like kids stop believing in Santa at age 7 or 8, i really doubt some junior high girls thought some scary doge wanted them to kill
― troy na'vi (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link
Maybe they're making it up as part of an insanity defense.
― Treeship, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:41 (ten years ago) link
Is Whiney calling Treeship a pearl-clutcher sexist??
― 龜, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:44 (ten years ago) link
Yeah i agree, Whiney. I work as an assistant teacher at a middle school and the kids I've dealt with seem to live in reality, for the most part, and have a degree of critical thinking skills. But the prospect that these kids were actually that "out there" in their thinking is still disturbing. The police etc seem to be treating that as a possibility.
― Treeship, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:44 (ten years ago) link
Adults can get trapped inside their own heads and focus on something so much that it affects their perceptions of reality, so I don't see why it couldn't happen to a 12 year old.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:49 (ten years ago) link
how might these girls be different from other junior high girls
― mikelovestfu (wins), Thursday, 5 June 2014 16:51 (ten years ago) link
Beautiful creatures was one of the first things I thought of too even though it's different.

Also, God that's a great movie.
An article I read really made it sound like one of the two was definitely the leader and the other sort of went along with it not thinking it would really happen until it was too late.

Why is that site called creepypasta? Am I missing something? That's the least creepy name ever and it's been annoying me. Get a better site name, dorks.
― Airwrecka Bliptrap Blapmantis (ENBB), Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:08 (ten years ago) link
sad that i know this, but (deep breath)
i think on sites like 4chan easily copied blocks of text turn into memes ie "copypasta". since people post anonymously it was part of the joke? i think? like, you'd recognize the same story over and over again eventually.
a subgenre of these that were supposedly first-person accounts of horror type stuff were called creepypasta
then someone made a website for them?
ok look id really k

Copypasta is internet slang for any block of text that gets copied and pasted over and over again, typically disseminated by individuals through online discussion forums and social networking sites. Although it shares some characteristics with spam in the sense they’re both unsolicited (and often considered a nuisance), copypastas are mainly spread through human operators whereas the latter is automatically generated by electronic messaging systems.
Slenderman is a pretty good scary looking thing. My own son brought up 'slenders' about six months ago after binging on god knows what youtube videos about whatever stupid games. However, he has a good grasp on what's real and what isn't. I think a deeper investigation into these children's homelife, the importance of myth (there were a lot of creepy drawings posted to the dad's instagram, for instance) will be revealing.

That's far better than most. A thunderstorm is rolling in and I am sitting by an open window, so a cold breeze actually and factually ran up my neck as I was reading that, which definitely added to the experience.
