That's where I heard him.

I forgot that he sent Mom to 'cover' the Winter Olympics THREE times.

Letterman: “Is it cold there, Mom?”
Dave’s Mom: “It’s four degrees Celsius.”
Letterman: “Well that don’t do me no good, I’m from Indiana. What the hell is that?”
Dave’s Mom: “You figure it out.”

Her interview with Nancy Kerrigan in 1994 was the only good one.

Ha, so "Earl Hofert" is his uncle's name. I had wondered where he'd come up with it.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Thursday, 13 April 2017 02:09 (seven years ago) link

Aw, man, that obit messed me up. Letterman has always felt to me like a local celebrity (even though he was never actually local at any time in my living memory), and his mom was definitely an extension of that. And many of those biographical details could've been describing any one or another of my Hoosier grandmas.

Finished reading Jason Zinoman's Letterman biography. Takeaway: Yes, you can make a lot of money, but at what cost?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 April 2017 14:36 (seven years ago) link

I read it too and I'm not sure what he means by that. Cost to himself? Cost to other people in his life?

DL's most creative era was obv when his salary was 'low' and audience relatively small (ie '82-89)

one could draw a rough parallel with Scorsese

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 April 2017 15:36 (seven years ago) link

not having gotten to the book, i don't know what specifically Perrin drew from it

Kundun is a p good film, no role for DiCraprio

Suddenly hopeful for a Scorsese-DiCaprio biopic of Richard Simmons.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 27 April 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

The bio definitely paints a picture of a more neurotic and self-flagellating Dave than what people might imagine. And the writer's not afraid to spotlight the creepiness of some of the older Dave's behavior on and off the TV camera. The book's a bit darker than expected. But my takeaway was that the guy has always had a streak of insecurity and unhappiness directed inward, no matter what kind of success he was having at the time. What evolved was his willingness to reveal that side of himself to the TV audience.

Josefa, Thursday, 27 April 2017 15:58 (seven years ago) link

well, at some point Dave froze out Sandra Bernhard and starting having Regis Philbin on 4x a year. You be the judge.

Dave always seemed neurotic as fuck to me, as much as ppl don't think of it as a Midwest WASP thing. (i've known a couple guys who wrote for him)

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 April 2017 16:05 (seven years ago) link

That's absolutely a Midwest WASP thing. Midwestern WASPs are just suuuuuuuper good at pretending to be stoic paragons of mental health.

DL's self-confessional moment was in the wake of the office-affair thing, he basically said all that at his desk

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 27 April 2017 16:19 (seven years ago) link

Can't speak to WASPs, but as the grandson of a Minnesotan farmer, we just don't see the value of complaining. Winter is harsh, Ole's hand got caught in the thresher, there's nothing to be done about it.

Zinoman's book on North American horror movies c. 1968-78, while treading on wellllll-worn territory, was very well done.
