We don't even have Shamrock Shakes down here.
It is kinda nice, tbh.

Shamrock Shakes..? Is that some kind of euphemism for delirium tremens or what?

Hey, darraghmac, anyone wearing orange in of your parades today?

the green, orange, and white of the flag is meant to symbolise peace between the Catholic and Protestant sides

There are people in the U.S. who will get angry if someone wears orange to a St. Patrick's Day celebration (or on St. Patrick's Day). Is that an example of Americans shooting for authenticity and missing?

I think so. I'm not gonna say definitively.
if they'd a sash, a bowler hat or a lambeg drum OTOH they've got it coming to em.

I just misunderstood. I did a book report on troubles 25 years ago, and all I remember is that any good Irish Catholic should hate marmalade.

St Patrick's Day is on the 17th march
God Americans suck at being Irish but they won't stop trying

I have heard tell of other countries copying the Americanized celebration of St. Patrick's Day, complete with liquor and beer-branded merchandise and wearing novelty sparkly green top hats. Eventually it will be the canonical version. I mean, the population of Chicago is half the population of Ireland, and it's hardly the only city with stupid merchandising.
This whole line of thought is giving me a flashback to a UK-themed bar I went to last year. It was actually more like someone had gone to a UK-themed pub in the US, and then made an "American UK-themed pub"-themed bar.

iirc I grew up a lot further south of the border than you, and people wearing orange on Paddy's day would definitely be seen to be trying to be ~smart.
online I've only read Americans saying "OH I'M GOING TO WEAR ORANGE LOL", knowing what the symbolism is, so I'm inclined to think "twats", generally.

ppl in the pic above don't seem to be of that ilk, like they've just thrown it in as part of the complete tricolour :D

I went to a "British pub" in San Diego that I count among the worst drinking experiences I've ever had

I almost don't blame the places - there's a local chain of 'pubs' (sports bars where you can watch soccer) called The Londoner that everyone talks about as being Irish... despite being named The Londoner.

ya gyac you'd rly need to judge it case by case I'd say
donegal town had a large COI community, well integrated AFAIK, but even so I dont remember from my time there whether it was a big colour in the parade
but its on a few of the bands on the island definitely. possibly too far removed to have a sting associated there, idk. worth a read up perhaps

Wrigleyville has been a complete shitshow when I was there early in the night on a random weekend, I can only imagine the hell on earth that descends on St. Patrick's Day

didn't go north of 14th Street in NYC, but i don't get the green Mardi Gras beads shit; poor repurposing.
Did see a guy in a green t shirt pissing next to a real-estate office basement in the West Village, so the holiday was official.
