unless there's an element of metacommentary wherein 'real england' is itself a reaching for fictive 'real england' that falls woefully short, in which case the photos qualify but the tableaux do not

theyre not superior, contempt might lend them some prurient intrigue, they arent even that

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

same for the fuckboy with those blackpool fotos the other month

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

blackpool one had its moments but in general this sort of thing shd be discouraged

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

the esthetic bankruptcy of thinking this stuff is remotely interesting, oh look an old person in a fluorescent tracksuit eating some shit food totes random me thinks

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

well yeah. the blackpool one at least had some cute tonal juxtapositions & content. basing anything like this in shoreditch is end-of-days shit

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:03 (nine years ago) link

:D back on track

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:05 (nine years ago) link

seems like your threshold for 'cute tonal juxtapositions & content' is even lower than your threshold for 'deconstructive' when applied to para-pop music

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:05 (nine years ago) link

theyre all dreadfully processed too

same dougie wallace was the blackpool guy but you knew that right?

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

haha oh shit

even wastemen strike lucky sometimes? idk. i'm not invested in defending any of his work really, it's sub-vice-magazine voyeurism for the most part

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:08 (nine years ago) link

Any of you lot seen Finding Vivian Maier? Not the finest documentary and off topic but her photographs are exceptional and are more about obsessive curiosity rather than cheap, destitution art.

xelab, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:09 (nine years ago) link

that pic that nakh linked to is troubling tbh and not just cos it's come out looking like a fsol inner sleeve

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:14 (nine years ago) link

As much as the mad night out, Dougie also gets the morning after - specifically, the equally off-kilter, spontaneous street theatre of Brick Lane market. Is the girl striking a pose for a fashion shoot or just for the passers by? What, really, is the difference anyhow? These streets are one big fashion parade anyway. They feel like a slightly demented and off-kilter parallel reality, a pocket of weirdness and colour, the Ditch beyond the Roman wall of the City where all the tat and flotsam Shore up, the no-man’s-land where everything mad and messy collides: roll up, roll up, come and get your plastic pink flamingoes, two for the price of one!

Man, Blackpool as a whole is so Real England. Depressing, decaying seaside boulevards and bad tasting, fat fish and chips. And unemployment. And lad culture in full swing. That's what Real England is all about imho.

definite classic, predicting a solid 8/10 from the p-fork boys (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:51 (nine years ago) link

dont u have all of that shit in the netherlands

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:52 (nine years ago) link

We do. But then it's not Real England. Then it's Real Holland. Which is weak sauce compared to English Realness and how lovely depressed life can get.

Real England isn't about whether you have it at home. Real England is the epitome of depressing, decaying society and bricks and people. Battered and bruised and humiliating and forlorn. It couldn't be matched in Holland, and I say that with great envy.

(also, we don't have fish and chips in holland)

theres probably a sort of sentimental wallowing in grottiness in the northwest of england that isnt matched in the coastal towns i know

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:59 (nine years ago) link

not that ive spent a lot of time there but some of the south coast towns are violent and unpleasant and perhaps thrilling if thats your scene but not in a way that lends itself to sentimentality

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:01 (nine years ago) link

You're not looking hard enough iirc. The wallowing in grittiness is everywhere. From Kernow to Northumberland.

Xp

Grottiness even

im not looking at all, it could scarcely interest me less

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:03 (nine years ago) link

Fair dues, but it is of great importance to me. Real England is everywhere in England. You won't find it in Holland tbh

yeah i can see how it would have some romantic appeal to someone from abroad even if i am immune to it

the voyeurism is politically 'problematic' although that's not a reason to disavow it in itself

Contrappunto dialettico alla mente (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:12 (nine years ago) link

Nowt romantic about it. Rather, exotic? Hand on heart, the quesy grimness of Real England is unparalleled in the Netherlands, a country where everything is so meticulously prefabricated, modeled out, toned down, leveled. There does not exist a Real Netherlands. Which makes me appreciate Real England even more.

Real England manages, for better or for worse, to escape the choking clutch of planning and demographically lead ruling. This, however disastrous, I admire. It is terra incognito in most Western European countries,

amsterdam's red light district is perhaps the most real england place i've ever been. even though so much of the touristic persona is defined towards the terms of the english visitor they still manage to make a grotesquery of it.

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:38 (nine years ago) link

also iirc imago was initially unreservedly positive about the blackpool photoset

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:39 (nine years ago) link

thanet ive got some links to and its certainly nasty in a way that thug clive gets and probably confounds realness tourism, its a hard place and there are no daytripping factory workers from oldham there for a fight and a fuck all in good humour

the bourgie south of the english riviera also has an undercurrent of nastiness and serious criminality, dorset yacht clubs with spiritual links to south america

Went to a Tony Ray-Jones exhibition last year. I suppose that is what this guy is riffing off from.

Felt Ray-Jones quite liked the people and places he went to.

speaking of south coast brutality, just recalled business legernd nicholas van hoogstraten

was saying to nakh that his kind far transcend the more capital-based guvnors and manors novel. no compunction in evidence
