on Lanthimos... "A classically styled, science fiction-inspired oddity that recalls both François Truffaut‘s Fahrenheit 451 and the ’60s British TV show The Prisoner in its sobre magical realist tone and acute observations concerning the human condition.” (Adam Woodward)

The slate's frontloaded with the weird this year.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:53 (nine years ago) link

Def a little more excited for Lobster than Tale of Tales tho.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:54 (nine years ago) link

And could not be less excited for Gaspar Noe's latest.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:54 (nine years ago) link

enjoyed Manohla Dargis' passing ref to X Dolan today as "Canadian brat-auteur"

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 May 2015 18:54 (nine years ago) link

should be brateur, no?

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 15 May 2015 19:15 (nine years ago) link

i think you would serve that with poutine.

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 May 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

are you a Donaliste Morbs?

Van Horn Street, Friday, 15 May 2015 19:46 (nine years ago) link

Can't stand his films, or the person himself for that matter. But hey i'm a young montreal filmmaker so I guess it's jealousy.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 15 May 2015 19:47 (nine years ago) link

apparently there has been some booing at Gus van Sant's press projection. i don't know what drives a person to boo a film this way but whatever, the Cannes tradition must live.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 15 May 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

a Dolaniste? no, i think a couple of his films are OK but these last two were slappable.

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 May 2015 19:54 (nine years ago) link

Dolan = brauteur, Noe = broteur

the new Lanthimos sounds p ideal to me

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Saturday, 16 May 2015 16:59 (nine years ago) link

Yes.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Saturday, 16 May 2015 18:39 (nine years ago) link

So apparently jumping on Naomi Kawase is def a Cannes meme now.

http://www.indiewire.com/article/why-does-the-cannes-film-festival-keep-programming-naomi-kawases-movies-20150517

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 18 May 2015 18:18 (nine years ago) link

Still the Water was bad, but I don't get what makes her significantly worse than recent Kore-eda, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa has another in competition as well despite Real being one of the craziest awful films I've ever seen.

Frederik B, Monday, 18 May 2015 19:07 (nine years ago) link

In non-award Cannes news, Tom Ford's second movie is getting set up:

... (Eazy), Monday, 18 May 2015 21:32 (nine years ago) link

So this poll is closing after the awards are announced afaict. Bookies in London say Lobster is the frontrunner atm, but they have Gus Van Sant in something other than last place so.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 14:15 (nine years ago) link

Noe's getting pretty tepid reviews.

Good.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 May 2015 12:54 (nine years ago) link

Yeah. And The Assassin is getting raves. Hou for the win.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 May 2015 13:24 (nine years ago) link

Didn't realize he's never won. Yes, him for the win.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 May 2015 13:30 (nine years ago) link

(Seven at-bats!)

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 May 2015 13:32 (nine years ago) link

He has won the lion, so he's not completely without wins, but his film seems awesome and also the one that needs palm-boost the most.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 May 2015 13:34 (nine years ago) link

so far it would seem to be btwn Hou, Lanthimos and Haynes.

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Thursday, 21 May 2015 14:00 (nine years ago) link

there was a lot of love for the Nemes too tho so idk

fuck me, archipelago (Simon H.), Thursday, 21 May 2015 14:01 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, one of those four, I think. Nemes seems really cool as well, but he already has Danish distribution, so selfishly, I want something else to win...

But hey, watch the Coen's hand the palm to Villeneuve, or something silly like that.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 May 2015 14:04 (nine years ago) link

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/love-cannes-review-797320

Indeed, by Noe's standards, especially compared to his last Enter the Void, Love is pretty innocuous, hardly shocking at all. This may seem like a surprising thing to say about a movie that features a tight close-up of a penis ejaculating into 3-D space at its audience.

can't wait to see this film with my mother

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 21 May 2015 20:04 (nine years ago) link

Son of Saul looks incredible. I'll choose that as the winner. Favourable comparisons with Klimov's Come and See which is possibly my favourite film of all time.

Miguel Gomes' new one sounds like absolutely amazing. 6 hours, collection of vignettes, both fictional and documentary, in 35mm and 16mm, filmed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul's cinematographer. Can't wait to see it.

Frederik B, Saturday, 23 May 2015 00:03 (nine years ago) link

yeah, that's the one (aside from the hou) that i am most curious about.

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Saturday, 23 May 2015 03:57 (nine years ago) link

I'd never make it thru.

Norse Jung (Eric H.), Saturday, 23 May 2015 06:05 (nine years ago) link

Get 1x break after 3 hours or so.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 23 May 2015 08:50 (nine years ago) link

The first awards are in. I really don't understand what is going on in Director's Forthnight or Critic's Week (is the Nespresso prize more prestigious than the Canal+ prize?) but here's what won in Un Certain Regard:

Un Certain Regard Award – Rams by Grímur Hákonarson
Un Certain Regard Jury Prize – The High Sun by Dalibor Matanić
Un Certain Regard Award for Best Director – Kiyoshi Kurosawa for Journey to the Shore
Prix Un Certain Talent – The Treasure by Corneliu Porumboiu
Un Certain Regard Special Prize for Promising Future:
Nahid by Ida Panahandeh
Masaan by Neeraj Ghaywan

Iceland for the win, there. A bit of Danish money involved, so the media here is acting like we won it. Iceland is kinda winning a lot at the moment, Benedikt Erlingson's very good Of Horses and Men won the Nordic Film Prize last year, and Dagur Kari's Virgin Mountain won three prizes in Tribeca last month.

Frederik B, Saturday, 23 May 2015 22:01 (nine years ago) link

Nothing for Joe.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Saturday, 23 May 2015 22:30 (nine years ago) link

Well, he won UCR in 2002, and has won Jury Prize and Golden Palm in competition. I can understand if jury wanted to award someone new. Except that Kiyoshi Kurosawa has also won a lot of prizes, and his latest films have been pretty horribly looking, so especially a directing award seems odd. An interesting sign.

Frederik B, Saturday, 23 May 2015 23:01 (nine years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 24 May 2015 00:01 (nine years ago) link

Oh I'm not saying joe should have won anything. I've not seen the films, after all. I'm just noting the fact.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Sunday, 24 May 2015 04:40 (nine years ago) link

With regard to Carol my problem
Is that I feel like I've already seen the film, will know exactly how it will pan out before I've even seen it. I mean I know this is daft but I say this as a huge Todd Haynes fan.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Sunday, 24 May 2015 04:46 (nine years ago) link

i just read the book, and he has to pull some surprises

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 24 May 2015 07:50 (nine years ago) link

Especially since a lot of people are going for the 'lifetime achievement' angle considering apparently it's far from Audiard's best.

seems cool that nic jaar did the score
