I guess I would've been more willing to consider giving up air travel a year ago, but now I have a curvy Costa Rican wife girlfriend, so without cheap flights our relationship wouldn't have happened and wouldn't have a future. That tends to make you more selfish about it.

Well then it's car, of course, fuck them! I guess air conditioning is even more pointless in here, but it seems like such a minor thing, I can't see it would really rate that high among carbon emission sources when compared to the other three?

air conditioner is easily one of the top BTU/wattage sucker in the house for most people. when you take into account the giant HVAC A/C systems that cool skyscrapers, office buildings, malls, etc....

air conditioning for sure

I only have one of these and I'll fight to the death to keep it! I grew up in a very cold house where plug in radiator time was rationed and 50 pences were required for the gas fire. I feel like I have way done my austerity for the environment and am still owed some fucking heat. As for the rest - I dont possess.

yeah think there's a discrepancy here between ppl thinking about their own personal HVAC loads in their homes (which can be p minimal depending on where you're living) but the public/private spaces that people spend the majority of their time in (workplaces, etc.), I guarantee you their biggest energy loads are from heating or A/C.
But, as I said on the other thread, at least there's a lot of efficiency work that can be done to bring these loads down and lower overall demand on the grid (and thereby overall GHG emissions, depending on the power source)

Soery, it's an old ILX meme, probably shouldn't have used it, but search for "curvy Colombian wife" if you want to see.

If you have some $$, you can derive air conditioning from a heat pump connected to a subterranean well or array of pipes. It's often called a 'ground sourced heat pump'. Installing the system is expensive, especially if they have to drill a 225 foot well through a lot of rock to sink the pipes, but once you can use the deep subsurface as a heat sink and a source of coolness, running the system is very cheap, not much more than electricity to run the fan and compressor.

I'd give up my car before any of the other stuff. I can use bike or public transport.

I didn't turn on the AC for weeks but I'll be damned if I'm living in a house that's 88 damn degrees Fahrenheit
