Its only a matter of time before there is one with a branch of Card Factory, a fully grey sky, and a road sign that says Bosom-on-Trent 4 miles and it will be in Wenzhou

There will be a perfect replica of The Britannia stadium and a Pulis lookalike on the street outside a hologram of Greggs. It will then turn out that Tony is the manager of Shenzhen Town

A much easier one, I think:

Sfax, Tunisia. Was working my way along North African coast and that building came up on the first page of a gis of Sfax. It's a fish market

Lol I was thinking the estuary and skyline looked like Liverpool, the Mersey and the Wirral from Everton valley if you squint hard enough

I was looking at the river (bay?) and what appears to be a big inlet or tributary - maybe even a massive canal going through the middle of town and I started thinking about one of the ports along the Rhine but I think the Rhine is probably too narrow. Hamburg?
As usual I feel I'd have a better chance if I could see some church towers.
― Tim, Monday, 15 March 2021 13:43 (three years ago) link
it looks Nordic and/or Baltic to me, but I don't think the layout is that of Hamburg. Helsinki perhaps?

First instinct is Europe, maybe France? Looking for a French city with an estuary, Le Havre seems like it could fit, similar architecture. Can't find that spot yet tho

it's not Montreal, and I don't think there's another option for a place as dense as that
something about the architecture / roofs looks not North American to me

Is it Dnipro, Ukraine? I can't find the exact view from that angle, but some bridges and buildings look very suggestive of being in the right place.
― o. nate, Tuesday, 16 March 2021 20:44 (three years ago) link
i've tried the mid-atlantic seaboard in the u.s. and some baltic cities. can't find anything that looks that bright / new lol. feel like it's gotta be a somewhat major shipping port (river adjacent to large body of water?) with those bridges.
xp!

xp, but ima post anyway. Not anywhere in the US, I don't see a single billboard or any large advertisement sign, which would be very unusual in that much city.

Much of it was built up after the fall, unlike some other cities, but also worth mentioning that like Cracow in Poland, a certain amount of the pre-war city remained because it was occupied by the Nazis relatively briefly...and they also thought it was very beautiful. So much of Cracow's centrum remains relatively intact. It's odd.

Ha amazing. I was sure I could see the Matagarup bridge and then there was another bridge in about the right place and on the map there was a stadium in about the right location... which I didn’t check, looks nothing like the one in the pic. Good Dnipro-finding.
― Tim, Tuesday, 16 March 2021 21:58 (three years ago) link
The bridge in the foreground doesn't appear to have clearance for freighters, but definitely can accommodate river barges.
― Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 16 March 2021 22:13 (three years ago) link
There didn't seem to be enough cities on rivers in Canada, so I thought to try Russia and Eastern Europe. Started with Kiev moved south. Luckily found Dnipro pretty quick.
