I guess you're not a lifeguard so you don't see the potential danger here

assawoman bay (harbl), Tuesday, 21 June 2016 11:17 (seven years ago) link

The hot topic right now is continuing to mourn the already now-closed Barnes & Noble and complain about the Target soon to replace it (sort of a mini-Target or Target Express or something).

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 03:34 (seven years ago) link

Shoshanna ____ this community desperately wanted B&N to stay. Petitions were filed. Pleas made. Our B&N was a place to browse, hear stories, linger. To gather as a community.

Evan G____ [to particular poster] if you don't understand that reading and lifelong learning is essential I hope you're teaching your kid(s) more than just materialism/consumerism.

6 god none the richer (m bison), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 03:57 (seven years ago) link

lol my neighborhood facebook group wouldn't want a B&N or Target. Just more parking.

Jeff, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 09:28 (seven years ago) link

they can linger in target now

assawoman bay (harbl), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 10:54 (seven years ago) link

Nothing consumerist about a B&N no sir!

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:05 (seven years ago) link

Reminds me of this story http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/13202183.Former_PM_Brown_loses_fight_to_save_home_town_Tesco_as_old_Kirkcaldy_neighbour_is_crowned_superstore_chairman/

where the only thing you can say is if tesco is the hub of your community, you already lost a long time ago :-(

So you are a hippocrite, face it! (Bananaman Begins), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:09 (seven years ago) link

I mean, i'd prefer a bookshop to a target. But that's why there is the concept of the public good, you know? Because the free market is not your friend, devoted to making life comfortable and stimulating for u

So you are a hippocrite, face it! (Bananaman Begins), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:12 (seven years ago) link

Is self-trenchanting frowned upon btw

1/3 of B&N is Starbucks, Lego sets, and overpriced notebooks

At least Target has soap

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:51 (seven years ago) link

i realize this is prob the 3rd or 4th most bizarre part of the post but:

"Look at the height of the deck. It's about 3"

so the kid is what, 10 inches tall? is 3 inches too tall for a deck? what does this have to do with drowning?

dynamicinterface, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 13:06 (seven years ago) link

I guess if it's between Barnes & Noble and Target I'd take Barnes & Noble, but honestly in the age of Amazon there is no reason to go into a Barnes & Noble -- shitty selection and illiterate staff. People in my neighborhood mostly went so their toddlers could play with and fuck up the toy stock, or for free storytimes. That was my impression anyway, never a lot of people in the cash register line.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:50 (seven years ago) link

The actual problem in my neighborhood is that commercial rents on the main strip are almost inexplicably high, which favors chains.

Right now there's a group with a kickstarter project to open an indie bookstore in the neighborhood, and while I find starting a private business to be a slightly weird use of kickstarter, they've managed to raise almost $60K, and good on them I guess.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

I was halfway joking about the random stuff at B&N, but I actually was impressed by their selection of Funko Pop figures, some architectural lego-style kits, and some other random stuff they have these days. They also have a lot of vinyl records. 2016 is a hell of a time for large chain bookstores.

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

As easy as it is to laugh at them, I do sort of sympathize with people who make the categorical error of thinking the capitalist sphere is democratic, and thus "petition" for a store to stay open when it no longer can or wants to pay the asking rent.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

**shrug**

I love Barnes and Noble. Have a membership and shop there at least once a week.

Austin, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

xp - the neighborhood adjacent to me actually successfully petitioned and lobbied to get a Trader Joe's.

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 21:11 (seven years ago) link

meanwhile it's the best time of the year on my neighborhood NextDoor group: gunshots or fireworks?

sarahell, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 21:12 (seven years ago) link

why pick one?

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 21:38 (seven years ago) link

People really will not STFU about this Target coming in. I don't know what "mom-and-pop businesses" they are talking about that they say are going to be killed off. Convenience stores?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 15:21 (seven years ago) link

Our biggest Target controversy was when they _closed_ a Target in a kind of food-poor area and moved it a couple miles west. Was really glad to see some of the staff relocated, though. Honestly, there was less of a controversy than there should have been because the people most affected have less of a voice.

And yet another vaccine thread today, yay! As much as I am pro-vaccine and hate anti-vaxxers, this one is a case of a pro-vaccine parent needlessly stirring shit up, knowing the usual suspect crazies will come out of the woodwork.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 16:12 (seven years ago) link

We know who the three anti-vax parents are and they always say the same shit. I don't need to hear it again.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 16:13 (seven years ago) link

I have friends who joined the community group for a town a half hour away after hearing how hilariously bad the group posts were :)

Picture of a fountain

- "I've lived here for 55 years and have nver seen this fountain!"

- "It was installed about three years ago on North Ave."

- "Where is this? I've lived here for 40 years and have not once ever driven by this thing!"

- "WOW! WHERE IS THIS????"

- "Anyone remember eating at Sambo's?"

pplains, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 17:01 (seven years ago) link

nomar, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 17:30 (seven years ago) link

yeah, we had the fireworks complaint thread too

usually about twice a day someone asks for a doctor rec

suspicious person was at playground

Can anyone recommend things to do with children anywhere in New York City?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

- "Anyone remember eating at Sambo's?"

I laugh every time, but there probably is someone asking this on every community thread and pplains is wishing he'd never heard the name "Sambo's"

mh, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 18:07 (seven years ago) link

I forgot the best fb neighborhood thing I heard about

a local photographer took pictures of every confederate flag he saw at a local motorcycle meet-up city event, didn't comment on it, just a series of pictures of helmets, patches, jackets, and stickers featuring the confederate flag, and someone posted it without comment in the fb group

mh, Tuesday, 5 July 2016 18:28 (seven years ago) link

I wound up finding a PC Richards sales guy through my neighborhood group because I need a new dishwasher, and he actually started talking to me about how upset he was about the Barnes & Noble while I was on the phone with him!

I felt sort of embarrassed because I've occasionally trolled people about it.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:27 (seven years ago) link

don't have a neighborhood group but my train line has a group and it's been inflamed this week by smokers on the line ; obv smoking on the train is illegal but there's rarely security on the train so smokers occupy a whole section of the train and it gets thick. the group has been discussing techniques for stopping the smokers (like pulling alarms to get the train stopped for security to be called) and others are angry that it'll delay our rides and it goes on on on

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 8 July 2016 21:32 (seven years ago) link

have they asked ppl to please not smoke

mh, Friday, 8 July 2016 22:16 (seven years ago) link

the passengers? yeah but it's big groups, like 10+, of smokers. they just ignore requests. I'm all for jailing the lot of them but the fb group hasn't yet settled on a collective solution that doesn't involve the cops (since the cops aren't generally around)

droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 8 July 2016 22:23 (seven years ago) link

Guess the neighborhood is getting more upscale, cuz we now have our first (afaik) "Can you believe what these nannies are asking for?!" thread.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Friday, 15 July 2016 20:07 (seven years ago) link

I had to ban myself from the thread because I was getting so fucking irate, and I always have to remind myself "these are real people who live in my neighborhood. Their kids may go to school with my kids soon."

Ariella _________

3 hrs
..
First time mom smile emoticon:) seeing what's appropriate and fair for potential nannies. Interviewed a nanny last night and she requested two weeks paid vacation and five paid sick days, In addition to holidays.Do people here give their nannies paid vacation, paid national holidays and paid sick days? What about a metro card? Thanks so much! She would be with us 35 hours a week.

Eve________ She's probably part of ilanas nanny network. In my opinion that sounds cushier than my own job!

Ariella_____ [man alive] Pretty close to that and I'm on my husbands Heath insurance!

[NO, YOUR JOB AT A HIP NON-PROFIT WHILE YOUR HUSBAND MAKES BANK DOES NOT EQUATE YOU TO A NANNY, AND IN FACT, IF YOU ARE GETTING A FULL-TIME NANNY SO YOU CAN WORK AT A HIP NON-PROFIT, THAT'S PRETTY SWEET]

I mean as it is, I always spittake at the news that in the US, it seems the normal "good" job benefit is for only 2 weeks leave a year!?

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 17 July 2016 03:36 (seven years ago) link

(we get 4. Plus public holidays which'd be another 10 public holiday days off. PLus average 5-10 days sickleave).

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Sunday, 17 July 2016 03:38 (seven years ago) link

I get more vacation for every year I've worked there. I'm up to nearly european standards by now

mh, Sunday, 17 July 2016 03:48 (seven years ago) link

I've never had paid vacation at a job ... ever.

sarahell, Sunday, 17 July 2016 18:17 (seven years ago) link

PLPeni (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 17 July 2016 18:21 (seven years ago) link

I have had vacations ... like maybe 4 weeks of vacation (not counting the one day off before or after Christmas) ... in the last 15 years.
