Rublev's temperament is...also a thing. Not necessarily a weakness but not always edifying either.

Dunno how much of this week I'll catch, on a press trip in Toronto

cerealbar, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 20:24 (eight years ago) link

wow serena takes the set in the tiebreak 7-5 on a forehand off the tape that just catches the line

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 20:31 (eight years ago) link

bertens needs to continue to just get everything back and see what happens, serenas not playing v well

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 20:32 (eight years ago) link

Pretty wild how, despite his leg not working toward the end, Mardy able to position himself early so well and rip crazy winners. Sorry to see him go. One of the good ones, as they say. Go rip em up on the PowerShares Tour, dude!

fognini seems much more interested in blasting low-percentage winners than he does winning this match, but it's pretty entertaining nonetheless

super sick break just there

johnny crunch, Saturday, 5 September 2015 04:15 (eight years ago) link

that point just there where he stood inside the baseline and ripped 3 straight 100 mph backhands without moving his feet was hilarious

this strikes me as the natural progression tho when 2 clay ct players meet on hard court and its best of 5

saw the first set-and-a-half before falling asleep, felt a lot like the Wim final. Commentators fawning over Federer's surprise returns making me cringe now, can't even bring myself to acknowledge their name for it and knew that it wouldn't be successful against Djokovic a second time - it's a mental tactic more than anything else. Awesome year for Novak, feels routine at this point. RG is the question now...

lex pretend, Monday, 14 September 2015 08:19 (eight years ago) link

I saw three sets and went to bed at 3am. I am thanking the gods for the existence of coffee..

It was closer than Wimbledon and the 'surprise return' was deployed every now and then - it did seem to seed bits of doubt in Djokovic. Overall it was quite a thing to see in a slam final, from someone like Federer who is thought as the height of elegance. He'll do what it takes, and we all know that.

Overall though it was a brilliant match - the way D answered some of that stuff from Fed (those remarkable back-to-back lobs), the 20-shot game where Novak held on for dear life and really was under the cosh for most of the 3rd set before - really almost out of nowhere - turning around with some magnificent tennis to break Fed's serve. Knew the game was up at the end of that.

Only criticism of Fed is he didn't seem to carry those kinds of tactics in the 1st set.

But its stil head-scratching how he can keep defying his age (all the questionable strength of the tour aside) and doing all of this. Maybe 35 year old slam champions will be the norm in 20 years.

Also I bet Boris Becker still has awesome thighs.

um hello thats why hes a celebrity

Having congratulated myself at getting the kids to bed by 9:40, the rain delay totally ruined any chances I had of streaming this so I was left with fitful dreams in which Federer went 6-1 6-3 up, only to wreck his ankle stepping on a stray ball. Woke at 1:45am to see (through my ScoreFlash phone app only - no video) that Fed was still capable of walking, but actually a set down. Woke again around 3:15 to see Djokovic go a double-break up in set 4. Drifted in and out of sleep as Fed mounted his comeback. If he'd taken any of the bps in the last game I may well have sat up and tried to find a stream on the laptop, sleep be damned.

Looking fwd to the roof next year - though the USTA will probably go with 8pm local Monday night or something idiotic for the men's final.
