i've been jumping around to different seasons. i've seen 3 and 4 and large chunks of 2 and 5. 4 feels like the high point. the early years are good too but Mark is a complete non-entity. the core cast has so much character but he just has this inoffensive mumbley passive aggressive thing that kinda doesn't work. it's like John Paul George Ringo and Kevin over here.

omg the episode with Andy Samberg. that funny, loud goofball.

I loved him. Shame he was only in the one episode (wasn't he?).

Also loved the pest control guys.

one year passes...

This may technically be an abuse of the thread rubric but as an avowed superfan who has seen the show probably 3x through at this point and loves it about as much as I love any show from this century, I'm cashing my chips to recommend that other superfans check out Schitt's Creek. There was some agreement in the Netflix recommendations thread that the two shows are mining v similar 'laughs + heart' territory. I've very quickly gone from years of avoidance (largely because of the admittedly awful name) to loving it deeply. WATCH IT. I wish someone had made me do it much earlier, like preferably before the final season was airing.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 12:59 (four years ago) link

It is a pretty good show, and I avoided it for a long time for the same reason.

Corduroy Stridulations (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 13:11 (four years ago) link

I am deep into the first season of Schitt’s Creek and it is great

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 13:11 (four years ago) link

Agreed, I thought it took a few eps to get going but definitely the same vein.

Doubling down on out of date information (aldo), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 13:27 (four years ago) link

I considered just starting a new thread but, well, y'know. Final season and all that. It's kind of a bummer.

(I'm secretly hoping for a spin-off that's just David wandering into the motel lobby and riffing with Stevie. I could watch those two for hours. Where the hell has Dan Levy been all my life?!)

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 13:44 (four years ago) link

Schitt's Creek improved a lot for me a few seasons in - could barely tolerate Roland in the first 2

nashwan, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 13:50 (four years ago) link

I feel you on Roland but, otoh, it's kinda saying something when the weakest element of a show is Chris Elliott (who I generally love).

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 13:52 (four years ago) link

I generally hate Chris and this show is no exception! I also avoided it because of its name, but caught up about a month ago and it is truly divine. Completely in love with all characters (except Chris Elliot’s)

John Candy would have been great in his role. Imagine!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 16:30 (four years ago) link

watched the first half-dozen shows or so; catherine o'hara is incredible, the others are fine, chris elliott sucks deeply

mookieproof, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 16:58 (four years ago) link

Keep going, it only gets better

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 16:59 (four years ago) link

One of the lower-key things that is cracking me up more the more I notice it is the weird gangly arm-swinging half-run thing Bob does every time he enters or leaves a scene.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 17:11 (four years ago) link

yeah that Bob move is all time

my hatred of (televisual) Canadiana does not permit me to watch this but I'm glad we finally made a TV show you people can enjoy

bold caucasian eroticism (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 19:21 (four years ago) link

'finally', pssh. KITH might be my all-time fave, friend.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 19:25 (four years ago) link

I've lived in canada 7 years and i think this is the first time americans have watched a canadian show that is currently being broadcast

frederik b. godt (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 19:26 (four years ago) link

TBF, I'm usually a minimum of seven years behind on most American shows.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 19:27 (four years ago) link

Looking forward to Kim’s Convenience getting it’s due once the son achieves worldwide fame as whatever superhero he was cast as

Kim’s convenience is great too, but Schitt’s creek is just the best.

do americans watch trailer park boys? letterkenny?

symsymsym, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 07:47 (four years ago) link

I knew some Pittsburghers who were obsessed by trailer park boys, I could never get into it.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 08:41 (four years ago) link

Yeah, I tried it and it was decidedly not my thing. I didn't try very hard, though, tbf.

Dr. Teeth and the Women (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 13:13 (four years ago) link

The bar trivia company I work for is doing a nation-wide Letterkenny quiz event later this year, so I guess people watch it?

a bevy of supermodels, musicians and Lena Dunham (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 29 January 2020 17:25 (four years ago) link

The Schitt's Creek thing where the members of the Rose family default to a repulsed 'ew' as a generalized exclamatory utterance is simply the best. I endeavor to employ it in my everyday life.

ah, it was adorable enough. could've done without the singalong but the rest was great. Loved seeing the unexpected Pawnee guesters like Joan Calamezzo. i really miss this show.
Leslie's all-encompassing love for Ann and calling her a "desert fox" put me in stitches

It was fun enough, loved the on the verge of another breakdown Ben with a claymation Cones of Dunshire script.
