Canada Day London
Whimiscally have decided to attend this event.
Anyone ever been to the Maple Leaf near Covent Garden? The only Canadian pub I know of in London.

why is canada day london tomorrow and not on the 1st? that makes no sense either but they will have street hockey, which makes sense i bet the poutine and beer situation will be merely mediocre :/
― rrrobyn, Friday, 29 June 2007 04:26 (sixteen years ago) link
they have blue and some other stuff on tap. canadian, i guess, maybe keiths. v expensive, of course.

yeah i figured. not so good. i know it shouldn't bother me but being represented overseas by total lameasses is kind of annoying.
also i like how when i load this thread the images at the top don't work but instead the thread kind of vibrates spastically for a second. reminds me of old-noise

I was in London for Canada Day last year. It was the same day as the Gay pride celebrations, and England's World Cup loss to Portugal. There were England flags, Maple Leafs and pink Union Jacks everywhere. The Maple Leaf pub in Covent Garden was too full, so I didn't bother going in.
This year, I'll be in Nagoya, Japan. Just heading down to a local bar owned by a Canadian with a couple of fellow ex-pats. Gonna get drunk on overpriced, imported Labatt Blue and reminisce about home.
I haven't been home for Canada day since 2000. I hope I'm back next year.

When I was younger I always plotted to get away to Canada for July 4th. Not just for the jazz festival.
When I finally made it, though, it was over (U.S.) Thanksgiving, which is one of the holidays I like most.
I am thinking about coming up to Montreal this summer, but not for July 4th or July 1st.
― Casuistry, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:09 (sixteen years ago) link
i've also been to the london canada day parties. good times. maiden lane is absolutely jammed full of people - lots of flags, hockey jerseys and general drunkenness. i was surprised how many ex-pats were around. and getting into the maple leaf pub itself is nearly impossible. just party in the street!
now that i'm back in toronto i'll probably watch fireworks from ontario place. wooo!
― Rob Bolton, Friday, 29 June 2007 13:49 (sixteen years ago) link
oh, the maple leaf pub's main beer (from what i recall) is moosehead, which isn't great, but a lot better than blue!

Went to two shindigs and saw two of my favourite Canadian bands- the Evaporators and Big Evil. Also ate poutine and later a slurpee from the 7-11. Feeling pretty satisfied I must say.

my IG stories are all reposts about not celebrating Canada Day and instead reflecting on this country's colonial past/present and while their hearts are in the right place, etc., it also seems like a competition to see who can do the least

I’ve got the same with a good chunk of my friends. “I can’t/won’t celebrate… yadda yadda”. And while I’m totally down with the sentiment and the cause - I can’t remember a time where I’ve been more relived I live here and can call myself a Canadian.

Only lived here a few months but that there is any kind of reflection on indigenous peoples at all let alone on the national holiday is impressive(?) for me, a dumb American. Not sure what all that reflecting will amount to but it’s marginally better than south of the border.
Anyhow saw a Every Child Matters protest on my way back from a ride along Queen’s Quay and folks seemed very supportive of it except - surprise - one loud older white fella who was shouting at them to get out of the street. At first I was uhh is this some all lives matter shit wtf but then put it together.

This is by far the shittiest Canada Day I've seen in Ottawa. Because convoy, festivities (if we can still call them that) were moved to two locations, on either side of the river (i.e. on the Ontario side and Quebec side), with security all over downtown directing everyone as to where to go and how to go there. Once I got to Lebreton Flats park, there was a long line to pass through security checks, with signs indicating protocols including the maximum allowed size for flags or cardboard signs and permitted materials. We had to go through a full body scan and then once I got there, it mostly just seemed like a glorified food court, with stalls for Tim Hortons, Smoke's Poutine, Beavertails, etc. There were bands at scheduled times, though not when I went down. I got Beavertails (which I could get in the Market any day) and left. Also, for no discernible reason, "Up Where We Belong" was playing on a loop the entire time I was there, from when I got in line until I left.
What makes Canada Day fun is being able to freely wander around downtown to the various events, booths, performances, free museums, etc. Maybe there was some intel about a legitimate threat but this all seems excessive to me. I hate the convoy as much as anyone but they're hardly 9/11 or the October Crisis, at least so far.
