Groans at most people who say "what it means to be human" as their overarching theme.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 29 June 2019 14:28 (four years ago) link
Well, at least we know that whatever it's about, Game of Thrones is most definitely *not* about "what it means to be human." Maybe what it means to be not-human? Perhaps, if they actually bothered to answer that question.

maybe 2 times out of 10, but much of the time that description tells you nothing or is really inaccurate.

Thread imitates its subject matter by devolving into an unsatisfactory detente between a couple of people who never cared that much about the title object to begin with
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 29 June 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link
I mostly return to the thread for the gif of the ice zombie falling off his horse in front of a green screen, which I think more than anything captures a certain truth about this show.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 29 June 2019 18:48 (four years ago) link
You sure that's not just the interpretation that flatters you?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 30 June 2019 18:34 (four years ago) link
I'm fine with the hating onthread but I find these approaches odd.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 30 June 2019 18:35 (four years ago) link
But you are right about the falling off horse gif, I was just joking around.

Lame that they didnt submit her, easily one of the best performances in the show
― bookmarkflaglink (jim in vancouver), Friday, 19 July 2019 09:10 (four years ago) link
They didn’t submit Melessandre or Theon either and they got nominated as well
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 19 July 2019 11:44 (four years ago) link
Christie getting herself nominated would be much more impressive if they had been more discriminate. Headey, really?
― Simon H., Friday, 19 July 2019 13:39 (four years ago) link
Yeah, they nominated everyone but Yara.
― Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Friday, 19 July 2019 14:01 (four years ago) link
I assumed the nominations were kind of a lifetime achievement award, since the last seasons were so bad?
― Karl Malone, Friday, 19 July 2019 14:09 (four years ago) link
headey probably deserved one for a past season so i wouldn't be mad if she won.

the script for the finale confirms that Benioff and Weiss are complete morons (not that we didn't already know)

I still haven't gotten around to watching the final season of this. I guess I should just not bother at this point? I'm tempted to just read the wikipedia synopsis (or the novels, I guess, if they ever come into existence)
― silverfish, Thursday, 15 August 2019 19:34 (four years ago) link
yeah, don't watch it; it's hot garbage. zombie fight is fun, but stupid.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 15 August 2019 19:36 (four years ago) link
I'll wait for the wikipedia article about the podcasts about the crowd-funded remake of the final season thank you
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Thursday, 15 August 2019 19:36 (four years ago) link
Ellis has a good eye for details there, cf Bronn abandoning his gold at the loot train to save Jaime vs him a season later being easily bribed into killing Jaime and Tyrion

If you've got low expectations (as I did), you'll probably enjoy it.
― chap, Friday, 16 August 2019 09:02 (four years ago) link
It's enjoyable enough up until the final episode which is a complete car crash.
― Matt DC, Friday, 16 August 2019 09:48 (four years ago) link
It's not great, but it's fine. It easily hurdles over the low bar of being better than the BSG and Lost finales, at least.
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 16 August 2019 11:57 (four years ago) link
The season or two before it wasn't great either. If you enjoyed those keep with it? There's stuff to enjoy regardless.

Last season is worse than having your nuts smashed in a car door, better than having them caught in a moving escalator.
― Mazzy Tsar (PBKR), Friday, 16 August 2019 12:11 (four years ago) link
I'd rather spend an eternity in hell rewatching the finale than a disappointed fan vlog about the finale
― Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 16 August 2019 12:16 (four years ago) link
the last season isn't so bad if you think of it as a very long action movie starring actors who previously appeared on the tv show Game of Thrones
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 16 August 2019 12:41 (four years ago) link
It was the last ever episode of Numberblocks this week, now that's how you nail a finale.

Feel 100% validated in all my criticisms & it’s obvious it was a lot weaker when it went away from the books.
― gyac, Monday, 28 October 2019 13:38 (four years ago) link
it seems like these guys could have fairly competently pulled off a 10 episode series based on a standalone 500 pages historical fiction novel, but why the hell tackle a fantasy series if magic gives you the ickies?
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 28 October 2019 13:42 (four years ago) link
tbf they said downplaying the fantasy elements was an HBO directive
Was it infinity? I have yet to see it. I liked the film noir one I saw a while ago.

It was a big song and dance routine about how much more fun you're going to have with numbers in the future, and about how even though you won't see any more of us here, we'll be with you for the rest of your life. It's beautiful! Can't fully explain why but I've cried both times I've watched it, and just typing this is giving me wet eyes again.
Oh and number 42 makes a cameo appearance and he's dressed like Arthur Dent.

they'll do a Watchmen series type deal. Pick it up fifty years after the end of the main series, have some new threat, etc.
― omar little, Tuesday, 29 October 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link
i think the one issue lingering w/the last couple seasons of GOT is that it revealed a fundamental lack of understanding about what had made the show great in the early going, and anyone handing these guys a show where they have to come up with the stories needs to remember that. they did however pull off a genuinely fine direct adaptation in those first four seasons, with few false notes and a welcome resistance to showing too much (much like the novels kept a lot of battle action offscreen).
