Still looks kinda like Indonesia to me, except for the absence of people and traffic.

Hard to tell, but the writing on the white building looks like it might be Arabic. And yet the grey skies, puddles of water and green grass of the second picture hardly screams Middle East. And the writing in the first pic looks like it's Chinese. Colour me confused.

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:18 (three years ago) link

The white pointed arches look pretty distinctive - Islamic influence?

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:26 (three years ago) link

it's one of the 800 gigantic cities in indonesia i think, a lot of muslim / arabic crossover in that part of the world.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 13 August 2021 00:27 (three years ago) link

And plenty of Chinatowns in Indonesia too I'm guessing

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:28 (three years ago) link

xp
Isn't Indonesia largely Muslim? They would likely have buildings with Arabic writing.

nickn, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:29 (three years ago) link

it could be brunei for instance. it's definitely somewhere wet.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 13 August 2021 00:30 (three years ago) link

The white building looks like it could be a mosque, and the first picture posted could be a Buddhist temple. Both would be common in Indonesian or Malaysian cities.

Is that one of those Japanese mini Kei trucks? So we have Chinese lampions, Arabic type windows, palm trees, and now a harbour that looks like it recently flooded - it's going to be some island in the middle of everything, isn't it? Like... Okinawa?

StanM, Saturday, 14 August 2021 08:58 (three years ago) link

I am surprised at how tricky this one has turned out to be, thought picture #4 would be it. Tempted to give a clue at this stage, or at least list a few countries it isn't.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 14 August 2021 11:51 (three years ago) link

No to clues, and no to non-image information I think. I think a #5 would be better.

thought picture #4 would be it.

Personally I thought I'd get more from 1 and 2 than from 4, not that I got much of anything though

Two Harbors, Minnesota

Bo Burzum (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 14 August 2021 14:06 (three years ago) link

It is not Two Harbors, Minnesota

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 14 August 2021 16:17 (three years ago) link

what are we supposed to see in #4 that would give it away?

StanM, Saturday, 14 August 2021 20:55 (three years ago) link

Combination of port and factory should be pretty distinctive. or so I thought.

Anyway, #5 as requested

maybe everyone's tired of looking up cities

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Saturday, 14 August 2021 22:49 (three years ago) link

yeah could be

sorry, don't mean to be a debbie downer.

it's 1 am here, sorry :-)

StanM, Saturday, 14 August 2021 23:22 (three years ago) link

OK, that's not what I was expecting. I no longer think its Indonesia or Malaysia. Looks too dry.

o. nate, Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:25 (three years ago) link

#1 clearly looks Chinese (Chinese characters in red above gate, lion statues) and some people thought that was misdirection and it was a Chinatown but that city is really big and now I'm back to thinking it's a port city in China -- the problem is, places in China with Islamic influence aren't really on the seacoast right?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:39 (three years ago) link

Ok, this shot looks more promising!

cherry blossom, Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:49 (three years ago) link

I agree we're no longer looking at Malaysia or Indonesia, but I don't think this is China. This feels more like Africa

cherry blossom, Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:52 (three years ago) link

Yay! well done!

StanM, Sunday, 15 August 2021 03:13 (three years ago) link

well done cherry blossom!

I started looking at Port Louis via this list - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatowns_in_Africa

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 15 August 2021 08:23 (three years ago) link

blimey, well done!

kinder, Sunday, 15 August 2021 08:51 (three years ago) link

Well it did take 5 photos to get there, and I was nowhere near on the first four. The last shot made me think Africa, and Mauritius the closest part of Africa to Indonesia

Pretty small city so the Chinatown easy to find and the pink/yellow thing popped up after a minute or so going down the main street

The second pic took longer, but I was curious what on earth it was. Didn't look for the others

cherry blossom, Sunday, 15 August 2021 09:02 (three years ago) link

I had an inkling, early on, that this might by a Chinatown in Africa, but have been too busy this week to spend much time on my hunches

heyy nineteen, that's john belushi (the table is the table), Sunday, 15 August 2021 10:26 (three years ago) link

Nice job, cherry blossom! I thought Africa too after seeing that last photo, but had no idea where in Africa it could be, and never even remembered the existence of Mauritius. It's interesting how Asian that city looks, in terms of type of construction, vehicles, etc., at least to my eyes.

could def be California, though I also get a New Orleans/ Savannah feeling from the look of that highway

rob, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:15 (three years ago) link

guided path, wheelchair accessible - botanical garden/arboretum sorta thing?

StanM, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:30 (three years ago) link

looks like a college campus to me. possibly a fairly old one (by US standards) given that brick wall. maybe pre-war.

background looks coastal? maybe even a port?

the planting looks too green for los angeles and i can't think of anywhere that nice close to a freeway in LA (mayybe USC, but that brick wall is too old for USC).

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:35 (three years ago) link

I get a convalescent home vibe, woman on left has a nametag, the two guys in the distance have identical shirt/pants color as that woman.

nickn, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:39 (three years ago) link

I wonder if they're visiting though. It would seem kind of odd for a staff person to be taking a photo of her own workplace...?

rob, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:43 (three years ago) link

the two guys are a google image stitching clone of the same guy

StanM, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:44 (three years ago) link

yes though there is a third, more distant guy who might be wearing the same shirt/pants colors

rob, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:45 (three years ago) link

ghost! disembodied head between photographer's arms

StanM, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:47 (three years ago) link

xp
I'm thinking maybe she's taking pictures to send to the older woman's family.

Art gallery also occurred to me, as there is a modern sculpture to the left of the woman in shorts.

nickn, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 18:53 (three years ago) link

Yeah plus the woman in the wheelchair is possibly holding some kind of brochure or map

on closer look, that "third guy" is not a human, could be a sculpture or I could be hallucinating

rob, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 19:10 (three years ago) link

I was assuming they were taking a picture of the sunrise/sunset??? Or an airplane?

a (waterface), Tuesday, 17 August 2021 19:14 (three years ago) link

yeah those are all possible, or it could be the tree that's in the image we already have

rob, Tuesday, 17 August 2021 19:31 (three years ago) link

am I crazy for thinking that glassy building in the background is the John Hancock in Boston? I know all skyscrapers look like that lol
