So sorry to hear that. But it's good he had a peaceful end.

So sad. A dignified death is what we all hope for though, I guess.

Here's Puck. He's 14, looking a little winded here, but that's hardly ever the case. He's still a champ!

A few years ago, not so white in the face. A lady killer.

This was Jasper last winter when he was 14. He died in July. I buried him just up the hill from where this pic was taken.

What a beautiful boy! Each dog has a season when they're perfectly camouflaged.

At age 15 Puck has his very first hot spot. Bitter Apple spray failed to stop his chewing. Now we're going to give him a bath with special hot spot shampoo. OH NO!!!! FEAR AND TREMBLING!!!!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:34 (seventeen years ago) link

MOANS OF ANGUISH!!!!

Now he is beautiful, and our entire house is drenched. It's amazing how much water they can hold in their paws. I could have dried them more thoroughly, but he wanted to get out of the bathroom so badly, and the house did need mopping.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 12:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Jesus, I thought someone died. Luckily not. How's his hot spot? Er, what's his hot spot?

Sorry to hear it.

this thread is making me think that I should get on the property ladder and become a serial old dog rescuer.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 20:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Aww, he was a sweet looking old guy!

Now Puck has run away. Mad at us.

Hot spots are itchy spots, typically on the haunches, that the dog can't stop chewing. They chew all the fur off, chew it raw. Sometimes a flea allergy starts it, sometimes it's OCD and they give them Prozac!
German shepherds are very prone to it, and Puck seems to be a shepherd/beagle kind of mutt.
Dobermans are prone to a related syndrome called "flank-sucking."

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 23:57 (seventeen years ago) link

He'll be back. He's not going to jump on the ferry or something. My beagle used to cross into Canada a lot. Made for all kinds of interesting conversations with the border patrol. I saw a yellow lab recently that had what you're describing. I had a chance to take him off of the owner's hands. Might still do just that. He was so freakin laid back. (the dog, that is) But I didn't know what I'd be getting into in veterinary terms.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm totally in love with the icelandic sheepdog at the feed store, and asked his owners to keep me in mind if they ever got tired of him.

Puck is back, as you said.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:24 (seventeen years ago) link

See? There's a dog that I see once every week when I make my rounds to the natural food stores. A rescued greyhound that is just too adorable. I've made a similar statement of intent to the owner, but nothing doing.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 3 August 2006 00:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I know. These people at the feed store won't give me their dog, either. I think this is where they got him—I'm sure all the pups in this last litter are spoken for, but I'm calling them anyway.

A day for old dogs to be thankful for their favorite quilts.
Puck has Erlichiosis (yet another disease spread by ticks) and has just started on a month-long course of Doxycycline.

How's your old girl doing, Rock Hardy?
Puck fell down the stairs last night and tore his dewclaw. Lots of blood. We were TOTALLY freaked out (it was 11:00—too late to call the vet!) until I googled dewclaw injury and found out how common it is. It's not bleeding any more. He licked it for hours. He's a bit depressed-seeming. He gets shaken up by this stuff,. Plus he must be sore. We're kicking ourselves for our carelessness. We had been barricading the bedroom door at night (can't close it or the pellet-stove heat won't get in), but what we really should have done as well is barricade the bottom of the stairs, too. Climbing up is harder—all of his bad falls have been going up. So now the stairs are secured, and we escort him when he wants to go up or down.
OUR POOR BABY!!!!
Here he is, sleeping it off. Prior to the horrid event we had a two-hour beach walk, so life is not all sorrow.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 26 January 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago) link

It's back to baby gates for you, Beth. Good old Puck for keeping on keeping on, though. I do envy how dogs get to go to sleep after their two hour walk, instead of having to do eight hours of work.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 26 January 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Poor Puck, I hope he feels better soon.

Tracy's doing really well! She's even holding her pee at night better. (Of course I just jinxed that.) We got her a longer lead line for the back yard, so she can follow the sunny spots well into the afternoon and laze all day. Her coat's thickened up for the winter and today, with sunny skies and no wind, she has no interest in coming in and getting near a heater. (It was 26 degrees when I took her out, 46 now).

She's a tough old gal!
Puck's much livelier. If there was ever a day to go on the DL it's this one—it was 8 degrees when I woke up this morning. He has no problem with lounging in front of the pellet stove.

i made mister estela come into my study to admire puck and tracy, which he did, greatly, we beamed at each other about dogs and then harry got a treat on their behalfs.

estela (estela), Friday, 26 January 2007 23:12 (seventeen years ago) link

It's easy!

img src=the•URL•of•the•image

with html brackets () on either side. The image has to exist somewhere on the web, so start a free photobucket account. Practice on this thread!

That's good, Ophelia, but you want to hang your head a bit lower so you can trip over your own ears. Like me.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e391/marthasminions/puckinthebathroom.jpg

Since we put the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, the bathroom is Puck's favorite place.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago) link

And this despite the fact that he had a nice cushy bed in front of the pellet stove. We finally took it away because we kept tripping over it, and he never used it.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Whew. Every time I see this thread on the new answers page, well...

Good to see Puck reprazentin' still.

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

To brush your teeth at the sink you have to stand with one foot on either side of him. If he's sleeping he won't even wake up, and even if he's awake, half the time he won't even move. He just waits for you to finish up and get out of his room.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Beth - how old is Puck?

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c287/expatrica/M_Ms.jpg

The one on the right in this pic is my parents' dog Molly*. I was there the day the got her and love her so much. Best and sweetest dog ever. She's 12 and although she has some trouble with her joints, she's hanging in there! Old dogs are definitely a classic.

*The other pup in the pic is Maggie who is much bigger now as the pic is a year old. She's a total monster but so ridiculously cute.

ENBB, Monday, 26 February 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh! Molly is so sweet! What a gentle gaze. I'm sure she keeps young Maggie in line. I love it when older dogs crabbily reprimand puppies. Teaches them respect! Pugs can live a long, long time. I've got trouble with MY joints, and I'm not going anywhere!
Puck is 16.

Beth Parker, Monday, 26 February 2007 23:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Gentle is the perfect way to describe Molly. You're right too, she does keep Maggie in line - it's adorable! I think she honestly believes she's her puppy.
I love the pic of Puck on the dunes; It's great.
