Another perspective

Still very much in Belgium (orange back on traffic signs too), but what is THAT thing? hmmmm
― StanM, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:11 (two years ago) link
oh, is it a train station?
― StanM, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:14 (two years ago) link
Looks hilly, so if it is Belgium then is it Liege?
― Neil S, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:17 (two years ago) link
yeah, more wallonia than flanders
― StanM, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:18 (two years ago) link
OK definitely not UK. Could be Belgium but could also be France up near the Belgian border like Lille or something - balcony and blinds look a bit French.
― Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:21 (two years ago) link
North of France: don't think the traffic signs have orange back sides there

I think it's Lille
― A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 6 August 2021 12:49 (two years ago) link
No, those are belgian plates (white background with red letters/numbers and the blue B to the left + street sign with blue background and white letters) - I'm still 100% thinking Belgium but that raised train stop with the weird roof... NO idea. Damn!
― StanM, Friday, 6 August 2021 12:54 (two years ago) link
... but maybe it IS Lille though - they don't call that part of France "French Flanders" for nothing :D
― StanM, Friday, 6 August 2021 12:56 (two years ago) link
I am looking at streets in Lille and they look just like this, cannot find any of these locations though, and is that an actual station?
― A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 6 August 2021 12:58 (two years ago) link
tram?
― StanM, Friday, 6 August 2021 13:18 (two years ago) link
The thing that stands out to me is the lack of any markings on the street. Seems odd.
― o. nate, Friday, 6 August 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link
Something about the way the sky and the clouds look makes me think this is near the seacoast
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 6 August 2021 14:56 (two years ago) link
Based on my Google Streetview trawling, it seems the lack of painted street marks is more typical of Belgian than French cities, but I could be wrong.

― cherry blossom, Saturday, 7 August 2021 11:01 (two years ago) link
... I still don't know. Is this raised & covered train/tram stop the only landmark in the neighborhood?
― StanM, Saturday, 7 August 2021 11:10 (two years ago) link
Yeah there doesn't appear to be an awful lot to differentiate these 4 views in terms of clues
― ignore the blue line (or something), Saturday, 7 August 2021 13:37 (two years ago) link
Is that a + sign on the white sign?
― kinder, Saturday, 7 August 2021 13:44 (two years ago) link
- I'm guessing it's a T and the last letter of the name of the stop?
- This community still has alternate-side parking (blue sign on the third picture with a red circle and 1 \ 15 (no parking on this side of the road from the 1st to the 15th of the Month) )so... that third picture was taken in the second half of a Month and this last one (cars parked on the other side) in the first half - however, this doesn't help as there's no list of places in Belgium that have this type of parking (that I know of)
- Is there a street name sign on that house in the middle of the last picture?
- those three houses are awfully small - are they 19th century original workers' terraces, maybe near a coal mine? (but then other ex-industrial locations like Charlerloi also had terraces I guess)
- are those parking spots just behind the corner in the last picture? (also doesn't mean anything, you can park your car there and then go into that dark entry to the stairs and up to the train/tram stop)
- stumped

good one! I had checked all the stations in Charleroi except this one - the rails aren't on the map anymore :(

I love that the street name is Rue Grand Central. And at least in the process I learned how unlow Wallonia can be (was looking at elevated railway sections in nearby Namur not Charleroi).
― nashwan, Sunday, 8 August 2021 10:06 (two years ago) link
thank you, cherry blossom - that was a great search, even though I had no actual idea for most of it.
― StanM, Sunday, 8 August 2021 13:14 (two years ago) link
I spent a lot of time in Charleroi, Namur, and surrounding cities, but didn't ever find that tram stop. I guess it didn't show up when I enabled transit overlay in Google Maps, since its decommissioned.

It's not a council building but 'brutalist council building uk' image search brought up a story about the council debating whether to demolish it:

looks like my very limited experiences of Malaysia over 20 years ago, so I'm going to say... Penang
― Neil S, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 15:26 (two years ago) link
the mural and surface parking vibe makes that looks a lot like broadway in chinatown in los angeles ...
but the air conditioners are wrong for north america, and so is the dinky little truck and the licence plates, and i can't find the spot in LA on streetview. so yeah i think this is asia.
― ๐ ๐๐ข๐จ (caek), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 18:54 (two years ago) link
those A/C units look like Singapore but rest of picture looks too downscale.
― that's not my post, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 19:17 (two years ago) link
I was thinking LA's Chinatown too, maybe Bernard St (that leads to the northbound 110 fwy), but the license plate on the silver car looks like the wide, skinny ones that they do in Europe. I'm wondering if it's a European Chinatown.
― nickn, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 19:47 (two years ago) link
right? it looks chinoise rather than chinese.

Looks like something you might see in a Southeast Asian country. I think Penang was a good guess. Reminds me of city street scenes I've seen in Indonesia.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link
My first thought was Malaysia or Indonesia but I did wonder about it being a Chinatown outside of Asia but I got more of an air of South America rather than Europe if so
