I like what you said about it on Letterboxd even better.

I liked La La Land OK but so many modern musicals are stuck between tradition and modernity.

And the completely modern ones (a la Once) suck even worse

And here are the Broadcast Critics Choice nominations. As usual I'd say the nominations race is wrapped up.

And, as usual, the critics groups most whorily vested in being accurate predictors for Oscar nods don't bother to wait for the Scorsese.

Haven't been following awards season this year, but was just perusing some listenings and there are more movies I really want to see in the next few weeks/months than there have been in some time.

(Portman) is, I hasten to add, singularly awful, though by virtue of the fact that the actress is attempting an impersonation of a dead celebrity with a highly recognizable speech pattern, she will automatically be catapulted into the awards season frontrunner shortlists, because of a popular tendency to confuse party-trick mimicry with great acting. Portman doesn’t bear much of a physical resemblance to the First Lady, but the technical aspects of her impression are more or less on the money—she gets the unusual cadences of Jackie’s speech, and most of her peculiar combination of boarding school elocution and mishmash mid-Atlantic phrasing, though speaking through her scrim of muzzy breathiness she sometimes strays closer to the pouty baby voice of Marilyn Monroe.

That Sight & Sound list is on the whole pretty pleasing and much stronger than last year's (from what I can tell at this stage). Agree that O.J can't really be considered a film though. I've nothing against TV, just so surprised to see it showing up on these lists. Apologies if I missed a whole debate.

Also I can't pretend I'm not nervous about Elle. No idea how those components can be grouped into something laudable, but everyone seems to like it so I'll try to reserve most of my judgement until I've actually seen it. These UK release dates are the worst.

What are your problems with LLL, Eric? I liked it well enough but it proved vaporous. I don't remember the songs or the moves – I remember Stone and Gosling singing and dancing.

Lacking in charm and talent, which wouldn't be in itself a problem if the movie's entire thesis weren't that charm and talent will naturally find their reward in Hollywood.

I'm not among those offended by Gosling's co-opting of jazz culture/traditions, but damn is the movie condescending toward Stone's resistance.

(Just listened to Scott Walker and it's really strong work, tho I still don't want to see the movie.)
