seems like a director also has a writing process like storyboarding or w/e that could get blocked but once youre filming you kinda just have to do it, which is prob the secret to overcoming writers block too

Recently watched this for the first time in a decade and was startled at how much Scheider resembles what Ryan Gosling could look like in another 10-15 years.

This movie is all time. Also, i just finished Fosse, the biography by Sam Wasson, would recommend to any Fosse fans out there.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 22:23 (ten years ago) link

It is. Not a particularly good movie, excellent mess (Eric Roberts nails the creep).

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 22:41 (ten years ago) link

The originally planned star of All That Jazz was someone with a greater resemblance to Fosse: Richard Dreyfuss.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 January 2014 02:15 (ten years ago) link

I thought they offered it to Paul Newman

If you want to see them in their golden age, do a double feature of Star 80 for Eric Roberts and Body Heat for Mickey Rourke.

tbd (Eazy), Thursday, 16 January 2014 04:22 (ten years ago) link

I love this movie.

Why all the reverence for wacky Fellini films?

I haven't seen this, unfortunately Cabaret is about the only Fosse screened on UK TV.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 16 January 2014 10:17 (ten years ago) link

In my case, because most of them are better than All That Jazz.

Only in a movie about Broadway in '79 would that number be "shocking."

(In '79, anyway)

three months pass...

DON: We were fans of Cabaret, an extraordinarily accurate picture of Weimar-era Berlin -- well, I was. We met Bob the first time we played Madison Square Garden. A flamboyant, crazy, tremendously charismatic guy.

GLENN: Henley and I wondered what kind of "divine decadence" we could learn from 1920s Berlin!

DON: Well, yeah.

They were later pissed that Fosse went with "Bye Bye Love" instead of "The Disco Strangler" for the climax of ATJ.

Damnit Janet Weiss & The Riot Grrriel (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 15 May 2014 23:04 (ten years ago) link

Blank Check recently did a series unpacking all of Fosse's films.

Lin Manuel-Miranda guests on the ATJ one, some great moments are drawn from Fosse's first draft of the script that Sam Rockwell sent to Miranda, w/ no name changes and some juicy details.
