someone's shooting at people, the recommendation I've heard (from "safety professionals") is to freeze. shooters prone to shooting things that move.
― Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:03 (ten years ago) link
approximate the shooter (or train) as a sphere with a cone of debris emission and act accordingly

that is interesting shakey mo, I had not read that.
al otm
yeah I thought that was interesting. it was part of the annual safety presentation in my office building, along with what to do in the event of fire, earthquake, bomb threat etc.

I dunno, I played Quake deathmatches online a bunch back in the days, and people always killed the hell out of the frozen dudes.
