Really looking forward to 2050 when Anders Behring Breivik will be a 9/11 Era Legend telling mesmerising stories, followed by exotic dancers & full buffet.

PD James once complained to me abt the music I was playing in a bookshop (tbf, it was prob Merzbow or similar.)

You were playing Merzbow in a bookshop? I'm kinda impressed.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 November 2014 15:07 (nine years ago) link

This was part of the Music and Video Exchange 'empire' in Notting Hill Gate, and the barmy owner insisted we play music at all times so... Merzbow (PD James was Baroness James of Holland Park, which is just down the road from NHG).

never really got on with her books. ponderous tv stuff. An Unsuitable Job for a Woman great title and my mum assures me still her best (and first iirc).

might give her another go - bookcases when I was growing up were stuffed to the gills with her.

Right wing 'historian' Paul Johnson was another regular customer. He would always browse the art book shelves, on top of which perched one of our fairly sizeable speakers. I wld deliberately crank up the most horrible noise whenever Johnson stood under this speaker...but I never got so much as a murmur out of the fucker.

Last cpl of times I've been to the NH Book exchange it was Marque Moon and some Nick Cave so Merzbow sounds better already.

Bobby Keys died at his home in Nashville this morning from cirrhosis. He was 70.

Very very sad.

He had to sit out the most recent leg of the Stones tour due to illness. His stories about romancing Natalie Delon during the Exile sessions (told in Keef's book) are quite something.

Nathaniel Branden, lover and "intellectual heir" (what a gyp) of Ayn Rand

http://www.latimes.com/local/obituaries/la-me-nathaniel-branden-20141209-story.html

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 December 2014 18:26 (nine years ago) link

At an Objectivist lecture in the 1960s, someone asked if such heroes as Rand portrayed could exist in the real world. Yes, she replied, there were two in the room at that moment: She indicated Nathaniel Branden and herself. She had identified Branden as her "intellectual heir," authorized to speak on her behalf regarding all matters. By 1967, the Nathaniel Branden Institute was installed in the Empire State Building, where it occupied eight thousand square feet and had a long lease. And then, in the summer of 1968--at a moment in American history when radicalism, individualism, and cultural critique were undergoing many strange permutations--it all imploded.

In August, after a lengthy hiatus in their sexual relationship, Rand learned that Nathaniel had fallen in love with an Objectivist student (who later became an actress). Rand heard the news from Barbara, whose own relationship with Nathaniel, always shaky, had finally come undone. At a meeting in New York City five days later, Nathaniel announced that he had committed an unspecified but enormous transgression against Objectivism.

From the Ardent Studios FB page:

It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the loss of our beloved John Hampton. Ardent's very own mad scientist, Hampton joined the Ardent family in 1977 and quickly made a home for himself here. We all will forever be touched by his talent and the music he helped create. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
