Santa Cruz is more or less equal in terms of northness as San Jose now, as San Jose has laid claim to a lot of unincorporated area south of its former boundaries.

places i have stayed for extended periods of time-
Norcal:S.F. - YES. A++ would visit again or live there. Palo Alto - mmmm ok. the weather was perfect. dug the trees. got to stay in a really nice place and i can remember a couple really good restaurants.San Jose - downright lame imo. (pretty much lived there for 4 months)
Socal: L.A. - totally dug it! for a few days, anyway! not sure i could live there...O.C. - hmm no thanks. ate breakfast at a place with an awes view somewhere around laguna beach, but otherwise meh.
