The Nazi swastika and other icons related to the white supremacist political ideal aren’t uncommon on this island. Last year, a man was photographed by local media dressed in full SS soldier uniform while attending an anti-homosexuality parade. my grandpa was from that town (as were many jews), but his family went to the US in 1915

ah OK, I was picturing some kind of complicated "hung with the reform crowd and now orthodox rabbi sez u need some conversion to orthodoxy" type thing. I dunno I make up weird stuff sometimes. Mo mikvah, mo better.

I had Taiwanese food on Christmas--beef with pea shoots, totally legit dish. Spouse had sesame chicken. Not legit but tasty.

FTR spouse and dayo have, in fact, dined at Fortune Cookie in Shanghai. I missed it because I was getting my hairs did :(

H invited our neighbors (two kids who are watched during the day by their Chinese grandmother) for an impromptu playdate after seeing the grandmother (who speaks virtually no English and cares for the kids) roaming the hallways in boredom. The grandmother went to her apartment and came back with an envelope with $20 in it for Chinese New Year. Are we supposed to give her/them something in return?

I mean if we just give THEM $20, doesn't that defeat the purpose? But if we give them more, it seems competitive and if we give less it seems cheap. So how does this work?

That's a good idea. Parents are really nice -- they've gotten our kids birthday gifts (and we did the same in return) even though we haven't really had the change to hang out.
