the look-back bores were out in force in the 90's as well. There seemed to be no club you could go to for a night out that wasn't shite these days and had peaked in '89. And apparently the overpriced ecstasy from the late 80's was so much better than the adulterated rubbish we were necking as well.

I really miss the days as a DJ when you didn't have to be a media king , you didn't care about your billing on a flyer, you didn't have a rider, no one knew what you had for dinner and no one cared about how many followers you had . All that mattered was making people dance— FABIO (@fabiodnb) November 30, 2017

there was a contract between dj and clubber - they played the tunes, we danced to them. these days it's never that simple. there are more tunes for one, and more djs. yes, it's music, but is it really music? are you really dancing to it?
― Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 2 December 2017 13:53 (six years ago) link
time was when we'd drive around the M25 for 8 or 9 hours in my mate's Citreon Saxo until we got a text identifying the location of a rave going off in a field somewhere just south of Corby. then we'd drive up their in the dark with a tape full of tunes banging on the cassette player. today it's all Google Maps and USBs and air conditioning. these kids aren't ravers.

A commentary in La Stampa spoke of a "cancer that corrodes the internet". The young man who took the selfie was not bad, argued Antonella Boralevi. Instead, he had turned off his soul and his personality and become an "automaton of the internet".

I mean, quite literally, “fort night.”
It’s a simple reminiscence, but one that delights me more the older I get. We adults, in a failure of imagination, have forgotten how to build forts.

My favorite version of this: nearly 20 years ago I was given the New Yorker Book of Food and Drink (whatever the title), which contained a bunch of stories from the magazine about food in chronological order of appearance. I swear every 10 years there was another story by a classic NYer writer about the death of French cuisine and that the current version was but a pale reflection of the classic cuisine of 20 years ago.
