seems the idea of Moonlight being forever linked with LLL is leaving a funny taste. the post-Oscars Vanity Fair cover, unlike in previous years has a picture of the 2 directors from the 2 films instead of just the one who directed the winner.

Ah, I see. I wish that Moonlight was good enough that I could care about that.

I don't care deeply about Moonlight--I liked it--but I agree with the tweet that having to share the cover with La La Land is unwarranted.
― clemenza, Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:07 (seven years ago) link
as someone else noted the cover traditionally goes to the directing winner so technically it's LLL that's "sharing" in that case

That is not what happened. Variety traditionally puts the Best Director winner (in this case, Damien Chazelle) on the morning after cover. Due to the unique and historical circumstances around Moonlight's win (not the flub, just the importance of the movie winning Best Pic I think) they asked Chazelle and Jenkins to do a joint cover. Jenkins himself on Twitter:

@shaehag @Variety There just is absolutely no controversy here. Had La La Land won pic and me director I would have the cover.
People reacting to a very cool/historical and I think good choice to honor Jenkins as well as Chazelle by literally inventing fake news outrage.

I didn't love Moonlight but let's be clear: this is the first outright queer film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. This is a big deal. And a black queer film! I don't expect BP winners to be as pretty good and sometimes excellent as Moonlight often is.

I didn't know the best director got the cover. In that case, I applaud them for extending that to include Barry Jenkins.

Midnight Cowboy = subtly queer
and the gay British director won for that
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:37 (seven years ago) link
I don't know how people can't care about Moonlight. You must look for different things in a film than I do
― akm, Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:38 (seven years ago) link
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius),
Covert not overt. As a film crit colleague wrote today Moonlight is explicitly about a gay character coming of age. Voight is clearly the star of MC, and even though Ratso is clearly coded as gay, Joe Buck's place on the Kinsey scale is more ambiguous.

i know, it was just the first parallel that came to mind
everyone knows Jenkins is straight, right?
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:43 (seven years ago) link
and people aren't wrong to point out that Chiron's victimhood puts him in line with many traditional Hwood depictions of gay people (though the ending is certainly not)

It's a film we'll argue about for the next 30 years if Florida doesn't join Atlantis, and there ain't many recent BP winners about which we can make that claim.

"we" being America or ILX?
I would've been more personally invested in the queer barrier if it had been broken by Fight Club.

Why does Martha Ruiz have to lose her Oscar gig just because the fucking white dude couldn't be bothered to take care of his shit instead of tweeting a pic of Emma Stone?

btw somebody commented about Beatty and Dunaway's equally appalling face "work," and I must say whaaa? Warren may have had some, but his face is a plausible 79-year-old version of his younger one, whereas I couldn't guess who Faye was without identification.

With a modified card, even if the presenters had gotten the wrong one, none of this would have happened because the presenters would’ve looked at it and one of two things would’ve happened: Their eyes would’ve read “Best Actress” or “Emma Stone.” Reading either of those would indicate that this wasn’t the card for Best Picture, and they would’ve asked Jimmy Kimmel or a producer to the stage to get it corrected. The card needed to be written and designed in a way that makes it clear to the reader only the essential information.

icymi the Academy passed a rule so another TV series can never win the doc feature award again; too bad it took OJ to get that done.
