The depoliticization of violence

In direct proportion to how the American understanding of political activity has been impoverished—shrunk down to a trip to the ballot box that a pitiful fraction of Americans will make once every four years—our investment of political significance into comparative trivialities has mushroomed to the point where even an act of horrifying, self-evident violence must be “explained” or “understood” by documenting where a killer clicked “like” on Facebook. Meanwhile, a pair of women remain terrorized, and two of three bystanders who attempted to stop a hate crime are dead.

David Axelrod's perfectly timed deadpan always makes me laugh (talking about Spicer and "covfefe"):

"He goes out there and says things that are laughable, and...people laugh."

I can't reload this whole thread--I'm sure that's been posted today. I really enjoy dry, morbid humour; hate crudity, hate gross. Kathy Griffin's thing just isn't funny. I'm far from outraged or anything, just wish she blew up her career over a better joke. I self-censor myself on Facebook all the time. Whenever someone posts something and I think of a great line that's guaranteed to have people crowding around me and telling me I should die, I send it along in a private message. "This is what I was going to post--the little voice in my head said 'no.'"

Wish there was a thread for that

I mostly just don't get the point of it, plus am pretty much not a fan of Kathy Griffin, so it's kinda difficult to defend on anything but 'definitely not illegal, ffs' grounds.

I thought Sally Weaver was a great character. "Lay it on me, stringbean." I don't really know her outside of that.

You're right, we've got one here...Facebook needs the same thing; a whole separate wall limited to friends who aren't going to go all apoplectic if you can't help making a connection between posts about their children and The Exorcist.

I hope no counter protesters show up to that Patriot Prayer rally and that the Patriots, bored now that nobody took their bait, just eat each other

fuckin' can't believe how low the limbo bar keeps going. "1950s" a goal now?

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 23:47 (seven years ago) link

Wasn't the "patriot prayer" scheduled before the stabbing?

stabbings, plural

sleeve, Thursday, 1 June 2017 00:04 (seven years ago) link

1950s? It is the first decade you can go back to that definitely had television, good highways and rural electricity, but also had Jim Crow laws and no federal civil rights enforcement. For some people that looks like the sweet spot to aim for. It's a shame about the constant Cold War fear of annihilation, but hey you can't have everything.

xxpost whether it was or it wasn't, i'm against free speech rallies where "free speech" is just a dog whistle for something sinister.

which isn't to say I don't think they have the right to assemble, but I don't have to feel sad if one of them gets run over by his own tractor on the way there

Charles "Butt" Stanton (Neanderthal), Thursday, 1 June 2017 00:10 (seven years ago) link

yes, of course. they are ghouls -- no argument from me there.

but it would be especially obscene -- unthinkable even -- if this was an event that was explicitly designed to be in support of this racist murderer

Treeship, Thursday, 1 June 2017 00:19 (seven years ago) link

it probably will draw more people because of the tragedy though, which brought notoriety. so that's pretty heinous.

Treeship, Thursday, 1 June 2017 00:21 (seven years ago) link

well the racist murderer apparently thinks he was standing his ground for freedom of speech when he slit throats

From Code Warriors: NSA's Codebreakers and the Secret Intelligence War Against the Soviet Union, by Stephen Budiansky

A Soviet defector, Arkady Shevchenko, subsequently confirmed that other well-situated facilities used by Soviet diplomats in the United States—an eighteen-story residential complex in Riverdale in the Bronx, located on one of the highest spots in New York City; a Long Island mansion on thirty-seven acres in Glen Cove that served as a recreational retreat; and another recreational facility on the Eastern Shore of Maryland—were used to eavesdrop on microwave towers that served not only the major long-distance telephone links to Washington and New York, but also Andrews Air Force Base, where the president’s Air Force One was based, and Norfolk, Virginia, home of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. “It is most unlikely that these sites were selected for any other reason than microwave interception,” an AT&T analysis concluded. The Soviets’ Washington-area intercepts of unencrypted phone calls by U.S. officials and defense contractors were, according to KGB defector Vasili Mitrokhin, Moscow’s “most important source of intelligence on the foreign and defense policies of the Ford and Carter administrations.”

i am glad other people have to regularly double check to make sure that was not kathy griffin on newsradio

sorry, vicki lewis!

wait, what? i always thought that was griffin!!! lol

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 June 2017 03:46 (seven years ago) link

I think KG got in the public eye just as Newsradio was ending and Vicki Lewis didn't get a next tv gig as high profile and the public mind got confused

mh, Thursday, 1 June 2017 03:47 (seven years ago) link

Kathy Griffin was on Suddenly Susan (Brooke Shields sitcom), which was on NBC around the same time NewsRadio was.

Further discussion of Vicki Lewis will be happening shortly over in the 90s Hot thread.

I never thought about it before, but how weird was it for NBC to have two competing female-led ensemble sitcoms about magazines (Just Shoot Me! and Suddenly Susan)? The '90s, man.

to fly across the city and find Aerosmith's car (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 1 June 2017 04:06 (seven years ago) link

Throw all the magazine related shows to the wall and see what sticks, great strategy

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 June 2017 04:10 (seven years ago) link

There's one episode of Newsradio where Vicki Lewis does a quick Griffin impression after noting that every office has a spunky redhead
