Hoping this shitstorm means this dude is curtailed, if not officially declared OVER. The Guardian have it on page 3 today so maybe the magazines here will take note?

My own mag has a shoot with him in the current issue. As I mention upthread, I know the guy to say Hi to and that's never been unpleasant, but I've never liked his work. There are plenty of people in my field with power who don't either, but unfortunately I don't make commissioning decisions about what photographers we use (unless I've generated the feature in question). I will, however, ask the big boss if he plans to carry on using the man's work. I would imagine he might be embarrassed enough to drop his contribution; we regularly refuse to cover people the grapevine tells us are junkies or whatever.
It is difficult to stand up to behaviour like this from the editorial side of things, because in fashion magazines the *worst* thing to be in your office is the "worthy" one. Insisting on female agency or holding feminist views is seen as evidence that you're not cool, or you're reaching for those views because you're not pretty. Part of that is the tougher-than-thou atmosphere in a fashion industry workplace (anything to sideline a competitor is OK, if the losing party were tougher, they would not be a loser, yada yada).

I thought it was already pretty obvious that this dude is a total perv (and a total hack). If this means I never have to hear of him/see his work ever again, then there may be hope in the world yet.
― ●●●●●●●● (EDB), Saturday, 20 March 2010 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link
And yes, it is pretty disgusting how these dudes get off on delusions of sexual omnipotence and license, and are so willing to totally abuse it. He and Dov Charney should be forced to fight to the death.
― ●●●●●●●● (EDB), Saturday, 20 March 2010 14:31 (fourteen years ago) link
Well, yeah. I should also note that a lot of people in fashion that you wouldn't expect to defend the status quo are in this case trying to do so, and in 'she would say that' terms.

I can't think of this guy without remembering this anecdote I read about his dad:http://www.metafilter.com/82291/Sara-Ziff-talks-to-Louise-France-about-the-world-of-teen-modelling#2597914
Being a perv, recognized as such, and people dealing with your work I'm ok with. Using your position to exploit others, especially with young women, kids, or anyone else on the weak end of a power relationship, not so much. Ugh.

i mean, TR has been doing this for YEARS and it's not really a secret; my honest to god question is why people suddenly notice/are scolding NOW. Not saying he doesn't deserve the criticisim, but it strikes me as a total Maison Derriere thing of feigned shock...

― max, Saturday, 20 March 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link
People were given to believe that the most objectionable scenes were consensual, at least according to Richardson, and with no models coming forward to contradict him until now, he was taken at his word. There was a tussle with Hiromix over her image in something but that's been forgotten, if not buried.
Actually, I've never been a fan of the work but it's hard changing minds at work when people who are not from a dysfunctional, artistic background totally buy into all the shitty narcissistic bullshit that goes with it and pretty much reward bad behaviour in the anticipation that someday, they'll be the cosseted one for some other reason. You also have to appreciate that it's very difficult to act on the basis of what your boss will call hearsay. BTW hearsay is also reason for the same boss to come down hard on someone on another occasion, but it becomes accepted truth if authority says so.
For coercion like this to become a story at all you've got to have three people come on the record over a short time. JTM, 'scold' is a weird choice of words considering as a noun, it means a woman who is criminally quarrelsome in public.

I've never heard scold used as a noun, seems archaic.
― mh, Saturday, 20 March 2010 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link
It's not just Terry though, there are plenty of noted photographers who are given far too much leeway at photoshoots. It's not that the girls are all niave but rather that they are pressured into shooting in ways that either they didn't agree to beforehand (which is something that happens far too regularly) but also that there are sometimes images they are uncomfortable with after but can't do anything about because their agency/management are more interested in working with a high profile person. There needs to be tougher regulation of these photoshoots and better treatment of the models and if more girls come forward about Terry and expose the conditions these models work in then the industry might be forced to make some long needed changes.

alongside richardson's reprehensible personal behaviour he needs urgently to be hauled before some aesthetic tribunal for heinous crimes against art. have you guys seen his pirelli calendar? his vogue calendar? they are appalling - just totally worthless. and what material to work with, as well...

in general he is really tied up with that "celebrity photography art" genre which while contributing nothing of any great value to the world, no doubt has its serious talents.
― Jesse James Woods (darraghmac), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 14:51 (fourteen years ago) link
i don't know how to judge this stuff tbh. never read upscale magazines. probably old-fashioned enough not to call photoshoots of actresses "art" unless they're s.thing really special and i can't think of an example. i'd call a good one "good" though, and TR's thing is just sexie ladies looking sexie/a bit edgy. i've not been minded to seek out pix of tel with his nob out though.

I like his 'aesthetic' (aforementioned white wall, onboard camera flash, vignetting) which creates these really flat images, but the pervo content is a bit much and too vice mag
