there's a culture center called Korpus in Minsk but I don't think there's a skating rink nearby - maybe they do winter activities near water sometimes?

― StanM, Tuesday, 24 August 2021 17:56 (two years ago) link
Correct! It is, of course, the Korpus Culture Center in Minsk
The first picture looks like it might be inside a travel agency, so maybe the Maxx Royal plaque is indicating they have organized trips to that hotel.
Also correct, its the Turberi travel agency, across the road from the Culture Center

Eastern European looking dudes with palm trees? This one's hard. Is it an album cover from a Gorbachev-era New Wave band?

Argentina has lots of mountains. The street view could plausibly be Mendoza but I don’t recognise it.

I don't know either but you get way cooler images if you search on yandex for "abandoned pier south america" than on google.

― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 31 August 2021 00:51 (two years ago) link
Fading resort town with palm trees, but guys in first photo look more East European than Mediterranean, and guys in last photo are well wrapped up as if it's pretty cold. Was initially thinking Argentina, but the buildings don't look that South American. Maybe somewhere on the Black Sea? Sochi or somewhere like that? Don't think it's a docked cruise ship btw, I think it's a building.
― Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 01:51 (two years ago) link
Hmm: "While it is well known to many that lots of palms grow in Sochi, Russia, it is not the only place in the country where palms are found."

Black Sea feels good as a guess - buildings shaped like ships on concrete piers are certainly a thing there: for instance https://www.google.be/maps/@42.9962529,41.0214901,3a,75y,356.33h,89.14t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipMv4dL-ZVQX7xicMc03OWV1PnHhdr53JIIS5cso!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipMv4dL-ZVQX7xicMc03OWV1PnHhdr53JIIS5cso%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya129.18877-ro-0-fo100!7i8192!8i4096

Reading about Sukhumi, apparently the destination for Soviet leaders dachas, now capital of Abkhazia, how much more "abandoned Eastern block resort" can you get than that? Nice choice.
