also re stannis, why'd they rush out to confirm that kit isn't going to be in the next season, that jon is 100% for sure dead, and then not discuss stannis. i'm telling u it's very suspicious he is still alive i believe stannis 4eva.

After learning a few more spoilers today (nothing massive but I probably shouldn't have read Arya's wiki entry) I realise it really isn't safe for me even though I already knew some other bigger spoilers that haven't been on the tv show.

he gets sent elsewhere in the books and gets "entrusted" with another mission. pretty sure Davos will return next season.

xxp - do you think that at the moment Brienne is gonna kill stannis, sansa and theon appear and disrupt the execution?

no but i think brienne is not exactly trustworthy to carry out a cold-blooded execution

They should have somehow engineered it so that Sansa and Theon land on her as she's about to land the final blow.

i do wonder about the possibility of characters being brought back because that whole deal in season 3 w/beric and his crew would be a really, really odd side story to not bring back. i assume in the books it was used as a tablesetter for lady stoneheart?

Book SPOILER: Most of book four especially takes place in the Riverlands, in the region most harmed by the War of Kings, and while Beric and crew doesn't play a big role, they loom heavily over the proceedings. Show has removed all those stories, thereby also removing the most potent thematic layer in the whole series, kinda.

"oh, you're dead too?"'well, I might be reincarnated as a wolf, not sure yet"
It was honestly really weird that they didn't show Stannis dying, not least since they showed his moral downfall in such detail.
― bureau belfast model (LocalGarda), Monday, 15 June 2015 20:50 (eight years ago) link
Ok I can buy that Stannis telling Brienne to "Do you duty" reminded her of her duty to protect Sansa. And that she decides to keep Stannis alive to trade him for Sansa.

Or, they just decided to choose the POV angle for his death blow? Is that so ridiculous? Why all the denial?

Stannis sent off to recuperate with The Hound and Benjen Stark and Catelyn's uncle and gendry. Can't wait for that B-team to step up in season 8.

nb it could very well be that this is another one of GOT's genre defying moments just to screw with the audience, but any genre savvy watcher/reader is going to skeptical of a death that isn't shown

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i guess i could break down exactly why stannis dying here is different than robert dying in season one (i can think of like four reasons off the top of my head) but if you don't get the feeling that the quick camera break away was concealing some narrative trickery than i'm probably not going to convince you
― Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:05 (eight years ago) link
Didn't King Robert have a funeral with the body there?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:06 (eight years ago) link
I don't get that feeling here. It's pretty conclusive story-wise for Stannis. The tragedy of the ultimate sacrifice of his army and his daughter and his wife not playing out, and then the one principal he holds above everything (duty) being the reason he dies, it all closes his chapter very nicely.

i was so disappointed in dorne this season. I was hoping dr bashir would be getting an army or doing something actually interesting but he just wound up a dornish patsy while the sand snakes lamely conspired behind his back to kill teenage girl.

yeah i don't know if i agree w/ that at all. i think it's certainly possible that Stannis is dead, but if he is it represents yet another tremendous anti-climax to a narrative that was developed over the course of a number of seasons. xxp
― Mordy, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:10 (eight years ago) link
Not saying it was very climactic, just that I don't see them dragging his story out any further. Nothing about Brienne's motivations cues to me that there would be any incentive for her to not kill him.
― Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:12 (eight years ago) link
They rushed his downfall which is why it felt like a throwaway imo
― Evan, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:14 (eight years ago) link
i don't think it felt rushed, it felt like the appropriately banal and inevitable end to his megalomaniacal crusade
― Merdeyeux, Monday, 15 June 2015 21:18 (eight years ago) link
Pretty much every character in this series in thrall to hubris, which is why they inevitably have some horrible fate/setback befall them. I don't see why Stannis would be an exception, particularly after burning his daughter alive.
