deadline is too early

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Monday, 15 February 2016 14:58 (eight years ago) link

It should preferably be in 2020, but, well, other than that I don't think a week or two will change a lot.

Frederik B, Monday, 15 February 2016 15:30 (eight years ago) link

I translated my review of Amour Fou, if anyone is interested in why I think it's the best film of 2015. Couldn't be arsed to do spellcheck, sorry, it took a stupid amount of time to remember how to work in blogspot. http://centrifugue.blogspot.com/2016/02/amour-fou.html

re Amour Fou: I've never seen you proselytize so intensely for a film before.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 22 February 2016 14:08 (eight years ago) link

nevvvver? It's just a reaction against eternal teenagerism in moviegoing on the board, perhaps.

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Monday, 22 February 2016 15:39 (eight years ago) link

anyway, to come this week: The Duke of Burgundy, The New Girlfriend, perhaps Experimenter, a rewatch of The Look of Silence.

Thanks Alfred!

I hope there's a last minute rush this weekend. Pretty low on ballots. Everyone thoughtfully put in a ballot based on the dozens of films you saw last year!

(or just throw something together but don't tell Morbs)

I'll vote this weekend. I just have a couple more to see!

Against my better judgment I'll probably send in a top 10 over the weekend.

Mars Capone (WilliamC), Thursday, 25 February 2016 18:54 (eight years ago) link

if i had watched more than ~3 movies from 2015 (one of which was ridiculous 6, yikes) i would totally send a ballot but alas :( looking fwd to ilx's results tho!

Worth Taking from Little Kid (Will M.), Thursday, 25 February 2016 18:54 (eight years ago) link

ok i voted

johnny crunch, Friday, 26 February 2016 22:58 (eight years ago) link

I managed to see a decent count of the year's films, but still have a longlist of 45 I'd like to see before this poll ends... If I manage 6, I guess I can be happy with that. Sadly, I don't think Arabian Nights is going to be one of them unless I've watched say, 10 films by 3pm tomorrow. Here goes...

tangenttangent, Saturday, 27 February 2016 09:26 (eight years ago) link

I only saw 22 movies from 2015, all from the US or UK. I sent in my top 5.

remove butt (abanana), Saturday, 27 February 2016 10:18 (eight years ago) link

Missed a showing of Bone Tomahawk this week, who knows what difference that will have made. Anyway, voted.

ewar woowar (or something), Saturday, 27 February 2016 12:07 (eight years ago) link

Altered ballot resubmitted, sorry.

ewar woowar (or something), Saturday, 27 February 2016 12:11 (eight years ago) link

Not qualified to vote in this, due to my lack of appreciation for The Great Man and my vast appreciation of Mad Max, but I'll be rooting for Mustang & Amour Fou & Tangerine. Prolly would have thrown some points to Hard To Be A God and Taxi, neither of which was perfect, but I would sit and rewatch over a lot of stuff I theoretically rated higher at the time. Oh and Phoenix, which to me is a minor Petzold but I genuinely think he is the best director working today. Prolly forgetting a bunch of good stuff, but it's the things that stay with you that you should rate, yeah?

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Saturday, 27 February 2016 13:15 (eight years ago) link

Ach, changed my mind, sent a top eleven off the top of my head SPOILER Bridge Of Spies ain't on it

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Saturday, 27 February 2016 13:23 (eight years ago) link

Oh, this is that thread

I see a lot of films but as with the ilm poll I just don't have my shit together enough atm to do this. What even came out last year? Inside out, tangerine, horse money... Idk maybe I saw more repertory/MUBI stuff in 2015. I will check the rollout tho & root for not-star-wars

anglos with derpy phasis (wins), Saturday, 27 February 2016 16:00 (eight years ago) link

Voted ā€“ just a baker's dozen, not every new thing I saw last year.

WilliamC, Saturday, 27 February 2016 16:33 (eight years ago) link

Wins, if you saw Horse Money, you should definitely vote!

Cherish, Saturday, 27 February 2016 17:17 (eight years ago) link

The two I most regret missing: Arabian Nights and Heart of a Dog. Still, I did pretty well this year, saw almost everything I was excited about.

Iā€™m going to watch a couple more today, then vote.

Cherish, Saturday, 27 February 2016 17:18 (eight years ago) link

one of my regrets of last year was not staying for the Q&A after horse money - my friend didn't want to stay and we were both hungry and in need of refreshment - but I loved it. Never seen any costa before but I ended up seeing it twice at the cinema which I hardly ever do. Other regrets of last year: same as you! And missing amour fou, which did actually play here unlike HOAD and AN

I thought the deadline had already passed! This is what I mean about not having my shit together. I will try to make a ballot then

anglos with derpy phasis (wins), Saturday, 27 February 2016 17:32 (eight years ago) link

Dammit forgot to stick Room somewhere on my ballot. That probably deserves something.

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Saturday, 27 February 2016 21:52 (eight years ago) link

Really? It seemed ghastly from the trailer.

I watched amour fou! It is really, really good. Still digesting but it will prob make my ballot if I vote.

anglos with derpy phasis (wins), Saturday, 27 February 2016 22:09 (eight years ago) link

Room was much better than its trailer (largely on the strength of the performances), and though it won't reckon in the higher reaches of my ballot I'd still say it's worth seeing for the experience.

We just finished watching Amour Fou! It was uncannily sensitive...and I liked how such opulence could be made to feel so stagnant and claustrophobic. It was like a muted rollercoaster. Very funny too.

Have managed five today. Must watch Horse Money, Inside Out and The Wonders before voting. I'd like to include Mustang, but there's no way of me viewing it as a 2015 release being that it's only just surfacing in UK cinemas now.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 27 February 2016 22:47 (eight years ago) link

JHM: you can still resubmit. Not counting until they're all in.

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Saturday, 27 February 2016 22:49 (eight years ago) link

Does Arabian Nights count as one? Please let it count as one.

Looking at the films I haven't seen. I'm bad at this. Oscar-bait. Does Hard to be a God even count? It's from 2013. Oh well. Please vote for Amour Fou, everyone!

Frederik B, Sunday, 28 February 2016 00:27 (eight years ago) link

three weeks pass...

holy fucken shit @ Arabian Nights pt 1, it is absolutely incredible, made me laugh and cry uncontrollably, and it's just the first goddamn third of the movie

cannot wait for the other two. felt more legitimately close to the spirit of bunuel than anything else i've seen recently

And the cry rang out all o'er the town / Good Heavens! Tay is down (imago), Sunday, 24 April 2016 22:42 (eight years ago) link

glad

i will withhold potential buzzkill....

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 April 2016 01:46 (eight years ago) link

It gets even better in part 2 and especially 3 :)

Frederik B, Monday, 25 April 2016 07:55 (eight years ago) link

First part is easily the best, the mock fantasy trial sequence in 2 and all the bird-singing stuff in 3 were pretty patience-testing, imho

Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Monday, 25 April 2016 08:00 (eight years ago) link

This reminded me mostly of Bamako (the trial of the Cockerel), bits of Xala and Salo (troika and negotiators and traitors by the big house in the sea with young women and erections around).

Troika is probably too raw and Gomes hasn't managed to cohere this into anything. The director's cameo and remarks were pathetic. Towards the end the doc bits turned out fine although the eloquently put testimony was surrounded by junk. Wasn't convinced for a second he wasn't trying to adapt Arabian Nights, it looked like he gave up and made up excuses. Only if he had relaxed about it.
