Whew, MOONLIGHT defeats LA LA LAND in picture/director.

Which means LA LA LAND is all set to win the Best Picture Oscar.

What are your problems with LLL, Eric? I liked it well enough but it proved vaporous. I don't remember the songs or the moves – I remember Stone and Gosling singing and dancing.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:26 (seven years ago) link

Lacking in charm and talent, which wouldn't be in itself a problem if the movie's entire thesis weren't that charm and talent will naturally find their reward in Hollywood.

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:33 (seven years ago) link

I'm not among those offended by Gosling's co-opting of jazz culture/traditions, but damn is the movie condescending toward Stone's resistance.

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

(Just listened to Scott Walker and it's really strong work, tho I still don't want to see the movie.)

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

I will say that this looks like a slightly better-than-average awards season run, if only because La La Land looks like the only thing I'm dead set against seeing. Assuming the Jackie O biopic has been declared DOA, that is.

I was disappointed too that Gosling wasn't nude.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 December 2016 17:49 (seven years ago) link

When even the BFCA can't find room for your prestige biopic slop in their best picture lineup, it's probably DOA, yes.

The Joe Barber Award for Best Portrayal of Washington, DC: Jackie

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Monday, 5 December 2016 18:23 (seven years ago) link

I debated whether to start a Jackie thread until I watched the screener on Saturday and felt like I needed a couple slugs of vodka.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 December 2016 18:26 (seven years ago) link

It's that bad? Because I kinda like Larrain, and had hoped for something as good as El Club :(

Frederik B, Monday, 5 December 2016 18:27 (seven years ago) link

I disliked The Club's last third intensely. Neruda was an admirable attempt to avoid biopic conventions, but it beached itself on voice-over.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 December 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

Manchester by the Sea was really remarkable. Can't remember the last time a movie ended with the main character ended up in the same place emotionally. All the promo made it look like one of these "broken man learns to live again through the opportunity to be a parental figure" redemption stories, but Affleck's character remains just as broken at the end of the movie. It really earns its 137 minutes.

flappy bird, Monday, 5 December 2016 18:34 (seven years ago) link

more critics groups should give an award to the old biddie at the beginning lump with horror at the thought of attending a niece's Bat Mitzvah ("I could slit my throat").

Print issue of Sight and Sound now out. You can probably guess who wrote this in their year round-up: "...Zack Snyder is the only maker of 'popular' films has who as a vision and sensibility that stirs great feeling and profound thoughts."

Had to see just how Arm0nd has been faring at Nat'l Review and ... I wan't disappointed.

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/441280/moonlight-barry-jenkins-intersectionality-black-gay-character

Moonlight pleads for pity for a gay, black character, and pity is always for the weak.

everyone needs to calm down about Moonlight. it was good, nothing special. critics & the Academy are stoked that after losing The Birth of a Nation, they got another movie that checks even more boxes: gay, black, drugs, class, bullying...

AW

Darcy Sarto (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:37 (seven years ago) link

I mean, as far as movies about young gay black protagonists I did prefer Being 17, referenced in the review; it's probably my film of the year. But...they have nothing in common.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:41 (seven years ago) link

Yes, I genuinely admire what AW smuggles into the obvious dismissals.

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:43 (seven years ago) link

"Intersectionality is the new stereotyping" is such an Arm0nd phrase. He's a specialist in the incoherent sneer.

But is Moonlight’s Trayvon Martin–type martyrdom any better?

OK, I really must've missed something here.

Ballistic: ILX vs. Sever (Eric H.), Tuesday, 6 December 2016 19:57 (seven years ago) link

I haven't seen Moonlight yet, but it strikes me that a one-sentence synopsis alone could land it awards...

Edelstein also krazy for Krisha, and LLL:
