What are your problems with LLL, Eric? I liked it well enough but it proved vaporous. I don't remember the songs or the moves – I remember Stone and Gosling singing and dancing.

Lacking in charm and talent, which wouldn't be in itself a problem if the movie's entire thesis weren't that charm and talent will naturally find their reward in Hollywood.

I'm not among those offended by Gosling's co-opting of jazz culture/traditions, but damn is the movie condescending toward Stone's resistance.

(Just listened to Scott Walker and it's really strong work, tho I still don't want to see the movie.)

I will say that this looks like a slightly better-than-average awards season run, if only because La La Land looks like the only thing I'm dead set against seeing. Assuming the Jackie O biopic has been declared DOA, that is.

I was disappointed too that Gosling wasn't nude.

When even the BFCA can't find room for your prestige biopic slop in their best picture lineup, it's probably DOA, yes.

Then again, the surfeit of critics groups that can't have more than a half dozen people voting does sometimes portend unhappy resurrections:

I debated whether to start a Jackie thread until I watched the screener on Saturday and felt like I needed a couple slugs of vodka.

It's that bad? Because I kinda like Larrain, and had hoped for something as good as El Club :(

I disliked The Club's last third intensely. Neruda was an admirable attempt to avoid biopic conventions, but it beached itself on voice-over.

Manchester by the Sea was really remarkable. Can't remember the last time a movie ended with the main character ended up in the same place emotionally. All the promo made it look like one of these "broken man learns to live again through the opportunity to be a parental figure" redemption stories, but Affleck's character remains just as broken at the end of the movie. It really earns its 137 minutes.

more critics groups should give an award to the old biddie at the beginning lump with horror at the thought of attending a niece's Bat Mitzvah ("I could slit my throat").
