Ha, so "Earl Hofert" is his uncle's name. I had wondered where he'd come up with it.

Aw, man, that obit messed me up. Letterman has always felt to me like a local celebrity (even though he was never actually local at any time in my living memory), and his mom was definitely an extension of that. And many of those biographical details could've been describing any one or another of my Hoosier grandmas.

Haven't heard the name Gene Stratton Porter in a dog's age.

Finished reading Jason Zinoman's Letterman biography. Takeaway: Yes, you can make a lot of money, but at what cost?

I read it too and I'm not sure what he means by that. Cost to himself? Cost to other people in his life?

Suddenly hopeful for a Scorsese-DiCaprio biopic of Richard Simmons.

The bio definitely paints a picture of a more neurotic and self-flagellating Dave than what people might imagine. And the writer's not afraid to spotlight the creepiness of some of the older Dave's behavior on and off the TV camera. The book's a bit darker than expected. But my takeaway was that the guy has always had a streak of insecurity and unhappiness directed inward, no matter what kind of success he was having at the time. What evolved was his willingness to reveal that side of himself to the TV audience.

well, at some point Dave froze out Sandra Bernhard and starting having Regis Philbin on 4x a year. You be the judge.

Can't speak to WASPs, but as the grandson of a Minnesotan farmer, we just don't see the value of complaining. Winter is harsh, Ole's hand got caught in the thresher, there's nothing to be done about it.

Zinoman's book on North American horror movies c. 1968-78, while treading on wellllll-worn territory, was very well done.
