quote by herman mankiewicz that i read years ago and always stayed with me for some reason:Barbara Stanwyck is my favorite. My God, I could just sit and dream of being married to her, having a little cottage out in the hills, vines around the door. I'd come home from the office tired and weary, and I'd be met by Barbara, walking through the door holding an apple pie she had cooked herself. And wearing no drawers.― fit and working again, Tuesday, December 24, 2013 2:36 PM (six years ago) bookmarkflaglink

Only just watched Double Indemnity for the first time and Barbara Stanwyck is obviously stunning in it but that could be a different person in the shot above, apart from the nose. She has the best nose ever

Well, she's in her mid-30s in Double Indemnity, I reckon the above photo is probably up to 15 years earlier.

Stanwyck is all-time. Unlike Mankiewicz, I cannot imagine the part with the apple pie. But the rest, yes. I checked out some Cleo De Mérode photos and they all seem so shyly demure as to verge on lifeless.

Just saw Thief Of Bagdad (1940), I really like John Justin's face (but his moustache is one of the amusingly jarring things in the film), didn't think I'd ever seen him before but he was in some Ken Russell films in smaller roles.
I thought there must be some fanfiction about him and Sabu, but to my surprise there are 49 pieces on ArchiveOfOurOwn and from skimming the tags and synopses most of them seem to be about Conrad Veidt and the princess, in sympathy with him! I guess some people found his desperation and passion charming?

All the talk of The Silent Partner on the obituary thread has me thinking about Celine Lomez, also in Réjeanne Padovani.

Not strictly speaking relevant to this thread, but my main memory of Réjeanne Padovani (the film) was that it had the ugliest costumes in any film ever (mid-70's Quebec politicians in garish polyester suits), utterly authentic to the time and place though.
