Spoiler: there's a mime doing sign language.

I cannot imagine a universe where what that mime is doing is language

i didn't think it was so awkward, i like mooney's shtick
Was cracking up this week at how serious Kate & Aidy were on the "The Wishing Boot" song this week.
Michael Che seems to be settling into update pretty well. The Riblet bit with Bobby this week was great.

I've had that goddamn song stuck in my head for a couple of days now.

i don't think hosting SNL represents a financial windfall, or that a guy who did 4 Shrek movies needs one

He's not hosting afaik. He's just coming back for the anniversary special.

If you've enjoyed the show in the last 30, he deserves one for being the first proof anything can come of it after the first five

According to Uproxx, the last time Murphy set foot on the “SNL” stage was February 25, 1984, with host Edwin Newman and musical guest Kool & the Gang
Not true; Eddie hosted on December 15, 1984 (with musical guest Robert Plant and the Honeydrippers). Probably the best episode that season, with one of Eddie's (and SNL's) all-time career highlights, the "White Like Me" short film.

haha how do you make a short list of the biggest stars to come out of SNL and Al Franken and Jimmy Fallon are on it but not Will Ferrell, Chevy Chase, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, ::trails off::
― some dude, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:38 (nine years ago) link
Al Franken is probably the only competition Eddie has in terms of "importance" because he literally shapes American policy these days
― uncle banmee who can remember his live posts (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:39 (nine years ago) link
Jon Lovitz and Norm MacDonald are another couple of tethers that helped to barely hold the show together over chasms of near-cancellation.
― Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:41 (nine years ago) link
yeah i guess the word could mean that. i was just thinking in terms of Stuart Smalley's box office record. (xp)
― some dude, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:42 (nine years ago) link
lovitz yes but wasn't norm's biggest accomplishment behind-the-scenes pissing off don ohlemeyer?
― da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:43 (nine years ago) link
I just mean that he was one of the only holdovers when the the show was floundering and the cast was rebuilt from the ground up, and also arguably the main reason why a lot of people were still watching at that particular time.

purely in terms of popularity, i would guess that adam sandler has even murphy beat. and slightly below that level, there's will ferrell.

yeah but they also kept david spade and mark mckinney, and i don't know what the argument is that norm is the reason many people stayed - dude was not america's sweetheart
people i'd consider important to the show's survival
chevy chase - first breakout starjohn belushi - first america's sweetheartbill murray - first breakout star not from original casteddie murphy - only breakout star of the lorneless periodjon lovitz - only guy from 85 anyone likedmike myers - got the kids into itadam sandler - ran with that kids ball something fierecewill ferrell - first breakout star after the show resurrected from kids ball helltina fey - possibly more important as a head-writer, but largely erased kids ball from the showandy samberg - viral pioneer
― da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 17:50 (nine years ago) link
bill murray might be the SNL alum with the longest period of relevance, no?
― I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:52 (nine years ago) link
Don't know how long it's been since you've seen the 93-94 or 94-95 seasons, but that last stretch with the previous cast is largely dire and the new cast were slow growers. Spade was only doing his little Snark Talk segment during his last season and McKinney wasn't much of a draw. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that Weekend Update was the diamond in that rough patch at least until Ferrell, Shannon, et al built up a decent head of steam.
― Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 17:59 (nine years ago) link
i'm not saying norm wasn't good and doesn't have his fans, i've just never heard any commentary from the snl folks along the lines of "thank god we had norm mcdonald"
― da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:00 (nine years ago) link
where lovitz gets a lot of praise for being a glimmer of hope
― da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:01 (nine years ago) link
i think you're conflating "norm was the only reason i was watching" with "norm was the only reason the network didn't cancel it"
― da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:02 (nine years ago) link
Well, the former is certainly true, but while I wouldn't say the latter is explicitly true, they sure didn't have much else going on for about a year there.

phil hartman biggest SNL mvp
― LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:08 (nine years ago) link
He might still be my favorite performer overall but he unfortunately didn't make much of a splash outside of the show. I'm so glad he went out still doing quality work on Newsradio and The Simpsons, though.
― Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:10 (nine years ago) link
of those kept along with macdonald, spade (who negotiated to do less and then quit - they happily would have let him do more) and mckinney, molly shannon had already started and tim meadows had been on the show for several years. in 1986-1987 they kept lovitz, dunn and dennis miller - lovitz having earned an emmy nomination.
― da croupier, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:13 (nine years ago) link
i don't know if it's just my complete lack of nostalgia for the early-mid 1990s (which surely has less to do with the "inherent" qualities of that decade and more to do with my having been a teenager at the time) but i think about SNL of that period and just think of the worst aspects of many of those actors' schticks.
― I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:15 (nine years ago) link
imo there's no question that the peak era is the hartman/lovitz/nealon/dunn/hooks/jackson/miller/myers era. the cast immediately after is pretty strong too, but a definite step down.
― LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:19 (nine years ago) link
Yeah, I don't think that cast has been or is ever likely to be topped.
― Runny Trumpet (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:19 (nine years ago) link
the 1985-86 season ended with the cast being stuck in a fire and lorne only saving jon lovitz, in the mid-90s, that would have been david spade, not norm. after all, dennis miller survived the fire too.
86-90 era is my favorite too, though i mostly experienced it through hour-long re-runs on comedy central as a teenager, which is probably the best way to see snl
