probably not though - may just revisit my favorite TNG villain episodes ie, the Borg, Lore, and Q

I think it's time for a DS9 rewatch.
― Millsner, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 12:03 (seven years ago) link
i recommend skipping season 1 other than the first episode and "Progress" and "Duet", it's a whole lot of excitement-killing nothingness otherwise
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 13:30 (seven years ago) link
I think this is the fabled DS9 spreadsheet, which might be useful here
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 13:36 (seven years ago) link
im not a fan of that spreadsheet anymore, its purpose is more to show the episodes that are related to the main story arc so you miss out on some good one-offs
the ciderpress guide to DS9 goes something like this:
Season 1:EmissaryProgressDuet
Season 2:Necessary EvilWhispersThe Maquis Pts. 1&2The WireThe Jem'Hadar
Season 3:The Search Pts. 1&2Civil Defense (this one is skippable i just find it stupidly entertaining)DefiantPast Tense Pts. 1&2DestinyVisionaryImprobable CauseThe Die is CastThe Adversary
Season 4-7Just watch everything at this point. you can skip the ferengi episodes if you dont like those (S6 "The Magnificent Ferengi" is really good though) and the holosuite eps if you don't like those (S7 "It's Only A Paper Moon" is the good one there imo) but there aren't too many stinkers otherwise
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 13:55 (seven years ago) link
Hey I like "Move Along Home", "If Wishes Were Horses", "Q-Less" (which is like a Mirror-Universe Doctor Who episode) from season 1!
― write sed fread (Leee), Wednesday, 24 August 2016 17:57 (seven years ago) link
those are the goofy ones, i like them too but most of the ppl i recommend trek episodes to want the more dramatic stories
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link
Oh I would totally want the good goofy ones too. I mean, I even super enjoyed "Angel One"
― Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link
I always considered myself a big Trek fan but holy shit @ this thread. I know nothing.

Civil Defense (this one is skippable i just find it stupidly entertaining)
omg this is second only to "Far Beyond the Stars" as far as DS9 goes IMO.

totally gonna make deadline btw!
Deadline? What deadline?
I might extend it out a few more weeks just to give myself time to hit the highlights of TOS seasons 2 and 3. (Shakey, should I just look at a certain ahem list that you send me for reference?)
― write sed fread (Leee), Thursday, 8 September 2016 21:26 (seven years ago) link
Go on go on
― Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 8 September 2016 21:39 (seven years ago) link
well that's what *I* would say but other people have differing opinions. there are probably a handful of others that I think are either generally well-regarded or at least enjoyable via camp ridiculousness : The Immunity Syndrome, The Gamesters of Triskelion, Mudd's Women, I Mudd, etc. I also enjoy the Nazi/gangster/Roman planet ones altho I wouldn't say they are *great* exactly (they certainly established a trope that subsequent series returned to again and again)

Tholian Web another one I forgot to mention

fwiw not referring to the "planets with cultures remarkably like 20th Century Earth!" as much as "crew dropped into familiar historical scenario" (i.e. TNG does Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes or whatever. I have no idea if Voyager or DS9 did this, I suspect Enterprise did but who has time to watch that garbage)
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 8 September 2016 21:47 (seven years ago) link
yeah def a genre. btw first tng holmes ep is pretty terrible imo but second one (ship in a bottle) is my second-favorite tng ep after darmok (and my favorite screen moriarty?)

Top 5 are pretty easy, but below that, it's like rating your kids, you love them all in different ways.
Was the deadline actually extended?

I just watched Yesterday's Enterprise, and it was *quite* as good as I remember, which is flummoxing.
What's deal re: deadline?
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 9 September 2016 14:51 (seven years ago) link
whoops, I mean it wasn't quite as good
I've been going through the TNG episodes I remember as being good + others recommended here - watched "The Game" last night, which was pretty good. Another deus ex machina ending that felt pretty abrupt, which is something I've noticed as a general problem with this series. There's a lot of slow buildup/scene setting and then oh hey problem solved by rerouting the dampeners phase blast coordinates through the temporal circuits or whatever and v little actual resolution/denouement. For ex., in The Game once Data shows up and frees everyone from the game, there's zero discussion of who the aliens behind this plot were or what their motives were or how the game actually worked it was just "hey problem solved! now let's have a scene where Wesley and Ashley Judd kiss THE END"
Still generally a fun episode. I am always down with a chase scene through the Jeffries' tubes.
― Οὖτις, Friday, 9 September 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link
similar thing happens with the Q episode where the Borg is introduced - crew spends 2/3rds of the episodes freaking out about the Borg when it all boils down to just Picard apologizing to Q in order to get him to snap his fingers and wave everything away in the last 5 minutes. Just a kind of weird pacing.
(speaking of Squire of Gothos upthread - lol that Trelane was retconned into being a member of the Q Continuum)
― Οὖτις, Friday, 9 September 2016 16:56 (seven years ago) link
I can see and acknowledge that as a weakness. And then that's where DS9 started to shine when it had long strings of serialization, you really got that depth in the story.
― Jeff, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link
Back to my list, I'm struggling at the bottom where I want to include my favorite Bev and O'Brien focused episodes. Like maybe they aren't in my top 20 of all time, but I want to give them proper representation.
― Jeff, Friday, 9 September 2016 17:18 (seven years ago) link
