Sorry Austin, too -- I think that's the largest U.S. city without a major sports franchise.

Las Vegas?

Las Vegas?

Going strictly by city boundaries, Austin is about 750k and Las Vegas is about 550k.

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

OK I live in the 25th largest metro area in the US apparently, but I voted no b/c of the original topic of the poll - that is, it doesn't really have much of an independent film/arts scene. But I guess by my definition there's only like 4 major US cities.

jergins, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:46 (fifteen years ago) link

NYC MSA includes parts of four states, including where all the sports teams are located and where one of the members of Metro Area is from

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:46 (fifteen years ago) link

in DC we don't count the Nationals as a major league franchise but we do count Obama as one.

sussing out the Slick Hustler (I DIED), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:47 (fifteen years ago) link

o wait, only the CMSA includes part of PA, i think

ice cr?m, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Major city = wouldn't sound laughably out of place name dropped in Alex Gopher's "Party People."

nu hollywood (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

So, I'm sorry, but "Phoenix! Hong Kong! Montreal!" is a no.

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Look, Ben, movie distribution does not have anything to do with whether a city is "major" or not.

ian, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link

lol, heated

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

if yr city is not on one of those lists, it's not a major city for purposes of the original discussion

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

the original discussion was about women directing films and not whether they lived in major cities iirc.

ian, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:09 (fifteen years ago) link

albany has 95,000 people

a city is a major city if it has both a brewery and a folk art museum, end of discussion.

Every major city should have a statue of Paul Bunyan in it, meaning the following are the only major cities in the US:

Bemidji, Minnesota
Brainerd, Minnesota
Westwood, California
Del Norte County, California
St. Ignace, Michigan
Ossineke, Michigan
Enchanted Forest Water Safari, New York
Eau Claire, Wisconsin
