i haven't seen it yet but can't fuckin' understand the Viggo Capt Fantastic thing

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 January 2017 21:53 (seven years ago) link

Same, tbh. The kids are clearly better.

ILXorcist 2: The Heretic (Eric H.), Friday, 20 January 2017 21:55 (seven years ago) link

Always disappointed the Cap Fan isn't a Viggo as Elton biopic.

It's possible more Academy members appreciate Vig's schlong more than I anticipated.

Should Be Nominated: Knight of Cups

you too, huh

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 January 2017 22:00 (seven years ago) link

Captain Fantastic looked terrible but a lot of people I trust (and thought the same thing based on the trailer) loved it. who knows...

flappy bird, Friday, 20 January 2017 22:00 (seven years ago) link

KOC was fine until it turned into an Aetna commercial in the last 30 minutes; I don't understand the ire.

Guess Annette Bening's getting robbed, eh

hoping ralph finnes gets nommed

johnny crunch, Friday, 20 January 2017 22:03 (seven years ago) link

nuthin doin

He was my vote.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 20 January 2017 22:03 (seven years ago) link

i've had that movie out from the library for weeks and have no desire to watch it.

There was a funny bad feminist art/performance scene in KoC, and that was all i think. Plus Wes Bentley was in it, and there's no excuse for that.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 January 2017 22:07 (seven years ago) link

kinda crazy that fiennes has only had a pair of academy award noms (unless i'm mistaken on that.)

nomar, Friday, 20 January 2017 22:10 (seven years ago) link

Should Be Nominated: Knight of Cups

you too, huh

The "should be nominated" were arrived as a combination of Ed's and my suggestions. Tho he did veto my Aubrey Plaza pick.

ILXorcist 2: The Heretic (Eric H.), Friday, 20 January 2017 22:15 (seven years ago) link

oh no surprise then

apparently Black Book is the only film ive seen Matthias Schoenaerts in

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 January 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link

Happy Hour is the overrated one from that article, honestly.

At first glance, that's one of the less objectionable list of nominees I've seen in some time.

Is this the first year Pixar was shut out of Best Animated Feature?

Transformed From The Norm By The Nuclear Goop (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:04 (seven years ago) link

oh god -- I just noticed Mel Gibson.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:07 (seven years ago) link

As usual, a few things I'm looking forward to (Arrival, Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight) and a bunch more that I have zero interest in ever watching.

The biggest surprise, for me, glancing at the list is that the love for the mediocre Hell or High Water lasted all the way to Oscar season.

No, not always (Life Is Beautiful immediately comes to mind).

Huppert's is the only nomination I cared about, Negga's too to a lesser extent

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:31 (seven years ago) link

A couple of milestones I noticed:

- first time there's been a black nominee in each of the four acting categories
- first time that black actors have been in the majority in a category (supporting actress: Davis, Harris, Spencer)

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:59 (seven years ago) link

First time Afrocentric entries have dominated the doc feature category?

Transformed From The Norm By The Nuclear Goop (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:14 (seven years ago) link

on that score, “Fire at Sea” is largely about North Africans attempting to perilously emigrate to Europe.

How the fuck did Mel Gibson worm his way back into acceptable society

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:40 (seven years ago) link

how the fuck did the studio get away with getting Dev Patel into Supporting? He plays the titular character!

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:45 (seven years ago) link

there's a kid who also plays him, though

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

how is Viola Davis a supporting actress?

Answer: #politics

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

that's one of the stronger best documentary lineups I've seen

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

La La Land, with 14 nominations, ties the record of "most nominations ever" with Titanic and All About Eve

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

Wow, I didn't realize it was one of the greatest films ever, but I guess Oscar has spoken!

Transformed From The Norm By The Nuclear Goop (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:49 (seven years ago) link

there's a kid who also plays him, though

the kid is only in the first 10-15 mins.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:49 (seven years ago) link

No way, the kid is the star for half the movie. Dev Patel doesn't show up until a full hour in.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:50 (seven years ago) link

20th nomination for Robostreep; she'll keep getting em after she expires if they digitize her into new things.

First year a John Williams score hasn't been nominated since '92.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link

have you seen her last couple movies? She's digitized already.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

and people aren't wrong to point out that Chiron's victimhood puts him in line with many traditional Hwood depictions of gay people (though the ending is certainly not)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:47 (seven years ago) link

It's a film we'll argue about for the next 30 years if Florida doesn't join Atlantis, and there ain't many recent BP winners about which we can make that claim.

"we" being America or ILX?

I would've been more personally invested in the queer barrier if it had been broken by Fight Club.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:58 (seven years ago) link

btw somebody commented about Beatty and Dunaway's equally appalling face "work," and I must say whaaa? Warren may have had some, but his face is a plausible 79-year-old version of his younger one, whereas I couldn't guess who Faye was without identification.

catching up on movies that didn't get nominated, watched Edge of Seventeen, that was a thrillingly entertaining little film, hailee steinfeld should have been nominated along with annette benning and either of them were more deserving than emma stone

With a modified card, even if the presenters had gotten the wrong one, none of this would have happened because the presenters would’ve looked at it and one of two things would’ve happened: Their eyes would’ve read “Best Actress” or “Emma Stone.” Reading either of those would indicate that this wasn’t the card for Best Picture, and they would’ve asked Jimmy Kimmel or a producer to the stage to get it corrected.

The card needed to be written and designed in a way that makes it clear to the reader only the essential information.
